Whether such values will allow one to prosper in the complex world of early Victorian England is, however, the major question posed by Great Expectations, one of Dicken's most fascinating, and disturbing, novels. Londonban az osztálya által elkövetett bűnök elől menekülő, azokat megtagadó fiatal francia arisztokrata, Charles Darnay és a züllött életmódot folytató angol ügyvéd, Sydney Carton ugyanabba a fiatal nőbe szeret bele. Darnaynak akarata ellenére vissza kell térnie Párizsba, és szembe kell néznie a Terror anarchiájával. Carton sorsa végzetesen összefonódik riválisáéval, s a végső próbát neki is Párizsban kell kiállnia.
