Oliver Twist a dologházban születik. Anyja belehal a szülésbe, a kisfiú tehát az egyházközség gondoskodására szorul. Rá és a hozzá hasonló szerencsétlenekre nem szívesen pazarolnak pénzt, majdhogynem éheztetik őket - társai ezért egyszer sorsot húznak, és Olivernek kell a hitvány vacsora után kiállnia, és azt mondani: "Kérek még." Hallatlan arcátlanság ez, és az egyházközségi elöljárók meg vannak győződve róla, hogy Oliver akasztófán fogja végezni.
