Az 1789-es forradalmat közvetlenül megelőző idők Franciaországára utal. A nevezett két város pedig Párizs és London. A két városon kívül szerepet kap két férfi is, akikre lesújtanak a francia forradalom rettenetes eseményei. Londonban az osztálya által elkövetett bűnök elől menekülő, azokat megtagadó fiatal francia arisztokrata, Charles Darnay és a züllött életmódot folytató angol ügyvéd, Sydney Carton ugyanabba a fiatal nőbe szeret bele. Darnaynak akarata ellenére vissza kell térnie Párizsba, és szembe kell néznie a terror anarchiájával. Carton sorsa végzetesen összefonódik riválisáéval, így a végső próbát neki is Párizsban kell kiállnia.
A szerző által „legjobb történetének” nevezett regény erőteljes, eleven portréja a változásnak, a felfordulásnak, amely nemcsak a történelem menetét, hanem az egyének életét is alapjaiban változtatja meg.

Staré dejiny Anglicka pre deti od Charlesa Dickensa je jediná kniha, ktorú autor napísal špeciálne pre deti, a súčasne jeho jediná historická práca. Pri predstavení anglických dejín dorastajúcemu pokoleniu autor dovolil svojmu rozprávačskému talentu, aby sa jasnejšie prejavil. Z knihy sa vďaka tomu nestala zdĺhavá recyklácia historických faktov, ale prevráva cez ňu autor Olivera Twista a Ponurého domu. Titulními dvěma městy, v nichž se příběh odehrává, jsou Paříž a Londýn, přičemž anglický klasik líčí Paříž jako centrum nelidskosti a zvráceného běsnění, zatímco Londýn, i přes své stinné stránky, pro něj zůstává městem rozumu a přetrvávající naděje na normální život.
