Danach verbrachte er fünf Jahre in Paris. 1961 schied er nach schwerer Krankheit freiwillig aus dem Leben.

Er lebte jung verheiratet in Paris, schrieb in Cafés, lieh sich Bücher bei Shakespeare & Company. Er war mit F. Scott Fitzgerald und Ezra Pound befreundet, sprach mit Gertrude Stein über Bücher, sah James Joyce beim Essen zu, trank Cognac mit Ford Maddox Ford. Das Geld war knapp, doch bescheidene Gewinne beim Pferderennen wurden in Champagner umgesetzt, hieß es doch zu leben wie Gott in Frankreich.
