Rudyard Kipling sa narodil v indickej Bombaji ako syn maliara pracujúceho pre britskú koloniálnu správu, detstvo prežil v Indii, kam se po absolvovaní internátnej školy v Anglicku roku 1881 opäť vrátil, protože vojenská kariéra mu bola uzavrená pre silnú krátkozrakost a štúdium na univerzite bolo príliš nákladné. Stal sa pomocníkom šéfredaktora anglických novín v Lahore, kde mu vydali prvé verše a krátke poviedky. Napriek tomu, že v Indii strávil len sedem rokov, načerpal tu námety pre svoju najlepšiu tvorbu.

V osmdesiatych rokoch 19. storočia sa definitívne presadil ako básnik a neskôr aj ako prozaik. Podnikol cesty do Číny, Japonska a Spojených štátov. Po sobáši s Američankou Caroline Balestierovou roku 1892 žil štyri roky vo Vermonte v USA, kde napísal svoje slávne Knihy džunglí.

V Londýne, kam sa s manželkou roku 1896 presťahoval, vydal svoje ďalšie romány, ale stále písal i poéziu. Vo vlasti bol cenený predovšetkým ako básnik ospevujúci mužnost a vlastenectvo, jeho próza tak vyzdvihovaná nebola. Čitateľov zaujal predevšetkým cudzokrajnou tématikou, popisom prírody a zvykov domorodcov a pozoruhodným umeleckým jazykom. Prelom storočí potom znamenal vrchol jeho literárnych úspechov a roku 1907 mu bola udelená Nobelova cena za literatúru„… s ohľadom na pozorovací talent, originálnu predstavivosť ako i mužnú silu ideí a umenie kresby“ (citácia z odôvodnenia Švédskej akadémie).

Napriek tomu, že Kipling písal až do začiatku tridsiatych rokov, nedosiahol už predchádzajúcich úspechov. Naviac ťažko niesol smrť svojho syna Johna na bojisku 1. svetovej vojny. Po spisovateľovej smrti na mozgovú mŕtvicu vyšla ešte jeho autobiografia Something of Myself (1937).

Kipling ukazuje britské impérium ešte v plnej sile a veľkosti a ako presvedčený vlastenec a humanista zobrazuje Britov vo vzťahu k Indom ako veľkých bielych bratov s povinnosťou viesť ich a učiť, ako to popísal vo svojej problematickej básni Bremeno bieleho človeka (1899, The White Man’s Burden). Neskôr bol preto často označovaný za imperialistu a horlivého zastanca kolonializmu, ale nikto mu nemohol uprieť talent veľkého rozprávača. Preslávená je tiež jeho báseň If z roku 1895, známa v českom prebásnení Otokara Fischera pod názvom Když..., v kterej Kipling vystihol obraz a ideál mužných vlastností a požiadavky na statočného človeka v životnom zápase v premáhaní každodenných všeľudských problémov.
