Orhan Pamuk's Museum of Innocence in Istanbul is the culmination of decades of omnivorous collecting that seeks to capture the city of Pamuk's youth through everyday objects: The ephemera, bric-a-brac, and clutter that adheres to every life. These particular objects are intimately tied to The Museum of Innocence, Pamuk's novel of lost love, which lends its narrative structure to their arrangement in the museum. Eighty beautifully designed vitrines, or boxes, carry the visitor along the arc of the story, on a journey through time and space as well as into the mind of the collector himself, ambiguously identified with both Pamuk and his novel's lovelorn narrator. The Innocence of Objects, Pamuk's catalogue of his museum, explores the many meanings of this remarkable project. While it offers a rich visual guide to the exhibitions, it also allows Pamuk to write about things that matter deeply to him, including the psychology of the collector, the proper role of the museum, the uses of photography in modernising societies (illustrated with Pamuk's superb collection of haunting photographs and movie stills of old Istanbul) and of course the customs and traditions of his beloved Istanbul. The book's imagery is equally evocative, ranging from the pop ephemera that has become "collectible" throughout the chronically nostalgic developed world to the superb photographs of Turkish photographer Ara Guler. Combining compelling art and writing, The Innocence of Objects is an original work that will appeal to readers with a wide range of interests.

Orhan Pamuk is one of Turkey's premier novelists and My Name Is Red, when published in the original Turkish in 1998, became the fastest-selling book in Turkish history. It is high time then that a translation to English was made, and this publication will be widely welcomed by Pamuk's growing legion of English-speaking admirers. In the late 16th century, during the final years of the reign of Ottoman Sultan Murat III, a great work is commissioned, a book celebrating the Sultan's life. The work is conducted in secret, to the ignorance of the artists involved, for fear of a violent religious reaction to the European style of the illuminations in the book. An artist goes, missing, feared dead, and Black, a painter who has been in a self-enforced exile because of spurned love, returns to help his former Master investigate the disappearance. Pamuk's prose is as exquisite and rich as the elucidations it describes. This is a dense, atmospherically fevered book, which demands a high level of patience and attention from the reader, perhaps mirroring the patience of the miniaturists. Written in the first person, with multiple narratives, this is a book full of unreliable witnesses, and as the various stories of the narrators unfold, the truth of the disappearance slowly emerges. Historicko-filozofický román Orhana Pamuka se odehrává v barvitém světě osmanského Istanbulu za vlády sultána Mehmeda IV. na konci 17. století a vypráví alegorický příběh o zvláštním vztahu benátského zajatce a jeho pána, istanbulského hodži, kteří jsou si k nerozeznání podobní. Vedle neotřelého zachycení života v mnohonárodnostní osmanské metropoli se román zamýšlí nad hranicemi poznání cizí kultury, vztahem mezi Evropou a Tureckem a stabilitou lidské identity. Pamukův román se stal v Turecku senzací a zahájil vlnu tzv. nového historického románu.

Jednoho zimního večera roku 1591 je v Istanbulu zavražděn přední iluminátor rukopisů a nyní k nám promlouvá ze studny, kam vrah hodil jeho tělo. Jeho hlas se ale ztrácí v koncertu ostatních hlasů, mezi nimiž figurují mistři sultánovy malířské dílny, knihař Kara a jeho milenka Şeküre, dohazovačka Ester, Strýc Efendi i mince, červená barva, smrt, pes nebo třeba strom. Každý z nich předkládá svůj pohled na svět a snaží se nás přesvědčit o své pravdě a je jen na čtenáři, jaký obrázek si z tohoto napínavého příběhu poskládá. Román je vrcholným dílem tohoto tureckého nositele Nobelovy ceny za literaturu (2006).

Vypravěčem tohoto monumentálního postmoderního příběhu o hledání smyslu života, velké lásky a smrti je mladý student, jenž se vydává na mysteriózní cestu napříč Anatólií a snaží se nalézt nový život, který mu přislíbila záhadná kniha. Naráží na řadu znamení, která zdánlivě vedou k vysněnému cíli, a stále hlouběji se noří do vzpomínek na své dětství.

Set in Istanbul between 1975 and today, The Museum of Innocence tells the story of Kemal, the son of one of Istanbul's richest families, and of his obsessive love for a poor and distant relation, the beautiful Fusun, who is a shop-girl in a small boutique. The novel depicts a panoramic view of life in Istanbul as it chronicles this long, obsessive, love affair between Kemal and Fusun; and Pamuk beautifully captures the identity crisis experienced by Istanbul's upper classes who find themselves caught between traditional and westernised ways of being. For the past ten years, Pamuk has been setting up a museum in the house in which his hero's fictional family lived, to display Kemal's strange collection of objects associated with Fusun and their relationship. The museum will be called The Museum of Innocence and it opens in 2010.
