Robert Louis Stevenson, autor známych diel Ostrov pokladov či Podivný prípad doktora Jekylla a pána Hyda, bol väčšinu svojho života vášnivým cestovateľom. Ani jeho podlomené zdravie ho nemohlo odradiť od tejto záľuby, naopak ho prinútilo zmeniť prostredie a navštíviť miesta ako Francúzska Riviéra alebo Tichý oceán, keď dúfal, že sa vylieči z tuberkulózy. Na lodi precestoval celú Európu a nespočetné množstvo ostrovov, pričom jeho výpravy neraz trvali aj niekoľko mesiacov. Príhody a zápisky z ciest mu boli inšpiráciou pri tvorbe diel ako Putovanie s oslom do hôr (1879) a Do Južných morí (1896). Stevenson a jeho rodina si v San Francisku v roku 1888 prenajali loď – škuner Casco a vydali sa na výpravu Tichým oceánom. Zdravý morský vzduch bol odporúčaný na zlepšenie zdravotného stavu a zároveň to bola jedinečná príležitosť precestovať túto časť sveta. Stevenson strávil určitý čas na ostrovoch Hawai, kde sa spriatelil s tamojším kráľom, aby následne vyrazil smerom na ostrovy Tahiti, Nový Zéland a súostrovie Samoa. Oboplával Austráliu navštívil aj tak vzdialené ostrovy, akými sú Kiribati alebo Apemama. Počas svojej cesty pokračoval vo svojej tvorbe a pracoval na svojom diele s názvom Diabol vo fľaši (1891), ktoré bolo jedným z najúspešnejších príbehov z prostredia kaštieľa na ostrovoch Hawai, kolónie lepry na ostrove Molokai a ďalších miest ktoré na svojej ceste navštívil. V knihe Do Južných morí autor opísal svoje zážitky z plavby po Tichom oceáne, stretnutia s miestnymi obyvateľmi, tradície a zvyky, s ktorými prišiel do kontaktu a príbehy, ktoré si vypočul. Toto prostredie mu učarovalo natoľko, že sa tu rozhodol stráviť zvyšok svôjho života a usadil sa vo vile na ostrove Samoa. Stal sa tak verejne známou osobnosťou a získal si dôveru miestnych autorít. Svoje posledné chvíle strávil na tomto ostrove a pochovaný bol v roku 1894 v oblasti Mount Vaea, kde sa nachádza aj jeho pomník. Na dielo Do Južných morí nadväzuje ďalšie s názvom Plavba na parníku Janet Nichol Južnými moriami ( 1914 ).
