Kniha Dobrodružství Toma Sawyera je nejvýznamnějším dílem amerického spisovatele Marka Twaina, který na jejích stránkách stvořil postavu uličnického Toma. Tom žije se svou tetou Polly, jež je odhodlaná vychovat z něj hodného chlapce, ale Tom má svou vlastní hlavu a také kamaráda jménem Huck, se kterým podnikají nejrůznější vylomeniny. Jedna z nich nicméně špatně dopadne a chlapci jsou znenadání vystaveni skutečnému nebezpečí. Mark Twain zobrazuje život v Americe v dobách svého vlastního dětství. Kniha posílila pozici dobrodružných románů v kontextu světové literatury.

Příběh Huckleberryho Finna navazuje dějově na prózu Dobrodružství Toma Sawyera, jde však o román mnohem vyzrálejší a významnější (řadí se mezi tzv. „velké americké romány“). Tulák Huck Finn, žijící u vdovy Douglasové, získá na konci knihy o Tomu Sawyerovi množství peněz. Do městečka se však vrací jeho věčně opilý otec, který nakonec odtáhne Hucka s sebou do divočiny. Tam ale Huck zinscenuje svou smrt a uprchne otci po řece Mississippi pryč. Cestou se k němu přidá ještě uprchlý otrok Jim a začíná se tak pouť po jižanských státech, plná spletitých příběhů, nebezpečí a vzrušujících příhod. Živé a strhující vyprávění zobrazuje i komplikované vztahy tehdejší společnosti k otázce otroctví. Prózy od počátku provokovaly také svým jazykem: neučesaným, hovorovým a živelným tak, jako je sama hlavní postava knihy.

To se společně s kamarády stane svědkem zločinu na místním hřbitově a dostanou strach jej ohlásit, neboť mají ze zločince, nechvalně známého Joea Indiána, strach. Pak se ale koná soud a za vraždu na hřbitově má být souzen nevinný člověk. Tom se rozhodne svědčit u soudu a říct popravdě, jak to celé bylo... Divoká dobrodružství Toma, Hucka i Tomovy dětské lásky Becky Thatcherové jsou známé i z řady filmových ztvárnění.
