Poprvé a pak pořád znovu
Když v květnu tohoto roku vyšla v Německu kniha Poprvé a pak pořád znovu, stala se okamžitě bestsellerem a její autorka rázem nejčtenější německou ženskou autorkou.
Napospas dešti i bouřkám. Ale poznala jsem i slunečné a teplé dny. A na této cestě jsem potkala vás, své přátele i nepřátele, všem tímto projevuji své uznání. Jedním za jejich lásku a za neotřesitelnou víru v přátelství a věrnost, za to, že ve mě věřili. Jiným zase za jejich tvrdost, odvahu, nenávist. Za bolest, již dokázali způsobit mně i jiným se záviděníhodnou lehkostí a povrchností. Tahle knížka je o násilí a sexu. O manželství a samotě. O prostituci a mateřství. Žila jsem svůj život z celého srdce, neuvěřitelně intenzivně. A stejně tak jsem to napsala. Je to kniha o sexu, ale ten není její červenou nití. Mluví o prostituci, a přesto to není reportáž. Je o životě, ale není míněna jako návod. Je to kniha o mně, ale to není nejdůležitější. Jde o víc, někdy dokonce i o všechno, nebo nic. Jde o lidství a toleranci. Jde o víru a odpuštění. O naději a modlitbu. O prosbu a dík. Jistě to není kniha pro děti. A přesto ji chci věnovat oběma svým synům. Mám vás oba moc ráda. A věnuji knihu také tobě, protože jsi mi dal tolik síly. Z vděčnosti Joschovi.“

Vzpomínky bývalého vězně koncentračního tábora, které pokračují v tradici děl Noci Elieho Wiesela a Je-li toto člověk Prima Leviho Více než sedmdesát let po osvobození nacistických koncentračních táborů spojenci podrobně líčí Max Eisen deportace z maďarského venkova do Osvětimi-Březinky, ničivou otrockou práci v Osvětimi I, neblaze známý „pochod smrti“ v lednu 1945, bolestnou dobu po osvobození i cestu k fyzickému a psychickému uzdravení. Tibor „Max“ Eisen se narodil v Moldavě v Československu v ortodoxní židovské rodině. Měl rozsáhlou širší rodinu o šedesáti členech a žil na rodinné usedlosti s rodiči, dvěma mladšími bratry, malou sestřičkou, prarodiči z otcovy strany a strýcem a tetou. Na jaře 1944 – pět a půl roku poté, co byl jeho kraj připojen k Maďarsku a ráno po rodinném Sederu – četníci Eisena a jeho rodinu násilím odvedli z jejich domu. Byli dopraveni do tranzitního tábora v cihelně a nakonec naloženi do přeplněných dobytčích vagónů s místem určení Osvětim-Březinka. Z jeho působivých a strhujících vzpomínek, přinášejících svědectví o hrůzách Osvětimi, vyzařuje autorova lidskost a ušlechtilost.“ (Barbara J. Falková, PhD., docentka katedry obranných studií Canadian Forcess College/Royal Military College of Canada) „Poutavá, hrůzná četba, přetékající vzrušujícími detaily.“ (Canadian Jewish News)

Two Wheels Good
A panoramic revisionist portrait of the nineteenth-century invention that is transforming the twenty-first-century world.
'The real feat of this book is that it takes us on a ride-across the centuries and around the globe, through startling history and vivid first-person reporting.' - Patrick Radden Keefe, New York Times bestselling author of Empire of Pain
The bicycle is a vestige of the Victorian era, seemingly out of pace with our age of smartphones and ridesharing apps and driverless cars. Yet across the world, more people travel by bicycle than by any other form of transportation. Almost anyone can learn to ride a bike - and nearly everyone does.
In Two Wheels Good, writer and critic Jody Rosen reshapes our understanding of this ubiquitous machine, an ever-present force in humanity's life and dreamlife, and a flashpoint in culture wars for more for than two hundred years. Combining history, reportage, travelogue, and memoir, Rosen unfolds the bicycle's saga from its invention in 1817 to its present-day renaissance as a 'green machine' in a world afflicted by pandemic and climate change.
Readers meet unforgettable characters: feminist rebels who steered bikes to the barricades in the 1890s, a Bhutanese king who races mountain bikes in the Himalayas, astronauts who ride a floating bicycle in zero gravity aboard the International Space Station.
Two Wheels Good examines the bicycle's past and peers into its future, challenging myths and cliches, while uncovering cycling's connection to colonial conquest and the gentrification of cities. But the book is also a love letter: a reflection on the sensual and spiritual pleasures of bike riding and an ode to an engineering marvel - a wondrous vehicle whose passenger is also its engine.

Rome
The Passenger collects the best new writing, photography, and reportage from around the world. Its aim, to break down barriers and introduce the essence of the place. Packed with essays and investigative journalism; original photography and illustrations; charts, and unusual facts and observations, each volume offers a unique insight into a different culture, and how history has shaped the place into what it is today.
Brimming with intricate research and enduring wonder, The Passenger is a love-letter to global travel.
IN THIS VOLUME, Marco D'Eramo, Nicola Lagioia, Matteo Nucci, and Francesco Piccolo among other Italian writers tell of a city which, despite appearances, slips further down the ranking of the world's most liveable cities.
To the problems faced by all large capitals, Rome has added a list of calamities of its own: widespread corruption, the resurgence of fascist movements, rampant crime. A seemingly hopeless situation perfectly symbolised by the fact that Rome currently leads the world in the number of self-combusting public buses.
However, if we look closer, this narrative is contradicted by just as many signs that point in the opposite direction. The majority of Romans wouldn't consider "betraying" their hometown, and the many newcomers are often indistinguishable from the natives in the profound love that binds them to the city, leading to a lack of the mass emigration. Rome is a place of contradictions, yet to understand Rome and "fix" its problems, we should consider it a normal city, "not unlike Chicago or Manchester." Only, incomparably more beautiful.

This Is Your Mind On Plants
From the international bestselling author of How to Change Your Mind ('A sweeping and often thrilling chronicle of the history of psychedelics' Guardian), comes a ground-breaking exploration of our relationship with natural drugs
Of all the many things humans rely on plants for, surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate, calm, or completely alter the qualities of our mental experience. In This Is Your Mind On Plants, Michael Pollan explores three very different drugs - opium, caffeine and mescaline - and throws the fundamental strangeness of our thinking about them into sharp relief. Exploring and participating in the cultures that have grown up around these drugs, while consuming (or in the case of caffeine, trying not to consume) them, Pollan reckons with the powerful human attraction to psychoactive plants, and the equally powerful taboos.
In a unique blend of history, science, memoir and reportage, Pollan shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively. In doing so, he proves that there is much more to say about these plants than simply debating their regulation, for when we take them into our bodies and let them change our minds, we are engaging with nature in one of the most profound ways we can. This ground-breaking and singular book holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations, the operations of our minds and our entanglement with the natural world.
Imperium
Imperium is a classic of reportage and a literary masterwork by one of the great writers and witnesses of the twentieth century. It is the story of an empire: the constellation of states that was submerged under a single identity for most of the century-the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. From the entrance of Soviet troops into his hometown in Poland in 1939, to just before the Berlin Wall came down, as the USSR convulsed and died, Kapuscinski travelled thousands of miles and talked to hundreds of ordinary Soviet people about their extraordinary lives and the terror from which they were emerging.
Get the Photos Others Cant
Getting the best possible photo is not a game of chance - there are proven methods and innovative approaches that the professional photographer uses to succeed. From Freeman's decades of reportage experience, he has developed proven methods for going beyond where tourists stop, and delivering the photographs that make the cover. Get the Photos Others Can't uses five 'nodes' or guiding principles, in various combinations, to elucidate each particular method of access: Right Place, Right Time - train yourself in the art of anticipationHearts & Minds - understand the importance of people skillsImmersion - involve yourself fully in your subjectDeep Learning - research and reflect Left Field - take an unexpected direction to find a new angle.
With examples from Freeman's own archive of images, as well as from iconic photographers including Weegee, Cindy Sherman, Guy Bourdin, W. Eugene Smith and Garry Winogrand, the secrets shared in this book will let you find your own modus operandi for overcoming the obstacles between you and the shot, so you can bring home your own world-class images.

Bending Adversity - Japan and the Art of Survival
The second edition of the definitive book on how modern Japan works, now fully updated up to include the new 'Reiwa' Era and the year of the Olympics
'A superb book that, better than any other I have read, manages to get the reader inside the skin of Japanese society ... astutely observed ... a great read brimming with insights' Japan Times
Despite years of stagnation, Japan remains one of the world's largest economies and a country which exerts a remarkable cultural fascination. David Pilling's new book is an entertaining, deeply knowledgeable and surprising analysis of a group of islands which have shown great resilience, both in the face of financial distress and when confronted with the overwhelming disaster of the 2011 earthquake and resulting tsunami.
Bending Adversity is a superb work of reportage and the essential book even for those who already feel they know the country well.

Mud Sweeter than Honey
After breaking ties with Yugoslavia, the USSR and then China, Enver Hoxha believed that Albania could become a self-sufficient bastion of communism. Every day, many of its citizens were thrown into prisons and forced labour camps for daring to think independently, for rebelling against the regime or trying to escape - the consequences of their actions were often tragic and irreversible.
Mud Sweeter than Honey gives voice to those who lived in Albania at that time - from poets and teachers to shoe-makers and peasant farmers, and many others whose aspirations were brutally crushed in acts of unimaginable repression - creating a vivid, dynamic and often painful picture of this totalitarian state during the forty years of Hoxha's ruthless dictatorship.
Very little emerged from Albania during communist times. With these personal accounts, Rejmer opens a window onto a terrifying period in the country's history. Mud Sweeter than Honey is not only a gripping work of reportage, but also a necessary and unique portrait of a nation.
With an Introduction by Tony Barber
*Winner of the Polityka Passport Prize**Winner of the Koscielski Award*
Translated from the Polish by Zosia Krasodomska-Jones and Antonia Lloyd-Jones
"[An] incredibly moving collection of oral histories . . . important enough to be added to the history curriculum" Telegraph
"A moving evocation of the 'everyday terror' systematically perpetrated over 41 years of Albanian communism . . . An illuminating if harrowing insight into life in a totalitarian state." Clarissa de Waal, author of ALBANIA: PORTRAIT OF A COUNTRY IN TRANSITION
"Albania, enigmatic, mysterious Albania, was always the untold story of the Cold War, the 1989 revolutions and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Mud Sweeter Than Honey goes a very long way indeed towards putting that right" Charlie Connelly, New European

The Scandal of the Century: and Other Writings
A new collection of journalism from one of the great titans of 20th century literature
"I don't want to be remembered for One Hundred Years of Solitude or for the Nobel Prize but rather for my journalism," Gabriel Garcia Marquez said in the final years of his life. And while some of his journalistic writings have been made available over the years, this is the first volume to gather a representative selection from across the first four decades of his career--years during which he worked as a full-time, often muckraking, and controversial journalist, even as he penned the fiction that would bring him the Nobel Prize in 1982. Here are the first pieces he wrote while working for newspapers in the coastal Colombian cities of Cartagena and Barranquilla . . . his longer, more fictionlike reportage from Paris and Rome . . . his monthly columns for Spain's El Pais. And while all the work points in style, wit, depth, and passion to his fiction, these fifty pieces are, more than anything, a revelation of the writer working at the profession he believed to be "the best in the world."
'Garcia Marquez always thought of himself as a journalist first and foremost and this brilliant collection goes a long way towards justifying that belief.' Salman Rushdie
The Pandemic Century
A Financial Times Best Book of the Year
The most timely and informative history book you will read this year, tracing a century of pandemics, with a new chapter on COVID-19.
Ever since the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, scientists have dreamed of preventing catastrophic outbreaks of infectious disease. Yet, despite a century of medical progress, viral and bacterial disasters continue to take us by surprise, inciting panic and dominating news cycles. From the Spanish flu and the 1924 outbreak of pneumonic plague in Los Angeles, to the 1930 'parrot fever' pandemic and the more recent SARS, Ebola, Zika and - now - COVID-19 epidemics, the last 100 years have been marked by a succession of unanticipated pandemic alarms.
In The Pandemic Century, Mark Honigsbaum chronicles 100 years of history in 10 outbreaks. Bringing us right up-to-date with a new chapter on COVID-19, this fast-paced, critically-acclaimed book combines science history, medical sociology and thrilling front-line reportage to deliver the story of our times.
As we meet dedicated disease detectives, obstructive public health officials, and gifted scientists often blinded by their own expertise, we come face-to-face with the brilliance and medical hubris shaping both the frontier of science - and the future of humanity's survival.
