Elhordott múltjaink
Milyen embert hozott létre a szocialista társadalom? Milyen, akár pozitív, akár negatív ösztönöket épített belénk a szabadság elementáris hiánya évtizedeken keresztül?

A nővérek háza

Celestial Harmonies
A biographical novel in the grand European literary tradition that spans multiple generations and three centuries of tumultuous Central European history, as witnessed by the Esterhazys, a leading Hungarian family. The Esterhazys, one of Europe's most prominent aristocratic families, are indelibly inscribed in the history of the Hapsburg Empire. Having gone through epic conquest, tragedy, triumph and near destruction, the Esterhazy family lore is rich, poignant, entertaining and awe-inspiring. 'Celestial Harmonies' is a national epic in the form of fiction, which Esterhazy writes by reinventing the traditional form of the dynastic saga. Beginning with short sections narrated in the first person, 'Celestial Harmonies' recounts legends, inventions and episodes that form a mosaic in which chronology is abandoned and only one prominent figure exists: 'My Father'. The character of 'My Father' is a Don Juan, a profligate, a tycoon and a scholar, a bishop, an architect, a madman and a tyrant, an envoy and a premier, a student of Helmholtz and the cat in Schrodinger's experiment. He stands for each and every family member, functioning as a mount for simply everything, a man as unlimited and inexhaustible as the power born by the book's fictional family. 'Celestial Harmonies' is a rich, dazzlingly original exploration of the emotional ties that bind men to their fathers, bonds that stand outside time, place and history. Old world glamour meets harsh post-war reality in a novel that touches on all aspects of life and philosophy relevant to us today -- the nature of dictatorship, love, hate and family relationships, to meditations on betrayal, God and Christianity.
Ulysses
Thomas Mann a zárt forma, James Joyce a nyitott forma apostola. Thomas Mann a hit mitikusa, s ezért olyan komoly, James Joyce a hitetlenség mitikusa, s ezért olyan derűs." (Nádas Péter, 1978/2000)
"Ő akkor semmihez se kapcsolódva hirtelen azt mondta: "Tudod, mit szerzek, András fiam?" A magas ember fölvonta magát. "No?"

Most már igen - nyugtáztam magamban.

Miracle Of Grace
Grace's mother Eileen is a great list maker, so when Grace walks into Eileen's kitchen to drop off a postal package and sees her garish 'To Do' pad on the counter, she thinks nothing of it, until she sneaks a look. There, at No 8, ranked in importanc
e well below bread, telephone bill and bins is 'Tell G I have ovarian cancer, probably terminal'. Grace goes into shock, primarily at the thought that her mother is dying, but also at the fact that her mother simply couldn't tell her to her face. Is
their relationship really so bad? Eileen has been brought up in rural Ireland in the 1950s, in thrall to the rules of her community - church first, then husband, then children. So she's had little time for herself and even now finds it impossible to
put her own problems and desires to the fore. It is only when Grace confronts her, that she is able to go back over her past, to her own childhood, her early marriage, and the birth of her cherished only daughter to find memories of happiness and unb
earable tragedy that have coloured her life forever. "The Miracle of Grace" is a poignant, but ultimately uplifting, novel that reveals a unique relationship between a mother and her daughter, and tells of a woman whose life has been restricted by th
e mores of duty, honour, and religion but who yearns for love. O

Huszonhárom voltam, amikor a Milan elleni BL-meccsen Demetrio Albertini csúnyán rácsúszott a jobb lábamra, onnantól fogva egy egészséges bokával játszottam le a karrierem. Azóta is itt vagyok.
Amint betöltötte a tizenhatot, teljesült gyerekkori célja: édesapja nyomába lépve NB I-es futballista lett. Miután 68 első osztályú mérkőzésen viselte a PMSC szerelését, és mielőtt Berlinbe költözött volna, egy évig a BVSC-t erősítette, melynek színeiben játszott először és utoljára volt csapata ellen - noha a vasutasok 2-1-es győzelméből góllal vette ki a részét, nem szívesen gondol vissza arra a meccsre. A Herthánál eltöltött időszakra annál inkább!

Candy - it's the only the name she needs - is blazing her way through Paris, New York and Tokyo as fashion's latest international supermodel...Her sister, Tammy, has a job producing the most successful hit show on TV, and a home she loves in L.A.'s Hollywood Hills...In New York, oldest sister Sabrina is an ambitious young lawyer, while Annie is an American artist in Florence, living for her art...On one Fourth of July weekend, as they do every year, the four sisters come home to Connecticut for their family's annual gathering. But before the holiday is over, tragedy strikes and their world is utterly changed. Suddenly, four sisters who have been fervently pursuing success and their own lives - on opposite sides of the world - come together to share one New York brownstone, to support each other and their father, and to pick up the pieces while one sister struggles to heal her shattered body and soul. Thus begins an unscripted chapter of their lives, as a bustling house is soon filled with eccentric dogs, laughter, tears, friends, men...and the kind of honesty and unconditional love only sisters can provide. But as the four women settle in, each is forced to confront the direction of their respective lives. As the year passes and another July Fourth approaches, a season of grief and change gives way to new beginnings as a family comes together to savour its blessings and a future filled with unexpected gifts, surprises, and ultimately, hope. With unerring insight and compassion, Danielle Steel tells a compelling story of four sisters who love and laugh, struggle and triumph...and are irrevocably woven into the fabric of each other's lives. Brilliantly blending humour and heartbreak, she delivers a powerful message about the fragility - and the wonder - of life.

Lacná kniha Becsület és kötelesség 2. (-90%)
Sok mindent megtudunk ebből a könyvből, amelynek forrásértéke vitathatatlan. Ám a legizgalmasabb élményt benne mégis maga az emlékeit közreadó főszereplő nyújtja: rendkívüli személyisége, őszinte hangja, a lapokról sugárzó szerénység, s egyszersmind határozottság, céltudatosság okán.
Gróf Edelsheim Gyulai Ilona, a -kiskormányzóné- emlékezik tiszteletre méltó őszinteséggel, finom humorral, bölcs megértéssel több, mint ötven év örömeiről, fájdalmairól, csalódásairól, reményeiről.

Film posters of the 40s
Considering that the world was at war during the first half of the decade and much of it still in ruins during the second half, the 1940s were an extraordinary fertile period for the cinema. This was the heyday of directors such as Orson Wells (Citizen Kane, The Lady from Shanghai and The Third Man), Alfred Hitchcock (Notorious, Rope, Spellbound and Suspicion), Powell and Pressberger (Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes) and Jean Cocteau (La Belle et la Bete, Orphee), and of stars like Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman, Betty Grable, Laurence Olivier, Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum and, of course, the incomparable Bogart and Bacall. Most lists of all-time favourites will include a host of 40s movies such as Casablanca and Brief Encounter. Surprisingly, perhaps, the decade produced relatively few memorable war films, though Twelve O'Clock High and the March of Time documentary series are notable exceptions. Indeed the setting that most characteristic of the cinema of the 1940s is not the battlefield, but the dark alleys and mean streets of the noir genre, represented here by titles such as The Blue Dahlia, The Big Sleep, Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, The Postman Always Rings Twice and Gilda. Not only are these movies enduring classics, they also inspired some of the greatest poster art in the cinema's history and, as always in this series of books, it is fascinating to see how the subjects were treated by European and other poster artists as well as the American originals. In Europe, the age of postwar austerity saw the beginnings of Ealing's classic comedies with Kind Hearts and Coronets, two of Olivier's interpretations of Shakespearean tragedy, Hamlet and Macbeth, and the revival of the French and Italian film industries with movies like Les Enfants du Paradis and Rome Open City. Add to this list a pot pourri of miscellaneous titles ranging from Abbott and Costello in Hollywood to Ziegfield Follies, and you have ten years' worth of movie posters quite as memorable and evocative as anything from previous volumes in this bestselling series.

Children of Hurin
Painstakingly restored from Tolkien's manuscripts and presented for the first time as a fully continuous and standalone story, the epic tale of The Children of Hurin will reunite fans of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with Elves and Men, dragons and Dwarves, eagles and Orcs, and the rich landscape and characters unique to Tolkien. There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings, and the story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World. In that remote time Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in the vast fortress of Angband, the Hells of Iron, in the North; and the tragedy of Turin and his sister Nienor unfolded within the shadow of the fear of Angband and the war waged by Morgoth against the lands and secret cities of the Elves. Their brief and passionate lives were dominated by the elemental hatred that Morgoth bore them as the children of Hurin, the man who had dared to defy and to scorn him to his face. Against them he sent his most formidable servant, Glaurung, a powerful spirit in the form of a huge wingless dragon of fire. Into this story of brutal conquest and flight, of forest hiding-places and pursuit, of resistance with lessening hope, the Dark Lord and the Dragon enter in direly articulate form. Sardonic and mocking, Glaurung manipulated the fates of Turin and Nienor by lies of diabolic cunning and guile, and the curse of Morgoth was fulfilled. The earliest versions of this story by J.R.R. Tolkien go back to the end of the First World War and the years that followed; but long afterwards, when The Lord of the Rings was finished, he wrote it anew and greatly enlarged it in complexities of motive and character: it became the dominant story in his later work on Middle-earth. But he could not bring it to a final and finished form. In this book Christopher Tolkien has constructed, after long study of the manuscripts, a coherent narrative without any editorial invention.

I'm Sorry You Feel That Way
THE BOOK THAT YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PUT DOWN
For Alice and Hanna, saint and sinner, growing up is a trial. There is their mother, who takes a divide-and-conquer approach to child-rearing, and their father, who takes an absent one. There is also their older brother Michael, whose disapproval is a force to be reckoned with.
There is the catastrophe that is never spoken of, but which has shaped everything . . .
As adults, Alice and Hanna must deal with disappointments in work and in love as well as increasingly complicated family tensions, and lives that look dismayingly dissimilar to what they'd intended. They must look for a way to repair their own fractured relationship, and they must finally choose their own approach to their dominant mother: submit or burn the house down. And they must decide at last whether life is really anything more than (as Hanna would have it) a tragedy with a few hilarious moments.
From the author of the Waterstones Book of the Month Our Fathers comes a compelling domestic comedy about complex family dynamics, mental health and the intricacies of sibling relationships.

Pod
Bestselling author Laline Paull returns with an immersive and transformative new novel of an ocean world - its extraordinary creatures, mysteries, and mythologies - that is increasingly haunted by the cruelty and ignorance of the human race.
Ea has always felt like an outsider. She suffers from a type of deafness that means she cannot master the spinning rituals that unite her pod of spinner dolphins. When catastrophe befalls her family and Ea feels she is partly to blame, she decides to make the ultimate sacrifice and leave.
As Ea ventures into the vast, she discovers dangers everywhere, from lurking predators to strange objects floating in the water. But just as she is coming to terms with her solitude, a chance encounter with a group of arrogant bottlenoses will irrevocably alter the course of her life.
In her terrifying, propulsive novel, Laline Paull explores the true meaning of family, belonging, sacrifice - the harmony and tragedy of the pod - within an ocean that is no longer the sanctuary it once was, and which reflects a world all too recognisable to our own.

The Kiss
On a warm June evening, a red double-decker bus, full of passengers, speeds down a London street. A few blocks away, a man and a woman climb into a limousine, reveling in a magical evening of dancing and champagne. As their driver pulls into an intersection, the couple shares their first, searching kiss. For a moment, etched in time, all stands still - until, in a flash of metal and glass, their limousine is struck at full speed, crushed under the bus' tremendous weight. And a long journey begins - toward healing, toward hope, toward dreams of an infinite future...Isabelle Forrester is the exquisite wife of a prominent Parisian banker who has long since shut her out of his heart. For lonely years, Isabelle has lived a life of isolation, pouring her passions into caring for her desperately ill son, Teddy, and into making their Paris home as happy as possible for her teenage daughter, Sophie.Isabelle allows herself one secret pleasure: a long-distance friendship by telephone with an American man, a Washington power broker who travels in the highest circles of politics and who, like Isabelle, is trapped in an empty marriage. To Bill Robinson, Isabelle is a godsend, a woman of extraordinary beauty and intellectual curiosity - a kindred spirit who touches him across the miles with her warmth and gentle empathy. Their relationship is a gift, a lifeline that sustains them both through the heartache of marriages they cannot leave and will not betray. Agreeing to meet for a few precious, innocent days in London, Isabelle and Bill find their friendship changing. Then, amidst the sudden crash of steel against steel, they are thrust onto a new path, a path fraught with pain but also with possibility. Now, inside the cool, sterile wards of a London hospital, Isabelle and Bill cling to life, their bodies shattered almost beyond repair. In the days and weeks that follow, they slowly, painfully traverse a road to recovery littered with challenges of the body, spirit, and heart. Together, they must find the strength not only to embrace life again but to face what they have left behind. For Isabelle, a loveless marriage turns into a brutal power struggle. For Bill, a time of healing exposes wounds that cut deeper than steel and realities that will test him to his core. For both, a tangle of changing relationships and the tragedy of another loss conspire to separate them once again. And this time they could lose each other forever. In a novel that is as compelling as it is compassionate, Danielle Steel weaves a story of courage in the face of unimaginable loss. With the grace of a master storyteller, she explores the strength it takes to conquer our greatest fears, showing us how the toughest choices can yield the most unexpected rewards...and how the longest, most winding journeys can begin with a single kiss.
