The Age of Shakespeare
'The greatest literary scholar of his generation' (Independent) explains how the history of the Elizabethan era is the backdrop to William Shakespeare and his plays.
Shakespeare made his unique contribution to British and world culture in the midst of Elizabeth's great reign.
Here, the circumstances of each play's composition are acutely described, and set within a masterful portrait of Shakespeare's England - its early capitalism, its court, its bursting population, and its epidemics, as well as its arts - including, of course, its theatre.

Shakespeare a teorie interpretace
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot, And place your hands below your husband´s foot. In token of which duty, if he please, My hand is ready, may it do him ease. Preklad sa opiera o najlepšie kritické vydanie THE ARDEN SHAKESPEARE.
Antonius a Kleopatra
KLEOPATRA Ak je to láska – koľko je jej? Povedz! ANTONIUS Almužnu zrátaš. Pravú lásku nikdy. KLEOPATRA A ja chcem predsa nájsť jej hranice! ANTONIUS Skôr nájdeš novú zem a nové nebo. Práve ste si prečítali jeden z najkrajších dialógov o láske zo Shakespearovej hry Antonius a Kleopatra – i jeden z najkrajších ľúbostných rozhovorov, aké pozná svetová literatúra.
To me she speaks, she moves me for her theme;
What, was I married to her in my dream?
Or sleep I now, and think I hear all this?
What error drives our eyes and ears amiss?
Len slovko ešte – a k jej nohám padám.
Vo sne som sa s ňou zosobášil hádam?
Či spím a práve teraz beží sen,
čo do omylu uvádza ma len?
Komédiu omylov (The Comedy of Errors) prvý raz hrali 24. decembra 1594 v rámci nočnej zábavy – aj tá noc vďaka tomu vošla do histórie ako „noc omylov“. O dostatok omylov v hre sa starajú najmä dva páry dvojčiat: dvaja páni Antifolovia a ich dvaja sluhovia Dromiovia.

Sonnets
'Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom'
Sonnets are for romantics, starry-eyed lovers and ardent hearts. And Shakespeare's sonnets are the best ever written. But this is why they are also for cynics, for star-crossed lovers and for those who know the anguish of unrequited love.
Some of them are written to a young man, some of them to a woman. And although the poems are full of mystery - why did Shakespeare write them, what was his sexuality? - each one speaks to us from across the centuries of love, hate and the intensity of being alive.
Includes exclusive content: In the 'Backstory' you can find a short, handy, funny guide to everything you might want to know about Shakespeare and his sonnets.
