Předčasný pohřeb je hororová klasika z pera mistra Edgara Allana Poea na téma pohřbení zaživa. To byl problém, který byl v období 19. století poměrně běžnou obavou, a Poe tak využil veřejného zájmu o tuto problematiku. Toto dílo bylo později i zfilmováno.
Nejmenovaný vypravěč popisuje svůj boj s ojedinělou poruchou, kterou lékaři začali nazývat katalepsií, tedy stavem, kdy člověk zničehonic upadne do smrti podobného transu. To v něm probudí obrovský strach z toho, že bude pohřben zaživa. Svůj strach opírá o zmínky o několika lidech, kterým se to skutečně stalo. V prvním případě byla tragická nehoda odhalena až mnohem později, kdy byla krypta oběti znovu otevřena. V jiných zase oběti ožily a dokázaly na sebe včas upozornit, aby mohly být vysvobozeny ze svých příšerných vězení.
Vypravěč začne být naprosto posedlý myšlenkou, že do transu upadne, když bude mimo domov, a že bude jeho stav skutečně zaměněn za smrt. Prosí své přátele, aby mu slíbili, že ho předčasně nepohřbí, odmítá opustit domov a staví si propracovanou hrobku s vybavením, které mu umožní dát signál v případě, že by se po „smrti“ opravdu probudil.
A jednoho rána se vážně probudí a zjistí, že se jeho nejhorší obavy skutečně naplnily! Nebo ne?
