Jedno ráno sa turistom na vrchu Giewont na poľskej strane Tatier naskytne hrôzostrašný pohľad. Na kríži visí telo nahého muža. Nie sú na ňom badateľné stopy po súboji, rituálne symboly či poznávacie znamenie vraha. Aspoň na prvý pohľad. Lano je zviazané na osmičkový uzol, aký ovláda každý ostrieľanejší vysokohorský turista. Kto iný by napokon zvládol vyniesť telo uprostred noci na vrchol takmer dvojtisícovej hory. Vyšetrovania sa ujme komisár Wiktor Forst, ktorý si pred prípadom v poľských Tatrách myslel, že už v živote videl všetko. Stopy, na ktoré narazí s novinárkou Olgou Szrebskou, ho zavedú k dávno premlčaným tajomstvám. Hriechy minulosti tak opäť vyplávajú na povrch a tentoraz nesmú ostať nepotrestané.

Mrazivá obeť
Nádhera švédskych hôr sa stáva dokonalou kulisou pre zločin, z ktorého mrazí.
Štokholmskej policajtke Hanne Ahlanderovej sa zrútil svet – opustil ju partner a hrozí, že príde o prácu. Első méltatóinak egyike szerint az írónő minden bizonnyal megnyerte a fogadást. Az első világháború éveiben írt regényt egy angol kiadó elutasította, ezért New Yorkban jelent meg 1920-ban, éppen száz éve.
A váratlan fordulatokban bővelkedő, biztos kézzel megformált és eredeti karaktereket felvonultató cselekmény már azt az Agatha Christie-t állítja elénk, akit későbbi, klasszikussá vált alkotásaiból ismerünk, holott az írónő huszonhat évesen fogott neki e regénynek, és csupán egy azóta már elveszett kezdeti próbálkozás állt a háta mögött.
A titokzatos stylesi eset nem utolsósorban azért is jelentős darabja az életműnek, mert itt lép színre Poirot felügyelő, aki a háború elől menekült Angliába.
