Je tomu úplně naopak, posmrtný život je v tomto románu prezentován jako zcela realistická součást pokračování pozemského života, v němž platí fyzikální zákony a jasná pravidla, nikoliv nějaké boží vůle. Pozemský život nekončí fyzickou smrtí jako zmáčknutím vypínače s přívodem elektrického proudu u lustru či lampy. Posmrtný život je výtečně organizovanou společností s manažerskými a etickými pravidly a navazuje na pozemský život, ale nezaslouží si ho každý.
To všechno prožívá vědec, evoluční biolog a botanik ve středním věku, který odletěl na výzkumnou misi, a jeho letadlo havarovalo způsobem, který nebyl slučitelný s přežitím. Potkává vlastně už jako téměř zemřelý bývalého spolužáka z české devítiletky, který mu dá šanci žít druhý život, protože usoudil, že patří mezi předurčené pro takový osud.
