Na osudech skupiny lidí, která je soustředěna na uhájení holého života, líčí autor v hrůzyplných obrazech a situacích velmi sugestivně možný zánik a záhubu lidstva. Román je zajímavý, hodnotný, ale místy velmi deprimující a naturalistický.
Na trhu se vzhledem ke katastrofálnímu nedostatku surovin objevuje stále více náhražkových potravin, služby fungují špatně nebo vůbec ne, ponížení, hrubost a surovost jsou pro obyvatele běžnou součástí života, všeobecná krize vrcholí. Bývalý architekt Allan Ung, jeho žena Lisa a pětiletý syn Boy odcházejí z města a usazují se ve starém přívěsu na obrovité skládce městských odpadků, stávají se robinsony na ostrově nakupeném ze zbytků umírající civilizace.
