Fantasy literatúra má dlhú a bohatú históriu, pričom mnohé jej klasické diela vznikli už v 19. a 20. storočí.
K najznámejším autorom fantasy pattrí J. R. R. Tolkien, autor kultového fantasy Pán prsteňov. Určite poznáte tiež J.K. Rowlingovú, ktorá vytvorila zázračný svet Harryho Pottera.ďalšími známymi autormi sú napríklad George R.R. Martin a jeho Pieseň ľadu a ohňa známejšia pod názvom sfilmovaného seriálu Hry o tróny, C.S. Lewis, ktorá napísal Kroniky Narnie, Terry Pratchett, Ursula K. Le Guin, či Robert Jordan.
