Sci-fi žáner poznáme aj pod pojmom vedecko-fantastická literatúra, poprípade science fiction. V týchto dielach sa dostaneme do budúcnosti, pričom dej sa opiera o súčasnú vedu, techniku a o predpoklady jej ďalšieho vývoja. Medzi hlavné témy sci-fi patrí pokročilá veda a technológia, prieskum vesmíru, cestovanie v čase, paralelné vesmíry a mimozemský život. Sci-fi má pravdepodobne svoje korene v antickej mytológii. Medzi najznámejších autorov sci-fi žánru patrí Isaac Asimov, Octavia E. Butler, Arthur C. Clarke, William Gibson, Herbert Frank, Robert A. Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Margaret Atwoodová a Karel Čapek.
Fantasy literatúra sa zaoberá fiktívnymi svetmi, bytosťami a udalosťami Tento žáner obsahuje prvky nadprirodzena, mágie, mýtov, legend a imaginárnych bytostí, ako sú napríklad draci, víly, čarodejníci, orkovia a ďalší.
Fantasy literatúra vytvára bohaté a detailné fiktívne svety, ktoré sa líšia od realistického prostredia. Príbehy z tohto žánru sa často zameriavajú na hrdinské cesty, dobrodružstvá, boje medzi dobrom a zlom, epické konflikty a príbehy o nadprirodzených schopnostiach a magických predmetoch. Fantasy literatúra má dlhú a bohatú históriu, pričom mnohé jej klasické diela vznikli už v 19. a 20. storočí.
K najznámejším autorom fantasy pattrí J. R. R. Tolkien, autor kultového fantasy Pán prsteňov. Určite poznáte tiež J.K. Rowlingovú, ktorá vytvorila zázračný svet Harryho Pottera.ďalšími známymi autormi sú napríklad George R.R. Martin a jeho Pieseň ľadu a ohňa známejšia pod názvom sfilmovaného seriálu Hry o tróny, C.S. Lewis, ktorá napísal Kroniky Narnie, Terry Pratchett, Ursula K. Le Guin, či Robert Jordan.
