Přítomnost camorry je často jen naznačená, ale odráží se ve způsobu a pokřivenosti uvažování i jednání jednotlivých postav. Autor v mistrné zkratce a prostřednictvím autentických promluv a svižných dialogů rozkládá zavedené představy o životě pod Vesuvem – například ty o posvátnosti rodinných vazeb a „kmenové“ soudržnosti –, zároveň však ukazuje, že i z prohnilého podloží vyrůstají lidé schopní hrdinně odolávat vnějšímu tlaku, aby neztratili sami sebe. Třebaže někdy za to platí cenu nejvyšší.

Bude vám lehčeji a život půjde dál. Tedy pokud nebudete zrovna patřit k těm smolařům, které postihl vedlejší účinek.
Kniha klade mnoho otázek, například zda je takový „lék“ na žal způsobený ztrátou vůbec žádoucí, jestli je řešení jednoduše se z nejhoršího vyspat a jít dál, a to někdy i za cenu vymazání citů k zesnulému. Protože i když nikdo z nás nechce takovou bolest prožívat, co když má v našem životě své nenahraditelné místo?
Rudé město
Alchymie je skryté umění proměny. V Angel City ji dva soupeřící zločinecké syndikáty prodávají ve formě drogy, která lidem dá vše, co si přejí: krásu, intelekt, charisma.
