Byl zvláštní člověk - vnímavý umělec a současně schopný podnikatel. Oženil se s dávnou láskou Marinkou, žil ve Vídni, dostal se do nejvyšší společnosti, jeho jmění narostlo tak úžasně, že byl zajištěn do konce života a v Lužanech koupil pro matku panství se zámkem. Na vrcholu úspěchu se ale cítil unavený vším, co dokázal, jako by ztratil kořeny, ze kterých vyrostl, a tehdy v něm dozrálo rozhodnutí vrátit se do Čech. Měl být jmenován profesorem na vysokém učení v Praze. Při té příležitosti navštívil J. E. Purkyně, největšího tehdejšího českého vědce, který se stejně jako Hlávka zabýval myšlenkou založení České akademie věd. Nečekaná a záhadná nemoc mu to však nadlouho znemožnila.

Kněžna a světice Ludmila je postavou stojící na počátku českých dějin. Je první historicky známou českou ženou, manželkou panovníka a světicí.
