F. X. Šalda (1867–1937) i Jakub Deml (1878–1961) patří z dnešního pohledu mezi nejvýznamnější postavy české literatury první poloviny 20. století – v době jejich seznámení však byl Šalda osobností vnímanou jako „centrální“, Deml „okrajovou“. Oba vytvořili rozsáhlé, žánrově pestré dílo. Oba iniciovali i komentovali práci mnoha dalších tvůrců a komunikovali s nimi. Zároveň byli solitérními a bojovnými osobnostmi, které vedly nebo vyvolávaly ostré polemiky. Svazek jejich vzájemné korespondence Pozorné srdce soustřeďuje a zpřístupňuje dopisy, dedikace, básnické či kritické texty i jiné dokumenty svědčící o vřelém, komplikovaném a nejednoznačném vztahu dvou přátel. Vzájemné listy umožňují prohloubit pohled na genezi jejich děl, na ohlas jejich tvorby i na některé obecnější otázky české kultury.
Připojený literárněhistorický komentář mapuje vztah Jakuba Demla a F. X. Šaldy od raného období před prvním osobním setkáním (z této doby jsou dochovány doklady o Demlově čtení Šaldových textů, případně o jejich reflexi v rozhovorech s básníkem Otokarem Březinou) přes další nepřímé doklady o jejich přátelství v korespondencích s jinými osobami až po období odcizení po publikaci Demlova Mého svědectví o Otokaru Březinovi (1931), následnou polemiku, ale i Demlovy návraty ke starým textům věnovaným příteli Šaldovi v dobách největšího přátelství. Komentář také doplňuje některá bílá místa korespondence, zejména dramatické okolnosti vydání Demlovy deníkové knihy Pro budoucí poutníky a poutnice (1913) a básníkova tragického vztahu s přítelkyní a mecenáškou Eliškou Wiesenbergerovou (1868–1918), v němž Šalda hrál roli nezištného přítele a ochránce.
Kniha je opatřena obsáhlým edičním aparátem: soupisem zkratek, vysvětlivkami, které obsahují bližší údaje ke zmiňovaným uměleckým dílům, publikacím či institucím, ozřejmují původ citátů a vysvětlují nezbytné souvislosti, dále jmenným rejstříkem, jenž uvádí základní biografické údaje o zmiňovaných osobách, rozsáhlou ediční poznámkou a podrobným soupisem dopisů i dostupných variant a přetisků.
