V knize vzpomínek Čtrnáctero zastavení poznamenal Bedřich Fučík o Janu Čepovi a jeho psaní: „Přicházel i později s několika popsanými listy, v nichž nebylo takřka jediného škrtu nebo opravy, a s rozpaky říkával: ‚To jsem psal pro tebe,‘ jako například svou tragickou ocelorytinu Člověk na silnici.“ Čepův přítel, literární kritik, redaktor autorových textů a ve třicátých letech ředitel nakladatelství Melantrich, které tato díla vydávalo, bezpochyby znal zblízka způsoby jeho tvorby; přesto jsme si pokládali otázku, zda jsou jeho tvrzení o tvorbě takřka čistopisů zcela v souladu s podobou dochovaných rukopisů, dnes uložených v Literárním archivu Památníku národního písemnictví v Praze.
Mnohé autografy spisovatele vskutku postrádají razanci škrtů a úprav, jež nacházíme u jiných literátů (Josefa Hory, Františka Halase, Ivana Olbrachta a dalších), přesto se v jeho pozůstalosti dochovala celá série raných fází produkce, autorových konceptů, prvopisů, zápisníků a deníkových zápisů, které dávají tušit, že genetická zkoumání mohou vnést nečekané světlo do poznání autorovy poetiky, do vývoje díla i samotné Čepovy osobnosti.
