Music and painting, architecture and landscape, food and wine, friendship and history run through the book. The author is lucky, observant and leans romantically towards the values of an older age. He brilliantly conjures the time, the people he meets, and Mitteleuropa in one of the pivotal decades of its history.

Světová válka jej odvedla ze školního kabinetu na východní frontu a do československých legií v Rusku. V jejich řadách si musel probojovat cestu domů – a to téměř doslova kolem světa. V zápiscích a na fotografiích nenajdeme jen odraz války a politiky. Legionář si všímal vzdálených krajů i každodenního života spolubojovníků.

Tato kniha je příběhem o nepravděpodobném přežití jednoho jména a lidí, kteří je nosí.
Před rokem 1938 byla Morava a Brno pro majetnou rodinu židovských průmyslníků Löw-Beerů nejen domovem, ale i místem, kde se mohli plně realizovat v podnikání, kultuře i společenském životě. Československo představovalo špičku evropského modernismu a oni mu udávali tón. A pak, roku 1938, se vše zbortilo, museli bojovat o holé životy, přišli o všechno. Ti, kteří dokázali utéci, se rozptýlili po celém světě. Šli kamkoli, kam je pustili, v Československu z nich nepřežil ani jeden.
