Arcivévoda František Ferdinand, synovec Františka Josefa I., který se stal po smrti císařova jediného syna následníkem rakousko-uherského trůnu, byl stařičkým panovníkem považován za potížistu a jejich vztah byl značně komplikovaný. Arcivévoda si prosadil nerovný sňatek s hraběnkou Žofií Chotkovou a před dvorskými intrikami se uchyloval na zámek Konopiště a ke své rodině, kterou velmi miloval. Ačkoliv se Konopiště v samém srdci Čech stalo zamilovaným následníkovým sídlem, kterému věnoval velkou péči, nebyl na Benešovsku oblíbený pro svou lakotu a aroganci.
Plány arcivévody Františka Ferdinanda na modernizaci a reorganizaci říše byly přerušeny tragickou smrtí obou manželů v Sarajevu. Jejich smrt znamenala začátek 1. světové války, začátek rozpadu Rakouska-Uherska a počátek nového uspořádání Evropy.

Pavel Klener toho vykonal mnoho nejen pro českou medicínu. Stal se jedním ze zakladatelů a předních osobností oboru onkologie, výrazně ovlivnil několik generací mediků jako pedagog i autor uznávaných učebnic, jako proděkan lékařské fakulty a prorektor Univerzity Karlovy se během dvanáctileté služby rodné alma mater zasadil o zvýšení úrovně pedagogické činnosti a vědecko-výzkumných aktivit na řadě fakult. Nepřehlédnutelné jsou jeho zásluhy v oblasti společenské a občanské po roce 1989. Po listopadových událostech se stal prvním ministrem zdravotnictví a poslancem České národní rady, působil a působí ve vedení grantové agentury a řady kulturních institucí, nadací a organizací. Je nositelem mnoha ocenění, mimo jiné
medaile prezidenta republiky Za zásluhy o stát v oblasti vědy z roku 2003 a Národní ceny vlády Česká hlava z roku 2012.

Stál na chodbe a čakal nás. Malá postava, trošku prihrbený, s paličkou v ruke. V tvári únava, ale aj radosť, že nás vidí. Nepredstieraná radosť, že opäť stretáva tých svojich. Jozef Daniel Pravda, salezián a celým životom misionár. Opakovane sme ho prichádzali navštíviť vždy, keď sa vracal z miest svojich misijných pôsobení. Občas návrat podmieňovala nutnosť zmeniť podnebie alebo prostredie, ale čoraz častejšie aspoň čiastočné prinavrátenie poškodeného zdravia. Zdravia zničeného v službe, o ktorej bol presvedčený, že ho do nej povolal Pán. Postupne sme si zvykli na jeho úspornú tichú reč, pod ktorou bublala neutíchajúca cieľavedomosť, s akou nasledoval Božie volanie. Ale spolupracovať s ním či nasledovať ho nebolo jednoduché. Z vysokých požiadaviek, ktoré kládol na seba, často mnohé padali aj na plecia spolupracovníkov či spolubratov. Že odehraju tisíce koncertů a ani k stáru nebudu muset odejít do muzikantského důchodu. Ale o to v téhle knize nejde... Snažil jsem se vzpomínat na zdánlivě všední věci - a pokud možno tak, aby to bavilo mě i vás. Proto jsem své vzpomínky poskládal - někdy úhledně, jindy snad trochu neučesaně - do deseti povídek. Nečekejte "veselé historky", které jsem prožil s muzikou a s lidmi kolem ní, nečekejte ani vzletné memoáry písničkáře naplněné životními moudry.
Zkuste se mým životem pročíst jako obyčejným příběhem, který má často neobyčejná rozuzlení. Možná v něm najdete sami sebe.

Vzpomínky Alžběty Sommerové Lefkovitsové zachycují poslední válečné roky 1944-1945, v nichž byla autorka se svými nejbližšími stižena rasovou persekucí kvůli svému židovskému původu. Do podzimu 1944 žila rodina v Prešově poměrně chráněna díky tomu, že paní Lefkovitsová byla povoláním lékárnice, a spadala tak do kategorie tzv. hospodářsky důležitých Židů. Po potlačení Slovenského národního povstání bylo vše rázem jinak.
Autorka začala zaznamenávat své zážitky až na popud svých dospívajících vnuků v roce 1986 a nejdříve je rozšířila jen mezi své přátele a známé, k prvnímu vydání došlo v roce 1994 ve Švýcarsku. Vzpomínky velmi hutným a přesným způsobem mapují život jedné rodiny na slovensko-maďarském území, popisují snahy o záchranu dětí a jejich ukrývání, rodinné poměry, osudy jednotlivých členů rodiny, pak zatčení a transport, život v koncentračním táboře Ravensbrück a poté přesun do Bergen-Belsenu a osvobození.
