Rudolf Jedlička - Samaritán v bílém plášti
Život a dílo zakladatele Jedličkova ústavu
Rudolf Tomáš Jedlička (1869 Lysá nad Labem – 1926 Nový Svět) – průkopník moderního lékařství, chirurg, zakladatel samostatné rentgenologie a radiologie a léčebné rehabilitace. Většina lidí má jeho jméno spojeno především s Podolským sanatoriem a hlavně s ústavem pro tělesně postiženou mládež, nesoucím jeho jméno (Jedličkovým ústavem, který nedávno oslavil 100. výročí). Málokdo si však dnes uvědomuje, že patřil mezi nejvýznamnější lékaře počátku 20. století a již tehdy prosazoval diagnostiku a léčbu nádorů pomocí rentgenových paprsků. Proslul také využitím nových operačních technik, stal se zakladatelem české lékařské rentgenologie, jako první v Čechách začal také využívat radiovou sůl, ihned poté, co ji izolovala Marie Curie-Sklodowská. Vybudoval ústav, jehož cílem bylo vrátit postižené a zmrzačené děti i dospělé do života v takovém stavu, aby byli co nejvíce soběstační a nezatěžovali sociální systém.
Z kapacity pouze pro 10 dětí z něho vznikla instituce disponující 540 místnostmi a nabízející lůžka 120 pacientům. V roce 1926 dostihlo Rudolfa Jedličku zdraví zničené nejen důsledky radiového záření, jehož účinky se v té době podceňovaly. Zemřel v pouhých padesáti sedmi letech. Je pohřben na Vyšehradě.
