Dopravní prostředek si vybral vskutku netradiční – tuk-tuk starý 35 let, který si pořídil v Thajsku. Odtud vyrazil přes Myanmar, Indii, Nepál, Írán, Turecko a další země, dokud po 13 000 kilometrech nedorazil do roka a do dne do České republiky. O výjimečné zážitky a neuvěřitelné situace neměl nezkušený Tomík nouzi: zážitky se ženami, útěk před slonem, příšerní Indové, ale i nádherný Írán. To vše vám Tomík povypráví s humorem a nadsázkou.

S knihou Z Kostariky na Kubu, chceš-li dostat přes hubu se čtenáři dostávají do rukou zábavné paměti diplomata Milana Jakobce, který se v nich zpovídá zejména ze svých četných profesních selhání – například když se mu v Kostarice nepovedlo zachránit vymírající indiány, na Bahamách nepolapil a nepředal spravedlnosti Viktora Koženého a nesplnil ani zadání transformačního odboru českého ministerstva zahraničí proměnit kubánskou diktaturu ve stát, který respektuje lidská práva.
Srovnání dvou středoamerických zemí, z nichž Kostarika je ve škole demokracie primusem, zatímco Kuba beznadějným propadlíkem, činí lehce a svižně, na základě lidských osudů a osobních prožitků. Autor na Kubě ochrnul a málem zemřel. Několikaměsíční „umírání“ v kubánském špitále, kde si nebyl jist, zda mají doktoři zadání ho léčit, nebo mučit, dalo autorovi šanci podívat se na kubánskou realitu z nezvyklých úhlů.
Děj knihy se odehrává v době, kdy se Česká republika snažila Kubě pomoci s demokratickou transformací zdiskreditovaného, ale úporně trvanlivého castrismu tím, že podporovala vznik občanské společnosti a nezávislých informačních struktur. Jakobec byl svědkem propouštění vězňů kubánského Černého jara, jejichž prvními cestami na svobodě byly často návštěvy české ambasády, a vzpomíná na svá setkání se slavnými kubánskými disidenty.
Kniha je věnována statečné mluvčí protestního hnutí Dam v bílém Lauře Pollánové, která za podezřelých okolností zemřela krátce po autorově odjezdu.
