Ekonomický ústav SAV pripravuje od roku 1993 každoročne takúto analýzu hospodárskeho vývoja Slovenska. V publikácii venujeme pozornosť hodnoteniu ekonomickej úrovne a výkonu ekonomiky, vonkajšej a vnútornej rovnováhy, hospodárskej politiky, vývoja na trhu práce, ako aj opatrení, ktoré zmenili ekonomické prostredie. V porovnaní s minuloročnou publikáciou je táto obohatená o pohľad na vývoj v odvetviach hospodárstva či na vývoj finančného sektora. Séria čiastkových analýz ústi do posúdenia možností ďalšieho vývoja v krátkodobom výhľade. Jeho zmyslom nie je priniesť podrobné kvantifikácie ekonomických parametrov, skôr uvažovať nad rámcom najpravdepodobnejšieho vývoja a prípadnými rizikami.
Náznaky prerušenia viacročnej deflácie, medziročný prepad investícií, nečakane priaznivý vývoj na trhu práce, spochybňovanie dlhovej brzdy – to sú niektoré z tých javov, ktoré boli pre rok 2016 charakteristické. Nemôžu preto ujsť našej pozornosti v tejto publikácii. Takéto javy sa diali na pozadí niektorých dlhšie prítomných tendencií: napríklad niekoľko rokov pretrvával ekonomický rast s tempom okolo 3 %, pretrvávala neštandardná expanzívna menová politika alebo pretrvával relatívne výrazný rast reálnej mzdy.
The analysis of Slovak economic development by Economic Institute, SAS is regularly published since 1993. It evaluates the level of economic development and economic performance, internal and external balance, economic policy, labour and financial markets development as well as measures that have changed the economic environment. In comparison to the previous year`s publication, this one enriches with a look at developments in the economic sectors or with developments in the financial sector. A series of partial analyses leads to an assessment of the possible future development in short-term. The purpose of publication is not to provide the detailed quantification of economic parameters, but rather to provide scenarios of the most likely development and possible risks in the future.
The signs of multi-year deflation interruption, the year-on-year fall in investments, the unexpectedly favorable development of labour market, or the questioning of "debt brake mechanism" - these are some of the features characteristic for 2016. Thus, we pay attention to them in the publication. Such phenomena have occurred in the background of some longer-term trends: e.g. the economic growth around 3 % rate, persisting non-standard expansionary monetary policy or lasting relatively robust real wage growth.

Publikácia je pokračovaním objasňovania súvislostí príjmovej polarizácie na Slovensku, ktoré boli súčasťou predchádzajúcej monografie z roku 2016. V nej sme predstavili našu metodológiu skúmania príjmových nerovností a polarizácie s prihliadnutím i na medzinárodné teoretické a praktické skúsenosti. V tejto monografii pokračujeme v odhaľovaní rozsahu pôsobenia determinantov nerovností a polarizácie predovšetkým na regionálnej úrovni Slovenska a okruh bádania rozširujeme o dôležité aspekty problémov financovania dôchodkového systému a obmedzenia spotreby domácností vo väzbe na potenciál rastu nerovností a prehlbovania polarizácie. Opäť si dovoľujeme upriamiť čitateľovu pozornosť na potrebu kritického myslenia, predovšetkým v súvislosti s prezentovanými výsledkami porovnania vývoja nezamestnanosti a miezd na Slovensku, v Čechách a v Maďarsku a pri charakteristike dopadov systémových zmien po roku 1989 na regionálnu úroveň Slovenska.
