Stručné dějiny 20. století
Kniha provází čtenáře nejdůležitějším děním uplynulého století, jež vymezují letopočty 1914 až 1989, tedy od počátku první světové války až do zániku Sovětského svazu. Dvacáté století označuje za americké století, neboť Spojené státy americké v něm sehrály rozhodující roli na poli mocenských vztahů, ale i v oblasti novátorského, „moderního“ způsobu života a kultury. Autor se hlásí ke zdánlivě překonanému pojetí dějin, jež dává přednost roli mimořádných jedinců před vlivem ideologií a obecně společenských trendů. Říká, že Josef Stalin a Adolf Hitler a na druhé straně Winston Churchill a Franklin Roosevelt byli prvořadými hybateli 20. století. Nebýt jich, jeho dějiny by se ubíraly velice odlišnými cestami.
Kniha se zaměřuje hlavně na dění v Evropě, neboť to formovalo poměry na celém světě. Nyní se ovšem dostává do popředí mimoevropský vývoj, daný vzestupem Číny i jiných neevropských zemí. V závěru tedy konstatuje, že končí jak věk světových válek, tak rozdělení Evropy, ale také evropský věk. I tak vyznívá kniha optimisticky: vidí sice příznaky úpadku ve sféře kultury a umění, ale v politické oblasti je demokracie při všech nesnázích celosvětově na vzestupu.

A tatárjárás - Magyarország élet-halál harca
Tárgyi leletek híján eddig a történészek nemigen hitték a kortársaknak beszámolóit a mongol dúlás brutalitásáról, az utóbbi időben azonban egyre-másra kerülnek elő a bizonyítékok. Lakosságarányosan nagyobb volt a veszteség, mint a két világháborúban összesen, Magyarország szó szerint élet-halál harcát vívta 1241-1242-ben. Elpusztított települések, menekülők, bátran harcoló közösségek, a kemencébe bújó és ott meghalt gyerekek őket ölelő anyjukkal, kannibalizmus, átlőtt nyakú harcosok gödörbe dobálva.
A magyarság egyik legnagyobb tragédiája, a tatárjárás olyan élesen bontakozik ki a legújabb kutatások tükrében, hogy indokolt lenne átírnia a tankönyveket. Nem igaz, hogy IV. Bélát felkészületlenül érte a támadás, és nem választott rossz stratégiát. A magyarok olyan keményen küzdöttek, hogy egy ponton a mongolok csaknem megfutottak a sorsdöntő, muhi csatából. A király ügyes cselnek köszönhetően menekült, ezt követően pedig mindent megtett országa védelméért, és sikerrel járt: a Magyar Királyság megvédte magát, túlélte a világ valaha volt legnagyobb birodalmának támadását. Egyedül, Európa hatalmasságai csupán imával segítettek, ekkor fogalmazódott meg először, hogy hazánk a kereszténység keleti védőbástyája. A mongolok nem azért adták fel hazánk meghódítását, mert kánválasztásra siettek haza, hanem mert belátták hadjáratuk kudarcát.

Buda története a török kor másfél évszázada alatt gyökeres fordulatot vett: korábban uralkodói székhely és jól fejlődő polgárváros volt, a hódítás után pedig határszéli tartományi központ lett. Már nem a nyugati keresztény világhoz, hanem a Bagdadig és Arábiáig terjeszkedő Oszmán Birodalomhoz tartozott. A békés mindennapi élet helyét az állandó háborús készültség vette át, nem templomok és paloták, hanem újabb és újabb erődítmények épültek.
Ennek ellenére a város középkori örökségét legalább részben megőrizve - a korábbiaktól azonban erősen eltérő pályán - tovább fejlődött, és egyre inkább keleties külsőt öltött. 1686-ban azonban mindennek folytatás nélkül vége szakadt: Buda élete teljesen új alapokon szerveződött újjá.

Több mint száz esztendeje annak, hogy 1920 márciusában Horthy Miklóst Magyarország kormányzójává választották. Five hundred years after the historic French seaport of Le Havre was established, TASCHEN presents a facsimile reproduction ofLes premiéres oeuvres de Jacques Devaulx, pilote en la marine, first published by Le Havre-born “Naval Pilot to the King” Jacques Devaulx in 1583. This extraordinary illuminated manuscript, dedicated to the Duke of Joyeuse, collates nautical, astronomical, and cartographic ideas as well as Devaulx’s own extensive notes, observations, and records as a seafarer, hydrographer, cosmographer, and cartographer.
An encyclopedic reference for sailors, as well as a magnificent maritime showpiece for his royal employers, the elaborately annotated and decorated folios are a repertoire of naval and cosmographic tools and techniques, including astrolabes, nautical charts of the Atlantic Ocean, tabular statements of diurnal tides, astrological charts, and measurements for solar altitude. They also gather Devaulx’s volvelles, wheel charts made of rotating parts that are today considered an early example of the paper analog computer. Together, the folios encapsulate the state of knowledge at a time when sailors pushed the limits of sea exploration and offer a glimpse into the practical daily requirements of Renaissance seafaring.
This edition of Devaulx’s stunning document, produced in collaboration with the Bibliothéque nationale de France, reproduces each of the 31 folios in all their brilliant art and science, including the original colorful illuminations, in particular the volvelles. The volume features essays by Jean-Yves Sarazin and Gerhard Holzer, as well as commentaries from a team of experts coordinated by Élisabeth Hébert and Véronique Hauguel-Thill, contextualizing Devaulx’s work with fascinating insights into 16th-century seafaring and exploration.
