Ukrajinské dějiny jsou z významné části dějinami ruskými i polskými a naopak. Ukrajinská identita se rodila a stále vlastně rodí ze stýkání a bohužel často i z krvavého potýkání se dvěma mocenskými centry, dvěma civilizačními, ba přímo imperiálními koncepcemi či projekty – s polským a ruským. S polským se tak dělo hlavně v minulosti, s tím ruským se tak děje dodnes.
Kniha se zaměřuje na vybrané klíčové události, postavy, rysy a tendence ukrajinských dějin, a sice z perspektivy jejich uměleckého (literárního i filmového) uchopení a rozporuplného přijímání této umělecké reflexe. Činí tak pomocí analýzy konkrétních vybraných polských, ruských a ukrajinských uměleckých děl a jejich kulturního a historického kontextu. Všímá si například Gogolova Tarase Bulby, Puškinovy poémy Poltava, Sienkiewiczova románu Ohněm a mečem a jeho filmové adaptace z roku 1999, Bulgakovova románu Bílá garda či dvou ukrajinských románů o stalinském hladomoru z třicátých let (Ulas Samčuk: Marija a Vasyl Barka: Žlutý kníže).
Každá z kapitol analyzuje jednak určité umělecké dílo, ale skrze jeho recepci i konkrétní historický spor, střet narací, který zásadně ovlivňuje kolektivní paměť a národní identitu, a tedy i politiku.

Not long after the Berlin Wall fell, three teenagers became friends in the East German town of Jena. It was a time of excitement, but also of deep uncertainty: some four million East Germans found themselves out of a job. At first the three friends spent their nights wandering the streets, smoking, drinking, looking for trouble. Then they began attending far-right rallies with people who called themselves National Socialists: Nazis. Like the Hitler-led Nazis before them, they blamed minorities for their ills. Kniha je sondou do života a fungování finanční stráže v letech 1918-1948. Zapomenuté pašerácké aféry z regionu Novohradska a Kaplicka byly dohledány paběrkováním v desítkách kartonů fondů okresních a krajských soudů, okresních úřadů a policejních ředitelství, resortních věstníků a dobových periodik, pamětí bývalých finančníků a mnohých dalších zdrojů. Publikace přináší také podrobné zmapování událostí září 1938 v jižních Čechách a nevynechává ani divoké období po druhé světové válce. Revoluce byla ovšem krvavá záležitost a bojovala nejen s vnějším, ale i s vnitřním nepřítelem, především s povstáním ve Vendée, potlačeném s neslýchanou krutostí a líčeném skrze osudy pana de Charette, nejznámějšího z povstalců, i madame de Lescure, pozdější paní de La Rochejaquelein, která o vendéeské válce zanechala strhující paměti.
