Protestantská etika a duch kapitalismu je patrně nejznámějším a zároveň k nejdiskutovanějším Weberovým dílem. Weber ho publikoval v letech 1904–1905. Zamýšlí se v něm nad počátky a příčinami vzniku kapitalismu, resp. nad souvislostmi mezi rozvojem kapitalismu, náboženskými systémy, racionalismem a byrokratizací státu.
