Down the Earth
Rammed earth is a wall building technique that uses earth, chalk, lime and gravel as raw materials. It is an ancient building method that has experienced a renaissance in recent years as people seek greener and more sustainable building materials and naturalconstruction methods. Rammed earth walls are simple to construct, non-combustible, thermally massive, strong and durable.
However, they can be labour-intensive to construct without machinery and are susceptible to water damage if not properly protected or maintained. Rammed earth buildings are found on almost every continent, in a range of environments including the temperate and humid regions of northern Europe, semi-arid deserts, mountain and country areas and the tropics. The availability of usable soil and a building design suited to local climatic conditions are factors favouring their use.

Transform: The Architecture of Adaptation will explore and document the ecological and urban imperative to revive and adapt existing built fabric, and it will demonstrate innovative and timeless tools and methods for creating successful new architecture out of old structures and found conditions.
The book will be illustrated primarily, but not exclusively, with projects by Deborah Berke Partners, including academic buildings, boutique hotels, and community and cultural centers. Essays by Deborah Berke, Noah Biklen, Arthi Krishnamoorthy, and Alan Brake introduce each chapter. It will also include contributions by critics, planners, and artists with a shared interest in creating a sustainable, equitable, and enriching urban environment. The term 'adaptive reuse' is bland and imprecise. It implies a lack of rigor, as if old buildings were discarded objects that can easily be repurposed, like a turning an old milk crate into a bookshelf. Buildings - good ones, bad ones, whether designed by a famous architect, or without an author are complex things, with histories, with impacts on their surroundings, with relations to people and places. They do not all deserve to be saved, but many do. Sometimes an unremarkable building can be transformed into something better than it ever was. Even good buildings by noted architects can be improved upon, especially if their use has changed or if their context has been significantly altered.
In much of the country, particularly small to mid-sized, post-industrial cities, opportunities abound for the creative reuse of existing buildings. Deborah Berke Partners approaches these building - old warehouses, office buildings, even a historic sanatorium designed by H. H. Richardson - as material resources and as the foundation of sustainable urban redevelopment. These projects have impacts that extend far beyond their walls - this work is part of an urgent rethinking of American urbanism.

This new monograph, published in partnership with the Centre Pompidou, presents more than 80 of Foster’s key projects, from the Cockpit (1964), a private house in Cornwall, through to Spaceport America (2006-2014), the world’s first terminal for space tourists, built in the desert landscape of New Mexico. Each project is illustrated with drawings, sketches and photographs, placed alongside insightful text.
The book also features an essay by Frédéric Migayrou, curator of an attendant Centre Pompidou exhibition on Foster; a biography by celebrated architectural critic, Philip Jodidio; and an extensive interview with Foster himself. Foster has also contributed an anthology of six analytical texts, written across the broad span of his career.

Po Ladislavovi Eduardovi Hudecovi predstavuje C.A.L.E.H. n.o. verejnosti jeho otca Juraja Hudeca, ktorý patril medzi významné osobnosti Banskej Bystrice na prelome 19. a 20. storočia. Juraj Hudec bol predovšetkým staviteľom, ale podieľal sa na stavbách aj ako projektant a reštaurátor. Okrem toho bol členom Obchodnej a priemyselnej komory, Uhorského karpatského spolku, viacerých mestských komisii a pri magistráte zastával funkciu mestského staviteľa a hospodárskeho inšpektora. Prelom storočí jeho povolaniu prial, keďže mestá a mestečká prechádzali veľkým stavebným rozmachom a modernizáciou. Juraj Hudec získaval zručnosti vo firmách Cserey a Wünsch, ktoré neskôr zúročil vo vlastnej firme založenej spolu s Ľudovítom Rosenauerom. Firma Hudec a Rosenauer patrili medzi dôležité spoločnosti pri rozvoji mesta. V prehľade Hudecovej stavebnej činnosti vidíme širokú škálu stavieb - od verejných budov, cez vily až po zázemie elektrárne a turistické útulne.
Výskum ku knihe potvrdil Hudecovu odbornosť, všestrannosť a inovatívnosť, ktoré ho spolu s dobrými kontaktmi predurčili na úspešnú profesionálnu dráhu, aj keď iba v rámci provinčného mesta, akým bola Banská Bystrica na prelome 19. a 20. storočia. Komplikovanosť daného obdobia mohla byť príčinou, prečo sa na meno Juraja Hudeca v priebehu 20. storočia vytratilo. Jeho stavby ale pretrvali a môžeme ich dodnes obdivovať – väčšina budov postavených Jurajom Hudecom stále stojí a mnohé plnia podobnú funkciu ako za jeho života.
