Moderní a lokální: Architektura českých Němců 1891–1918

Jednotlivé kapitoly se věnují nejprve obecnějším otázkám vztahu moderního a tradičního v architektonickém diskurzu kolem roku 1900 a dále probírají problematickou situaci německého umění v Čechách. Publikaci provázejí četná vyobrazení sestávající převážně z historických fotografií a archivních materiálů. Grafika Petr Krejzek. Vychází v česko-anglické jazykové mutaci. Výzkum a vydání knihy podpořila v letech 2018–2022 Grantová agentura České republiky (reg. č. projektu 18-04816S, Hledání identity: Architektura českých Němců 1891–1918). The Modern and the Local The Architecture of Bohemian Germans 1891–1918 Around 1900, modernism was gaining ground on the art scene in Bohemia. The process of Czech national emancipation was reaching its peak and self-confident Czech art was opening up more to the Western world. In contrast, German artists in Bohemia, still belonging to the broad German cultural circle, were only beginning to realise their distinctive identity. They are thus competing with their Czech colleagues to be the first to join the international development of modernism, but at the same time their own uniqueness and belonging to the cultural tradition of the Czech country is important for their work. How did these seemingly incompatible intentions manifest themselves in the architectural production of the time? Today, we tend to view the architecture of the Czech Germans as less modern compared to the Czech production. But isn't this view distorted by our tendency to look primarily for manifestations of modernity in Czech art, whereas in the art of the Czech Germans we notice primarily evidence of nationalism and traditionalism? It is not the task of this book to assess to what extent the work of Czech-German architects around 1900 was modern. Rather, the aim is to present it as an integral part of contemporary European discourse. We want to show that its traditionalism was not necessarily driven by nationalistic intentions, but by a desire to return to pre-industrial simplicity, simplicity and naturalness. Modern architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries had a double face: it turned to its roots and natural domestic tradition, as well as following the needs of the new age. The individual chapters deal first with the more general questions of the relationship between the modern and the traditional in architectural discourse around 1900 and then di

Calatrava. Complete Works 1979–Today

Santiago Calatrava is a world-renowned architect, structural engineer, sculptor, and artist. From the Athens 2004 Olympic Sports Complex to the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in Manhattan, he exhibits a remarkable twin prowess for aesthetics and engineering, a simultaneous sensitivity to both the appearance and the anatomy of a structure. His influences are wide-ranging: Auguste Rodin’s approach to sculpture and architecture, principles of classicism and Greek Cycladic art, NASA space design, and a deep admiration for nature, which he regards as both mother and teacher. Thus, Calatrava’s creations are at once aerodynamic and organic in their associations, with natural forms and human movement informing many of his projects. He takes a particular interest in the meeting point of equilibrium and dynamism. This monograph gathers detailed entries, photography, and the original watercolor sketches that set Calatrava aside as a unique creative master. It includes all of his original collaborative input, and projects such as the Mediopadana Station in Reggio Emilia, Italy, the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, as well as recent works like the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai, St. Nicholas Greek Church at Ground Zero in New York and Constellation, a large scultpure at River Point Park in Chicago. Will also be available as an Art Edition with a set of two lithographs by Santiago Calatrava and a custom-built box, limited to 300 copies and signed by the architect.

The Architecture Concept Book

A refreshed edition of the plain-speaking yet inspirational architecture primer that encourages the reader to take a broader look at the world around us and how we might shape it. Architecture is a discipline that requires constant collaboration with the wider world, but too often architectural teaching and indeed building designs don't reflect this important fact. The Architecture Concept Book encourages the reader to look and think again, to draw inspiration widely and to consider the context in which the building will sit before putting pen to paper, or cursor to screen. Building on the success of the first edition, James Tait has updated his original text with introductions to each section that inspire further creative thinking and understanding. With 18 new pages and 5,000 extra words of text, this revised edition is the perfect way in to the ideas and fundamentals that govern an often impenetrable industry for anyone interested in our built environment.

Kamil Mrva. Architects

The present monograph, published to commemorate the fiftieth birthday of Kamil Mrva, presents his extensive oeuvre developing across a quarter of a century. The buildings of this successful architect have appeared primarily in the region of the Beskydy Mountains: confirming that it is possible to live in harmony with a landscape’s character and traditions while not being forced to relinquish contemporary aesthetics or comfort. “In this aspect, Kamil Mrva was undoubtedly the pioneer of a new, highly empathetic approach to architecture”, notes author Petr Volf. Particular attention is paid in the book to his work for the small town of Trojanovice, which in the view of the jury for the competition “Local Architect 2023” can “recall a Wallachian parallel to the Swiss village of Vrin, where likewise a single architect, Gion Caminada, has taken long-term, independent, and world-class care of this remote mountain settlement”. It would be hard indeed to find an architect that has had such an unambiguously positive influence on the form of family houses, yet equally schools, sports complexes, retail outlets, tourist information centres, or even industrial buildings or public spaces, as Kamil Mrva has managed to do in the twenty-first century. His work can be encountered in the countryside, in small towns, or even in the metropolises of Ostrava, Brno, or Prague – and outside the Czech Republic, also in Slovakia and Poland. As such, this regional architect has increasingly reached national, indeed even international significance, with his thorough and complex approach inspiring a new generation of practitioners.

Frank Lloyd Wright. 40th Ed.

A building by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is at once unmistakably individual and evocative of an entire era. Notable for their exceptional harmony with their environment, as well as for their use of steel and glass to revolutionize the interface of indoor and outdoor, Wright's designs helped announce the age of modernity, as much as they secured his place in the annals of architectural genius. This meticulous compilation from TASCHEN's previous monograph assembles the most important works from Wright's extensive, paradigm-shifting oeuvre into one authoritative overview of America's most famous architect. Based on unlimited access to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation's archives at Taliesin West in Arizona, the collection spans the length and breadth of Wright's projects, both realized and unrealized, from his early prairie houses, the Usonian concept homes, and the extraordinary Fallingwater to the Tokyo years, his designs for administrative buildings and places of worship, and later high-profile projects like the Guggenheim Museum in New York, as well as his fantastic visions for a better tomorrow with "The Living City."

Living Cities

The creation of park systems is a historically proven method for communities to stabilise and cultivate healthy ecological habitats in country dwellings as well as in dense urban areas. Park systems ensure clean soil, water, and air for all. Moreover, they offer inter-generational and inclusive recreational opportunities along ecological corridors. Between 1900 and 1950, civic design - a practice in urban and landscape planning explicitly oriented towards the common good - experienced a heyday. Park systems were successfully used as "green armatures" hosting public facilities such as playgrounds, schools, administrative buildings, hospitals, and gardens. Living Cities offers a chronological survey of civic design based on more than 30 park systems on five continents. The examples range from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Park an der Ilm in Weimar (1778) and John Nash's Regent Street in London (1806) to Chicago's park system (1850), Albert Bodmer and Maurice Braillard's plans for Geneva (1936), and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Valley (1947), as well as to contemporary and future projects in Addis Ababa, Madrid, Medellin, New York, and Seoul. Matthew Skjonsberg's book demonstrates the ecological and social impact of park systems and highlights the diverse challenges that communities face when implementing such projects. At the same time, it encourages a re-evaluation of civic design as an inter-generational practice of urban design.

Ybl Miklós

Ybl Miklós (1814 - 1891) Ybl Miklós magyar építész, a 19. század egyik legnagyobb magyar mestere, a historizmus európai jelentőségű képviselője. Életpályája 1814. április 6-án született Székesfehérváron, édesapja Ybl Miklós székesfehérvári kereskedő, a megyei választmány tagja, édesanyja Eiman Anna. 1825-től a párizsi Császári és Királyi Polytechnikai Intézetben végezte tanulmányait, 1832-től Pollack Mihály, majd 1836-tól Koch Henrik építész irodájában dolgozott. 1840-ben Münchenbe ment, ahol beiratkozott a Királyi Művészeti Akadémiára. Ebben a korszakban készült a Múzeum körúti átjáróház, a jelenlegi Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út 17. sz alatti bérház a második világháború során elpusztult Nemzeti Lovarda. 1864-ben megszületett fia, Félix. Hamarosan céhtag lett, a romantikus stílusnak búcsút intett, s ezután neoreneszánsz stílusban tervezte épületeit. Korai stílusát a romantika jellemezte, román elemekkel, később a neoreneszánsz vált stílusára jellemzővé.

I. M. Pei - Life Is Architecture

The story of internationally renowned architect I. M. Pei's life and work. I. M. Pei (1917–2019) was one of the world's most influential architects. Born and raised in China, Pei trained and worked in the United States, establishing a practice that spanned seven decades and multiple continents. His legacy includes the realization of some of the most high-profile projects of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, from the modernization of the Louvre in Paris to the design of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. Going beyond the usual building-by-building format of most architectural monographs, I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture is organized thematically, exploring Pei's life and work through six topics that were central to his unique approach to architecture: transcultural identity, urban redevelopment, art and civic form, material and structural innovation, politics and patronage, and regenerating cultural and historical archetypes. Bringing together previously unpublished archival materials, specially commissioned essays, new photography, and personal contributions from those who knew and worked with Pei, this book presents both celebrated and lesser-known aspects of the architect's life and career while solidifying his position in architectural history and popular culture. 471 illustrations
