Publikace se zabývá designem nábytku, hraček a užitou grafikou pro děti předškolního a mladšího školního věku v socialistickém Československu. Vedle hraček či knih, které se dočkaly masové výroby a stotisícových nákladů a které dodnes najdeme v mnoha domácnostech, si autorky jednotlivých studií všímají kusů, jež zůstaly jen ve fázi návrhů a prototypů. Podobně jako v mnoha jiných oblastech dobové produkce i v designu pro děti platilo, že mnoho věcí bylo vymyšleno či vyzkoušeno v experimentální poloze, do výroby se však většinou nedostaly. Kniha nechává stranou fenomén „retra“ a soustředí se na inovativní koncepční, výtvarná a materiálová řešení. Medailonky přibližují dvě desítky českých a slovenských autorů, kteří se věnovali tvorbě pro děti s ohledem na jejich specifika a potřeby. Kniha navazuje na stejnojmennou výstavu, kterou do začátku června 2024 hostí Slovenské národní muzeum v Bratislavě (30. 11. 2023–2. 6. 2024) a již připravila kurátorka UPM Lucie Skřivánková.

Biba dominated London fashion from the mid-1960s, defining the dress and outlook of a generation. Bohumil Južnič


Bohumil Južnič (1895–1963) byl předním československým designérem. Ačkoliv se celý život věnoval vojenskému povolání, jeho záliba v průmyslovém designu přerostla v další profesi. Významně ovlivnil rozvoj uměleckého průmyslu, obzvlášť ve třicátých letech, kdy poskytoval své návrhy kovových předmětů denní potřeby Krásné jizbě DP a Topičově salonu v Praze. Specializoval se především na design vybavení určeného ke stolování, kterému dodával elegantní, funkční tvar. Svůj návrhářský potenciál uplatnil i v ostatních průmyslových odvětvích. Od roku 1932 navrhoval textil, zejména koberce. Pro Topičův salon projektoval drobný nábytek a navrhl skleněný nápojový servis. S příchodem války začal Bohumil Južnič navrhovat první výrobky ze soustruženého a řezaného dřeva. Tomuto materiálu se věnoval celá čtyřicátá léta. Zájem o jeho dřevěné mísy, dózy a ostatní předměty, spojené zejména se stolováním, přetrvával i v padesátých letech. V té době rozšířil své pole působnosti o návrhy funkční i dekorativní keramiky, smaltovaného nádobí, hraček, šperků a bižuterie. Publikace přibližuje Južničovu tvorbu dokumentovanou návrhy z autorovy pozůstalosti i realizacemi nejen ze sbírek Uměleckoprůmyslového musea v Praze.
