Alessandro Mendini: Imagination Takes Command

The first complete monograph on the provocative work of influential Italian designer, architect, and critic Alessandro Mendini Born in Milan in 1931, Alessandro Mendini created vivid, boundary-pushing, eccentric work that sits in an aesthetic universe of its own. He was at the heart of Italy’s Radical design movement in the 1960s and 1970s and, later, Postmodernism, championing a sensitive and intellectual approach to design; he edited Domus magazine in the early 1980s; and he collaborated with brands ranging from Alessi, Swarovski, and Hermes to Supreme. Along with his contemporaries Ettore Sottsass and Gaetano Pesce, Mendini helped to redefine the concept of Italian design and architecture. This comprehensive monograph – the first on Mendini’s complete portfolio of work – features a wealth of previously unpublished documents and images. Written by critic Stefano Casciani, who worked with Mendini for many years, the book offers a uniquely personal account illustrated by photographs, ephemera, and many of Mendini’s idiosyncratic and playful sketches. Presented in a dynamic package inspired by Mendini’s distinctive aesthetic, the book is a design object in its own right, with a pink cloth cover featuring one of Mendini’s iconic magazine covers on the front, a sketch of his famous Proost chair on the back, and die-cut laminated tip-in chapter openers with wavy edges.

Nakreslil desítky konvic, hrnků, terin, omáčníků, dekorů a figurek, věnoval porcelánu celý život a porcelán mu na oplátku umožnil uplatnit vrozený talent.

Made by MSCHF

A comprehensive, irreverent guide to the inner workings of provocative art collective MSCHF Made by MSCHF is a survey of the work of Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF, known for their eclectic projects that critique the very areas of popular culture they inhabit. Ranging from a line of designer handbags only visible under a microscope to an anime dating game that helps players generate a functional tax return, MSCHF’s works are incisive, often viral, and always instilled with their unique brand of subversive humor. Featuring never-before-seen imagery, this book presents case studies that explore twelve of MSCHF’s projects in depth, providing readers with a blueprint of how their works are developed from ideation to release. Written by two of the collective’s cofounders, the book features an additional six thematic essays and an archive of every MSCHF artwork to date, together revealing the experimental group’s range and evolution. Projects include: Big Red Boot, a pair of cartoonishly large rubber boots; Jesus Shoes, their designer-branded sneakers filled with holy water; ATM Leaderboard, an ATM installed at Art Basel Miami Beach that ranked users by bank balance; and Severed Spots, in which they cut out spots from Damien Hirst prints and sold them as individual art works.

Mademe

Through images both intimate and provocative Erin Magee, founder of MadeMe, presents the first comprehensive monograph of the one of first streetwear brands “by girls for girls.” MadeMe rose to acclaim during a time when female and queer perspectives were missing from the streetwear landscape. Inspired by the energy of the 1990s when a female-first ethos was actively shaping music, clothing and culture, Magee has fostered the same spirit of enthusiasm for a new generation of it-girls, championing a truly singular and radically instinctive take on femininity. In the brand’s early days, Magee enlisted the likes of Coco Gordon-Moore (Kim Gordon’s daughter) and Princess Nokia to star in campaigns while mentoring industry heavyweights like Paloma Elsesser, Lourdes Leon, Amandla Stenberg, and Beatrice Domond. The brand's essence is reinforced by these dynamic, emotionally charged interactions with females across generations becoming more of an ecosystem than a brand. The MadeMe girl is radical because she rebels against the concept of who society says she should be, she is defiant because she is true–this feeling is always embodied through the garments she wears and the choices she makes. Communicating through ideas and interests across music, art, fashion, and culture, MadeMe has collaborated with the likes of Doc Martens, Nike, Fruits, Vans, Converse, and X-Girl, translating its youthful design language to like-minded audiences through energetic design codes. Arranged by pure feeling rather than in a traditional chronological order, this publication features an extensive range of voices and talents harnessed by the brand over the years including artwork by musician, Cody Critcheloe (SSION), artists, Ally Bo, Shana Sadeghi-Ray, Aneko, and photographer, Petra Collins.

Ambush

The first large-format book on AMBUSH®, one of the most influential ready-to-wear and jewelry brands to come out of Japan in the last two decades. Offering a deep dive into the brand’s teeming archive, this intuitively engineered monograph is a sleek essential for lovers of fashion, as well as streetwear enthusiasts and tech-driven lifestyle culture. Founded in Tokyo in 2008, AMBUSH® first gained notoriety for creating the “POW!®” line of rings and chains, a design heavily indebted to American pop-art and manga which took the world of hip-hop by storm. A multi-disciplinary fashion, jewelry and design collective, AMBUSH® is the brainchild of Korean-American designer YOON and Korean-Japanese music producer VERBAL. Championed from the very outset by the likes of Pharrell, NIGO® and Colette, YOON’s jewelry designs often include bold motifs as seen in collections drawn from everyday objects such as office stationery, safety pins, and disposable lighters. With apparel as a canvas to complete the aesthetic YOON envisioned, AMBUSH® evolved into designing unisex ready-to-wear collections. Growing into a full fashion line that often draws inspiration from subcultures and countercultures, AMBUSH® grew a devoted following well beyond Tokyo. The brand’s uniquely crafted parts form an idiosyncratic style that led to commissions and collaborations with an illustrious list that includes Louis Vuitton (Kim Jones), sacai, UNDERCOVER, Off-White, Moët & Chandon, Bvlgari, Nike, CONVERSE, Rimowa, and GENTLE MONSTER.

The V&A Sourcebook of Pattern and Ornament

A richly illustrated sourcebook of two-dimensional pattern and three dimensional ornamentation, presenting more than 1,000 historic and contemporary examples from around the world. The wealth of surface pattern and three-dimensional ornamentation in the many objects that enrich our lives is testament to the inventiveness of designers and craftspeople around the globe and throughout history. This richly illustrated, easy-to-navigate sourcebook presents more than 1,000 historic and contemporary examples of pattern and ornamentation from around the world, each one succinctly identified and explained. Arranged thematically, it is unique among pattern books, as it includes examples not only of surface pattern but also of three-dimensional ornamentation and embellishment. Two-dimensional pattern is ubiquitous, no matter what the age of an object or where it was created. From Japanese kimono and William Morris fabrics to Chinese porcelain and contemporary furniture, such works reveal humanity’s unceasing desire to combine pattern with design. Just as prevalent are examples of three-dimensional embellishments that go far beyond the requirements of their practical use: an acrylic handbag has a carved motif of insects and wildflowers, a cobalt-blue pottery ewer has a dragon’s-head spout and an early 19th-century fruit plate is shaped like a seashell. Designers working today are as fascinated and inspired by pattern and ornament as they have always been. This expertly compiled selection will appeal to designers, artists, illustrators and other creatives from all disciplines as well as anyone interested in visual and material culture.

Eccentric (Bilingual edition)

Courageous, free, humorous, touching and disturbing: these works by fifty international artists show how eccentric means more than neurotic or decadent. Eccentricity resists all kinds of ideology, and indeed it can be an engine of social freedom and tolerance. Through approximately one hundred pieces - including painting, sculpture, installation art, video and design - diversity is celebrated in ways that defy rigid norms and clichés. Inspiring, thoughtful and quick-witted, the short texts in this book introduce us to some of the most brilliant eccentrics of the art world. The overall impression is just as dazzling as it is multifaceted and shows the full scope of work that is "eccentric" (from ex centro, outside the middle) through experiments with materials or free-spirited approaches to themes such as identity, body, environment and humanity. Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, this magazine-like catalogue is a feast for the eyes and will awaken curiosity about the eccentric in all of us.
