The Art of the Lord of the Rings
A sumptuous full-colour art book containing the complete collection of almost 200 sketches, drawings, paintings and maps created by J.R.R. Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings.
As he wrote The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien’s mental pictures often found expression in drawing, from rough sketches made within the manuscript to more finished illustrations. Only a few of these were meant for publication; most were aids to help Tolkien conceive his complex story and keep it consistent. Many do not illustrate the final text, but represent moments of creation, illuminating Tolkien’s process of writing and design. In addition to pictorial sketches, numerous maps follow the development of the Shire and the larger landscape of Middle-earth, while inscriptions in runes and Elvish script, and ‘facsimile’ leaves from the burned and blood-stained Book of Mazarbul, support Tolkien’s pose as an ‘editor’ or ‘translator’ of ancient records.
The Art of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien collects these drawings, inscriptions, maps, and plans in one volume. More than 180 images are included, all of them printed in colour from high-quality scans and photographs. Wayne G. Bong Joon-ho
Brilliantly illustrated and designed by the London-based film magazine Little White Lies, Bong Joon-ho examines the career of the South Korean writer/director, who has been making critically acclaimed feature films for more than two decades. First breaking out into the international scene with festival-favorite Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), Bong then set his sights on the story of a real-life serial killer in 2003's Memories of Murder and once again won strong international critical attention, taking home the prize for Best Director at the San Sebastian Film Festival. But it was 2006's The Host that proved to be a huge breakout moment both for Bong and the Korean film industry. The monster movie, set in Seoul, premiered at Cannes and became an instant hit-South Korea's widest release ever, setting new box office records and selling remake rights in the US to Universal. Bong's next feature, Mother (2009) also premiered at Cannes, once again earning critical acclaim and appearing on many "best-of" lists for 2009/2010. Bong's first English-language film, Snowpiercer (2013)-set on a postapocalyptic train where class divisions erupt into class warfare-followed on its heels, bringing his work outside of the South Korean and film festival markets and onto the stage of global commercial cinema. With 2017's Okja (which became a center of controversy due to its being produced and released by Netflix), Bong became even more of an internationally known name, with the New York Times' A. O. Bong's next film, the 2019 black comedy/thriller Parasite, simultaneously scaled back-the film is mostly set in just two locations, with two Korean families taking center stage-and took his career to new heights, winning the Palme d'Or with a unanimous vote, as well as history-making Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. Parasite's jarring shifts in tone-encompassing darkness, drama, slapstick and black humor-and its unsubtle critiques of late capitalism and American imperialism are in conversation with Bong's entire body of work, and this mid-career monograph will survey the entirety of that work, including his short films, to flesh out the stories behind the films with supporting analytical text and interviews with Bong's key collaborators. Film a dějiny 8. - Válka
Kolektivní monografie cíli zvláště na problematiku válečné (a) filmové propagandy. Zatímco na Západě se jedná o dlouhodobě zkoumané téma, u nás mu (filmoví) historici nikdy nevěnovali srovnatelnou pozornost a postupem času se „propaganda“ začíná řadit k „nejopuštěnějším“ a „nejzanedbávanějším“ termínům věd o kultuře. Množství zahraniční odborné literatury se zaměřuje na zkoumání sovětské, německé, ale i americké a britské filmové propagandy za 2. světové války. Hlavním tématem naší knihy je česká a slovenská filmová propaganda za téže (a přece jiné) války. Česká/slovenská kulturní, politická a válečná zkušenost (1939–1945) se samozřejmě liší od té britské či americké, takže ani zahraniční badatelské vzory nelze přenášet automaticky. Téma „protektorát a film“ zahrnuje specifika dobové kinematografie, včetně distribuce a recepce, „filmové osvěty“ čili propagandy, jejích institucí, a vůbec kulturní politiky. Další podstatnou oblast představují hrané a dokumentární filmy o protektorátu, resp. o Slovenském státu (SNP). Kniha se přitom pokouší v prvé řadě o nastínění širšího kontextu, tedy o vymezení tématu/vztahu války a filmu, a zahrnuje rovněž přehled sovětských a ruských filmů o Velké vlastenecké válce. Před rokem 1989 byly sovětské válečné snímky hojně uváděny v Československu a v celém východním bloku, v kinech i v televizi, takže sehrávaly významnou úlohu na poli propagandy. Je nepochybné, že 2. světová válka představuje pro ruské filmaře stále důležité téma a že produkce příslušných (vesměs) výpravných snímků se těší podpoře i ze strany současné politické garnitury v čele s prezidentem Putinem, který s oblibou zdůrazňuje význam Velké vlastenecké války jak v dějinách SSSR, tak pro současné Rusko.

Červen 1979: Werner Herzog se vydává do jihoamerické džungle natočit film Fitzcarraldo, příběh muže, sen a jeho realizaci. Natáčení se mění v dobrodružství: Deník Wernera Herzoga Dobývání marnosti je záznamem existenciálního zážitku a pokračujícího konfliktu s představitelem hlavní role Klausem Kinským, který se stále hlouběji dostává do své role Fitzcarralda. Werner Herzog (5. září 1942), vlastním jménem Werner H. Stipetić, se narodil chorvatským rodičům v Mnichově, ale vyrůstal v malé bavorské vesničce nedotčené moderními technologiemi. Ve dvanácti letech poprvé viděl promítat film a ve čtrnácti začal pěšky poznávat Německo. Studoval literaturu a historii v Mnichově, později absolvoval filmový seminář v Pittsburghu na Duquesne University. Studia však nedokončil a namísto toho cestoval a živil různými pracemi včetně jezdce na rodeu. V roce 1963 založil produkční společnost Werner Herzog Film Production, aby si udržel nezávislost. Za svou filmovou kariéru natočil více než padesát filmů. Působil však také jako spisovatel, herec, scénarista a operní režisér. Spolupracoval mimo jiné s divadlem v Bayreuthu a milánské La Scale. V jeho hraných i dokumentárních filmech a knihách se odrážejí Herzogovy sympatie k zvláštnímu a ojedinělému způsobu života často na odlehlých místech naší planety nebo mimo normy moderní západní společnosti.
