Všetci banalite priznávali jednu cnosť: bola subverzívna. Prostredníctvom kultu, ktorý jej zasvätili, sa usilovali spochybniť zavedené inštitúcie – počnúc dielom, cez umelca až po galériu, múzeum alebo médiá. Kolektivní monografie Film a dějiny 7 zkoumá vztah propagandy a filmu/televize (19181989). Po úvodním oddílu zaměřeném na dějiny (a samotný pojem) propagandy následují případové kapitoly, které se programově vyhýbají notoricky známým tématům, příkladům sovětské a nacistické filmové propagandy, nebo se je pokoušejí nahlížet z jiné perspektivy: Distribuce a recepce sovětské klasiky/propagandy (Ejzenštejnových filmů, zvláště Křižníku Potěmkin /1925/) v prvorepublikovém Československu. Henleinovské, ale i baťovské pokusy o vlastní filmovou produkci. Mohl dokumentární film o německých a českých dějinách, který si objednal Joseph Goebbels, nebýt politickou propagandou? Co tedy v roce 1940 (ne)natočil (později) slavný režisér Curt Oertel? Jakou novou zbraň dostali slovenští povstalci v roce 1944 ze Sovětského svazu? A proč si pro ni chodili do kina? Co si lze nejspíše představit, když se řekne protektorát a propaganda? A jak toto spojení souvisí se sv. Václavem? Svůj oddíl tu mají příklady z hraného filmu poválečného a normalizačního. Zvláštní pozornost je také věnována filmovým reprezentacím rozděleného světa po vypuknutí studené války, srovnání ideologicko-propagandistických postupů obou nepřátelských táborů. Poslední oddíl cílí na téma televize a propaganda. Jedna z kapitol kupříkladu upozorňuje na (dnes už poněkud zasutý a badateli zatím prakticky opomíjený) největší propagandistický počin ČST v oblasti televizní publicistiky 80. let, jímž byl dokumentární seriál Kronika našeho života, v oblasti dramatické tvorby srovnatelný se stále (naopak) známými 30 případy majora Zemana, natočenými o 10 let dříve.
Eduard Grečner a jeho filmy
Kniha Milana Cyroně je první polistopadovou českou monografií věnovanou čistě slovenskému filmu. Tato oblast zcela uniká zájmu české filmové vědy, byť dějiny českého a slovenského filmu mají mnoho společných kapitol. Milan Cyroň vychází ze své disertační práce, která se věnovala třem filmovým dílům slovenského scenáristy a režiséra Eduarda Grečnera, která natočil během 60. let (Každý týžden sedem dní, Nylonový mesiac, Drak sa vracia), a to zejména vývoji tzv. scenáristické představy, tedy od idey filmu po jeho hotovou verzi. Tyto případové analýzy zároveň odhalují obecné mechanismy práce se scénáři, schvalovací proces a zapojení jednotlivých osob, fungující v tomto období v rámci slovenského filmu. Pro knižní vydání autor text rozšířil o kontextové kapitoly zaobírající se, jak filmovým životopisem zmíněného režiséra, tak přehledem vývoje slovenské kinematografie v 50. a 60. letech. Kniha tak rozšiřuje vhled do prostředí českému čtenáři nepříliš známého a zároveň poskytuje srovnávací materiál k situaci v českém filmu daného období. Díky spolupráci a vstřícnosti Slovenského filmové ústavu se podařilo knihu opatřit kvalitním a dosud nepublikovaným obrazovým materiálem z archivních fondů. Kniha obsahuje také filmografii Eduarda Grečnera a bibliografii.
