Snaha o využití nových metodologických postupů přivedla autorku k detailnímu rozboru řeči pramenů a možností, jak je číst. Režisérovu osobnost ukázala v ohnisku různých prostředí a vlivů, jež podrobně rozebírá s využitím široké palety aktuálních poznatků. Z analýzy zdrojů právem usoudila, že některé dosavadní kategorie jsou komplikovanější, než by se mohlo zdát z projevů dobových kodifikátorů. Pojetí operního režiséra jako soubor proměnlivých konceptů vypovídá o metodě vskutku neotřelé, zprostředkující však pozoruhodný obraz atmosféry v českém divadelnictví 50. a 60. let dvacátého století.

Mizanscéna a filmový styl
Styl filmové tvorby se od dob klasického hollywoodského systému, který kladl důraz na narativ a postavu, velmi proměnil v dnešním digitálním prostředí YouTube a instalačního umění, kde vládu přebírá audiovizuální představení. Pro jejich analýzu zavádí celou radu nových termínu, které respektují specifika seriálové televize a aspirují na to, stát se nezbytnou výbavou odborníku, kritiku i studentu venujících se televiznímu médiu. Kniha ale obsahuje i detailní a ctivé rozbory rady televizních seriálu jako Veronica Marsová, Perníkový táta ci The Wire – Špína Baltimoru a urcite osloví i poucené diváky a fanoušky inovativního televizního vyprávení. Pri písaní prvého vydania knihy Naše filmové storočie sme sa vyhýbali očareniu z nového, pretože nič tak rýchlo nezostarne. Kniha sa vypredala a my sme sa po piatich rokoch pozreli na ňu znovu. Sto filmov, ktoré v nej boli, ostali naše obľúbené. Ale pribudli k nim ďalšie. Král Šumavy
Král Šumavy (r. Karel Kachyňa, 1959), jímž se zabývá tato kolektivní monografie (otevírající edici České kino), patří k divácky nejúspěšnějším českým filmům, „trhákům“. S popularitou („kultem“) titulu přitom úzce souvisí jeho „nejdůležitější“ funkce, spočívající zejména v dlouhodobém (de)formování historické paměti. Funkce, kterou plnil (plní) programově, která byla (je) podstatou jeho ideologického obsahu. Jedná se zkrátka o výrazný „film paměti“ (Erinnerungsfilm).
Paměťová role je podmíněna recepcí, tedy sledovaností či návštěvností a diváckým ohlasem. Proto se kapitoly prvního oddílu zabývají právě tématem recepce, doplněným ještě o fenomén filmové hvězdy, kterou je zde představitel hlavního hrdiny – Jiří Vala.
Co se pak týče geneze/produkce filmu, Král Šumavy byl připravován v době, kdy československá kinematografie vstřebávala protichůdné změny v kulturní politice KSČ, jež byly iniciovány jednak chruščovovským „táním“ a jednak opětovným utažením šroubů na sklonku 50. let. Po kritickém banskobystrickém festivalu čs. filmu (v únoru 1959) začal být Král Šumavy urychleně realizován jako prototyp „ideálního filmu“ v éře „dovršení kulturní revoluce“, jako snímek vskutku propagandistický, tedy divácky atraktivní.
Následující oddíl se ve dvou kapitolách zabývá dílčími filmovými složkami – kamerou a hudbou/zvukem. Právě kameramanský styl Josefa Illíka a hudba Miloše Vacka se – vedle ideového náboje, režisérské práce a hereckých výkonů – dostaly do popředí zájmu dobových recenzentů.
Vlastní analýza filmu jako systému vztahů spočívá ve dvojím syntetickém a interpretačním přístupu. První kapitola čerpá z nejnovějších metodologických podnětů „nové filmové historie“; je aplikací „bordwellovské“ poetiky filmu, prokazováním platnosti teze, že ideologie, rétorická manipulace, Krále Šumavy funguje na základě pnutí (disonance) mezi vyprávěním a stylem. Druhá kapitola volí (naopak) „reverzní“ přístup. Vychází z myticko-rituální (liminární) podstaty komunismu i jeho „nejdůležitějšího umění“. Z hlediska typologie lze na Krále Šumavy pohlížet jako na (re)verzi „mýtu o konci světa a jeho obrodě“, mýtu o „návratu krále“, jinak též jako na průběh (přechodového, iniciačního) rituálu – s výraznou liminární fází, žánrově přitom odpovídající hororu nebo thrilleru.
Poslední oddíl, nazvaný „Filmy a dějiny na hranicích“, přináší některé (zvláště historické) kontexty či exkurzy: Jednotlivé kapitoly katalogizují české filmy o pohraničí, tzv. „hraničářské filmy“, přibližují průběh a okolnosti vzniku Pohraniční stráže, její organizační rámec a vývoj, seznamují s fenoménem šumavských kurýrů a převaděčů, „Králů Šumavy“, jakož i s informacemi o usmrcených na čs. železné oponě v letech 1948–1950.
