Mlčení, torzo, přítomnost

Katalog Mlčení, torzo, přítomnost vychází ke stejnojmenné výstavě Jiřího Thýna konané v Domě fotografie od 29. června do 3. října 2021. Do publikace přispěli kurátorka výstavy Sandra Baborovská, teoretička fotografie Mariana Serranová a historik umění Adam Mazur. Henri Cartier-Bresson: Paris Revisited

Henri Cartier-Bresson was 'the eye of the 20th century' and one of the world's most acclaimed photographers. Paris was his home, on and off, for most of his life (1908-2004). The photographs he took of the city and its people manage to be both dreamlike and free of affectation. Here are around 160 photographs taken over a more than fifty-year career. Mostly in black and white, this selection reveals the strong influence on Cartier-Bresson of pioneering documentary photographer Eugene Atget (1857-1927), and the clear visual links with Surrealism that infused Cartier-Bresson's early pictures. After an apprenticeship with Cubist painter Andre Lhote, in 1932 Cartier-Bresson bought his first Leica, a small portable camera that allowed him to capture movement and the rhythms of daily life in Paris. Cartier-Bresson observed from close quarters the Liberation in August 1944 and the civil disturbances of May 1968. In between he also succeeded in capturing the faces of Parisians in their natural habitat, celebrated artists and writers and citizens alike. Ever-attentive to different ways of portraying the city around him, Cartier-Bresson returned to drawing during the last two decades of his life. This collection is not only a superb portrait of Paris in the 20th century, it is testament to Cartier-Bresson's skill as a supreme observer of human life.

Ruth Orkin

Ruth Orkin is a legend of street photography - her atmospheric pictures taken in cities such as Florence, New York and London still shape the image of these metropolises today. But Orkin's specialty not only encompassed the urban but also the personal. This is evident in her unique eye that enabled her street scenes to consistently offer penetrating insights into the time and personality of her subjects. And it likewise shows in her fantastic portraits of celebrities such as Albert Einstein, Woody Allen, and Lauren Bacall. These inimitable images seemingly combine snapshot and pose to present the star in his or her role and at the same time as an autonomous individual. Published on the occasion of the photographer's 100th birthday, this illustrated book celebrates Orkin's life and work with an equally extensive and fascinating overview of this exceptional artist's oeuvre.

Terry ONeill: Every Picture Tells a Story

A new edition of the bestselling Every Picture Tells a Story from one of the greatest photographers of the last 60 years, Terry O'Neill. This updated edition includes 32 additional pages of new stories behind some of the O'Neill's most iconic images. From the morning he spent with Faye Dunaway at the pool in Beverly Hills, to walking around Vegas with Sean Connery dressed as James Bond, a chance encounter with Bruce Springsteen on the Sunset Strip, to taking Jean Shrimpton to a doll hospital - these are the stories behind the images as only Terry O'Neill can reveal. "I was walking up the Miami Beach boardwalk to the Fontainebleau Hotel where Sinatra was staying... I just reached out with the letter in my hand and he took it. He opened it, read it... turned to his security men and said, "this kid's with me." I never found out what Ava said to him in that letter. From that moment on, I was part of his inner circle." - Terry O'Neill From The Beatles to the Rolling Stones, Terry O'Neill fast became the photographer of the 1960s. Having an eye - and ear - for music and musicians, he instinctively knew what bands to focus on. And they in turn trusted him. "I remember sitting in a pub with the Beatles and the Stones. We were just hanging-out and talking about what we'd do next, after all of this was over. By this, we meant the fame, being the 'new kids of the moment'. Usually, this sort of celebrity doesn't last. Little did we know that 60 years later, we'd still be at it." Music led O'Neill to Hollywood and working with stars resulted not only in to memorable moments but long-lasting friendships. He travelled with Frank Sinatra. Took Raquel Welch to the beach. Went in the ring with Ali. Put The Who in a cage. O'Neill captured many of the most unforgettable faces from the frontline of fame, and his photographs exude his own brand of serene simplicity, intimate behind-the-scene moments and the rare quality of trust between photographer and subject. The list of people Terry O'Neill has worked with over the past 60 years is a Who's Who in celebrity; from film to music, sports to politics. Terry O'Neill: Every Picture Tells a Story is like going through a walking tour of memory by a man who has seen, met and photographed them all.

Brooklyn-born photographer Helen Levitt (1913-2009) was an assistant to Walker Evans and a friend of Henri Cartier-Bresson, but forged her own path with fierce independence and endless curiosity about the world around her. She is best known for her street photography, capturing children at play on the streets of Depression-era New York and chalk drawings on walls, but she also cast her eye upon the adult world, seeking out moments of movement, transience and theatricality. Following her first solo exhibition at MoMA in 1943, she devoted more than a decade to filmmaking, but returned to photography in the late 1950s and began to work in colour as well as black and white. Evergreen Architecture : Overgrown Buldings and Greener Living

Nature and architecture have never been more intertwined. As more of the earth's surface is swallowed up by the built environment, architects are increasingly up to the task of integrating flora and greenery into their creations. There are many ways to express this: green roofs, living walls, indoor courtyards and entire facades filled with plants. But where these are posed as solutions there are yet more questions. How does a skyscraper uphold the weight of hundreds of trees? How do residents keep moss-covered walls alive? Jungle Architecture explores this, and much more.

Photo No-Nos: Meditations on What Not to Shoot

At turns humorous and absurd, heartfelt and searching, Photo No-Nos is for photographers of all levels wishing to avoid easy metaphors and to sharpen their visual communication skills. Photographers often have unwritten lists of subjects they tell themselves not to shoot--things that are cliché, exploitative, derivative, sometimes even arbitrary. Photo No-Nos features ideas, stories, and anecdotes from many of the world's most talented photographers and photography professionals, along with an encyclopedic list of more than a thousand taboo subjects compiled from and with pictures by contributors. Not a strict guide, but a series of meditations on "bad" pictures, Photo No-Nos covers a wide range of topics, from sunsets and roses to issues of colonialism, stereotypes, and social responsibility. At a time when societies are reckoning with what and how to communicate through media and who has the right to do so, this book is a timely and thoughtful resource on what photographers consider to be off-limits, and how they have contended with their own self-imposed rules without being paralyzed by them.

VYSOKÉ TATRY fotoobjektívom Karola Divalda

Fotografie z pozostalosti Karola Divalda sú dnes v majetku viacerých galérií a múzeí vo Francúzsku, Maďarsku, na Slovensku i v Poľsku. Fotografie publikované v tejto knihe boli vydané v roku 1887 a poskytla nám ich Slovenská národná galéria Bratislava. Originálne fotografie s rozmerom 15,6 x 11,8 cm boli nalepené na kartónoch o veľkosti 30,6 x 23,7 cm. Pod každým obrázkom je opis fotografie uvedený v dvoch jazykoch – maďarčine a nemčine a vyhradené právo na rozmnožovanie a meno fotografa. Fotografie boli umiestnené v ozdobnom kufríku z hrubých lepenkových dosiek potiahnutých červeným knihárskym plátnom, na ktorom je zlatým písmom plastickou razbou uvedený titul v maďarčine a nemčine: A Magas Tátrából / Die Hohe Tatra, Ung. Karpathenverein (Maďarský karpatský spolok). Kufrík obsahoval 30 fotografií. Mal rozmery: výška 26,0 cm, šírka 33,2 cm, hĺbka 4,5 cm Titulná stránka v dvoch jazykoch obsahuje názov albumu a meno autora fotografií. Vydanie v pôvodnej podobe v kufríkoch by bolo nákladné a v obmedzenom počte.

I See a City: Todd Webbs New York

I See a City: Todd Webb's New York focuses on the work of photographer Todd Webb produced in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. Webb photographed the city day and night, in all seasons and in all weather. Buildings, signage, vehicles, the passing throngs, isolated figures, curious eccentrics, odd corners, windows, doorways, alleyways, squares, avenues, storefronts, uptown and downtown, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Harlem. He created a richly textured portrait of the everyday life and architecture of New York. Webb's work is clear, direct, focused, layered with light and shadow, and captures the soul of these places shaped by the friction and frisson of humanity. A native of Detroit, Webb studied photography in the 1930s under the guidance of Ansel Adams at the Detroit Camera Club, served as a navy photographer during World War II, and then went on to become a successful postwar photographer. His work is in many museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Amazônia

Sebastiao Salgado traveled the Brazilian Amazon and photographed the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region for six years: the forest, the rivers, the mountains, the people who live there-an irreplaceable treasure of humanity. In the book's foreword Salgado writes: "For me, it is the last frontier, a mysterious universe of its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the world's largest single natural laboratory." Salgado visited a dozen indigenous tribes that exist in small communities scattered across the largest tropical rainforest in the world. He documented the daily life of the Yanomami, the Ashaninka, the Yawanawa, the Suruwaha, the Zo'e, the Kuikuro, the Waura, the Kamayura, the Korubo, the Marubo, the Awa, and the Macuxi-their warm family bonds, their hunting and fishing, the manner in which they prepare and share meals, their marvelous talent for painting their faces and bodies, the significance of their shamans, and their dances and rituals.
