Jiří Sozanský vypadá jako boxer – a nejenom to, on opravdu boxerem je, i když nikdy na nejvyšší úrovni neboxoval, protože dal přednost umělecké dráze. Box však zůstal jeho osudovým sportem. Masterpieces of a unique art form
From Edouard Manet’s portrait of naturalist writer Émile Zola sitting among his Japanese art finds to Van Gogh’s meticulous copies of the Hiroshige prints he devotedly collected, 19th-century pioneers of European modernism made no secret of their love of Japanese art. Since TASCHEN released The Great American Pin-up, international interest in this distinctly American art form has increased exponentially. Paintings by leading artists such as Alberto Vargas, George Petty, and Gil Elvgren that sold for $ 2,000 in 1996 are going for $ 200,000 and more today. Pin-up—drawings, paintings, and pastels of an idealized female face and figure intended for public display—was produced between 1920 and 1970 for calendars, magazine covers, and centerfolds. The majority of original paintings were discarded by publishers and calendar companies after printing, making the surviving art that much more precious.
This attractively priced edition showcases the top 10 names in the game. Each chapter opens with a reproduction of an original calendar or magazine cover by that artist. The reproduction quality of the paintings, pastels, and preparatory sketches that follow—largely sourced from the original art—invites the viewer to trace the brushstrokes, while the exquisite period calendars, vintage prints, and original model photos document the artists’ creative process. Much of these ephemera were photographed on-site at the historic Brown & Bigelow Company, home to the world’s largest archive of vintage pin-up calendars.

Kniha-objekt, sestávající ze sedmi samostatných částí, propojuje fotografické médium s fenoménem autorské knihy a pohrává si s nelineárním obsahem a způsoby čtení. Kopasz v projektu Dočasné předměty / Temporary Objects navazuje na své dřívější experimenty s formami osobních deníkových záznamů. Pracuje konceptuálně s jedním výchozím objektem, který analyzuje a dekonstruuje prostřednictvím nejrůznějších fotografických i dalších výtvarných technik.
Na listech papíru sedmi sešitů či modulů autorské knihy sleduje vizuální a významové analogie a obrazy ukládá do vztahových konstelací. Místy přidává stručné textové komentáře. Bezprostředně zahlédnuté interakce podrobuje opakovaným rozvahám nad rolí konkrétního a abstrahovaného, celku a detailu, nad mírou osobních referencí a sdílené zkušenosti. Teprve pak je usadí do systému, který má překračovat řád posloupnosti a kauzality. V každém sešitě tak narážíme nejen na vzájemně provázané sekvence, ale rovněž na nečekané střihy a zvraty.
The book-object, consisting of seven separate parts, connects the photographic medium with the phenomenon of the author's book and plays with non-linear content and ways of reading. Kopasz's project Dočasné předměty / Temporary Objects builds on his earlier experiments with forms of personal diary entries. He works conceptually with one initial object, which he analyses and deconstructs through various photographic and other artistic techniques.
He traces visual and semantic analogies on the sheets of paper of the seven notebooks or modules of the artist's book, placing the images in relational constellations. In places he adds brief textual commentaries. He subjects immediately glimpsed interactions to repeated reflections on the role of the concrete and the abstract, the whole and the detail, and the degree of personal reference and shared experience. Only then does he settle them into a system that is meant to transcend the order of sequence and causality. Thus, in each workbook we encounter not only interrelated sequences, but also unexpected cuts and twists.
Hiroshige & Eisen The Sixty-Nine Stations Along the Kisokaido
The Kisokaido route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country's then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaido journey. After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838.
Both Eisen and Hiroshige were master print practitioners. In The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaido, we find the artists' distinct styles as much as their shared expertise. From the busy starting post of Nihonbashi to the castle town of Iwamurata, Eisen opts for a more muted palette but excels in figuration, particularly of glamorous women, and relishes snapshots of activity along the route, from shoeing a horse to winnowing rice. Hiroshige demonstrates his mastery of landscape with grandiose and evocative scenes, whether it's the peaceful banks of the Ota River, the forbidding Wada Pass, or a moonlit ascent between Yawata and Mochizuki.
Taken as a whole, The Sixty-Nine Stations collection represents not only a masterpiece of woodblock practice, including bold compositions and an experimental use of color, but also a charming tapestry of 19th-century Japan, long before the specter of industrialization. This TASCHEN volume is sourced from one of the finest surviving first editions and revives the series in our compact anniversary edition.
Ľuba Sajkalová
Ľuba Sajkalová (1973 – 2019, Bratislava) je na vizuálnej scéne známa aj neznáma. Jej tvorba s východiskom v textilnom médiu priniesla na výtvarnú scénu ekologické témy, etnografickú citlivosť, fenomén pamäti a rodinnej histórie či materiálovú empatiu. Prvá monografia mapuje tvorbu autorky a stopu, ktorú zanechala na výtvarnej scéne a v pamäti jej blízkych, priateľov a kolegov. Ukazuje Ľubu Sajkalovú ako človeka spolupráce – v centre jej života a tvorby boli vzťahy, procesy a príbehy, viac ako konečný artefakt. Ambíciou publikácie nie je iba predstaviť umelkyňu, ktorej dielo sa predčasne uzavrelo.
