Klein Yves

The artist who owned ultramarine In the mid-Fifties, Yves Klein (1928–1962) declared that “a new world calls for a new man”. With his idiosyncratic style and huge charisma, this bold artist would go on to pursue a brief but bountiful career, producing more than a thousand paintings over seven years in an oeuvre now considered a mainstay of the postwar modernism. Klein made his name above all with his large, monochrome canvases in his own, patented hue of blue. International Klein Blue (IKB), composed of pure pigment and binding medium, is at once rich and luminous, evocative and decorative, and was conceived by Klein as a means of evoking the immateriality and infinitude of the world. The works of this “Blue Revolution” seem to draw us into another dimension, as if hypnotized by a perfect summer sky. A pioneer of daring painting techniques, Klein was also renowned for his deployment of “living paintbrushes”, in which naked women, daubed in International Klein Blue, would make imprints of their bodies on large sheets of paper. Often, these Anthropométries were staged as elaborate performances, complete with blue cocktails or Klein’s own Monotone Symphony. This Basic Art introduction presents key Klein works to introduce an artist who was at once a showman, inventor, and pioneer of performance art. With page after page of the ever-alluring International Klein Blue, it is both an essential guide to a modern art master and a meditation on the unique effects of a single color.

De Lempicka

Freewheeling Tamara de Lempicka, icon of Art DecoTamara de Lempicka (1896 1980) lived art in the fast lane. With an appetite for glamour and fame as much as Left Bank bohemianism, she fled her native Russia after the Bolshevik revolution and set about taking Paris by storm. Her prolific, monumental oeuvre remains one of the most vivid documents of 1920s Art Deco. De Lempicka s style deployed cool colors and tight, post-cubist forms into an at once neoclassical and voluptuous figuration. Her subjects, often nude, are sensual, aloof, and powerful. Bedecked in seductive light and textures, they command our attention but typically avert their gaze with an aspect of haughty grandeur. Her subjects include both high-society patrons and progressive portraits of emancipated and lesbian women, such as Women Bathing, Portrait of Suzy Solidor, and her notorious Self-Portrait in the Green Bugatti, showing Tamara behind the wheel. A vision of speed, sophistication, and independence, the work was commissioned for the cover of German magazine Die Dame, which defined de Lempicka as the epitome of women s liberation. Through some of her finest, most compelling portraits, this introduction to de Lempicka explores the artist s unique visual language and its privileged place not only in the annals of interwar art but also in the history of female artists and in our collective consciousness of the Roaring Twenties.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"

Prostor pro člověka v tvorbě Michala Škody

Kniha Prostor pro člověka v tvorbě Michala Škody není klasickým katalogem ani teoretickou studií. Je knihou o hledání jazyka, a to v několika úrovních. Je hledáním jazyka interpretace vnímání a prožívání reálného prostoru člověkem v něm přítomným, a to skrze výtvarný projev a zároveň skrze slovo, interpretující jak výtvarné dílo, tak samotný prostor našeho života. Napříč obory – architektury, výtvarného umění a literatury – pokládá otázku o významu prostoru v životě člověka.

The Princess Diarist

The Princess Diarist is Carrie Fisher's intimate, hilarious and revealing recollection of what happened behind the scenes on one of the most famous film sets of all time, the first Star Wars movie. When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved-plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naivete, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized. Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a (sort-of) regular teenager. With these excerpts from her handwritten notebooks, The Princess Diarist is Fisher's intimate and revealing recollection of what happened on one of the most famous film sets of all time-and what developed behind the scenes. And today, as she reprises her most iconic role for the latest Star Wars trilogy, Fisher also ponders the joys and insanity of celebrity, and the absurdity of a life spawned by Hollywood royalty, only to be surpassed by her own outer-space royalty.Laugh-out-loud hilarious and endlessly quotable, The Princess Diarist brims with the candour and introspection of a diary while offering shrewd insight into the type of stardom that few will ever experience.

Are We Human? - The Archeology of Design

Are We Human? rethinks the philosophy of design in a multi-dimensional exploration from the very first tools and ornaments to the constant buzz of social media. The average day involves the experience of thousands of layers of design that reach to outside space but also reach deep into our bodies and brains. Even the planet itself has been completely encrusted by design as a geological layer. There is no longer an outside to the world of design. Design has become the world. Design is what makes the human. It is the very basis of social life. But design also engineers inequalities and new forms of neglect, such as lawlessness, poverty, and the climate at the same time as the human genome and the weather are being actively redesigned. We can no longer reassure ourselves with the idea of "good design." Design itself needs to be redesigned.

- a tetőfokára hágott.

Duchamp

Readymade man Changing the course of 20th-century art When is a urinal no longer a urinal? When Marcel Duchamp (1887 1968) declared it to be art. The uproar that greeted the French artist s Fountain (1917), a porcelain urinal installed in a gallery, sent shock waves through the art world establishment that continue to reverberate to the present day. Duchamp made a career out of challenging our notions of what art is and, in the process, opened our minds to hitherto unknown possibilities. After an oblique version of Cubism in his early career, the artist made his name with Nude Descending a Staircase (1912), a groundbreaking blend of abstraction, Cubism, and Futurism, with a controversially mechanical titular nude. Around the same time, Duchamp began his forays into the now-iconic readymades seemingly random found objects which Duchamp would present as art, including Bicycle Wheel (1913), Bottle Rack (1914), and a snow shovel, labeled Prelude to a Broken Arm (1915). Duchamp went on to cause even further apoplexy among traditionalists with outrages such as L.H.O.O.Q. (1919), in which he presented a cheap copy of da Vinci s Mona Lisa with a mustache and beard penciled on and, for good measure, the auditory pun of the title (which, when read aloud in French, sounds like Elle a chaud au cul She has a hot ass ). This book distills all the daring and the scandal of Duchamp s art into one essential overview which introduces not only one pioneering creative but also a critical moment in Western art. It is here, amid the assaults on Old Masters and the fractured poetry of found objects, that the art world first transitioned from retinal experiences to what would evolve into conceptual practice.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"

Renaissance

A new perspective Western culture s great rebirth Art as we know it today would not exist without the Renaissance. Widely considered the most influential phenomenon in European art, architecture, literature, and science, the movement revolutionized the Western conception of reality and heralded the emergence of modernity out of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance first gained momentum in Italy, at the end of the 14th century, spreading across Europe over the course of the next centuries, with dynamic epicenters in Florence, the Low Countries, and Germany. The movement found its intellectual basis in humanism, derived from classical Greek philosophy. Across art, science, literature, and politics, proponents of the Renaissance avowed that man was the measure of all things and determined to replace scholastic medieval confines with a revival of antiquity. Under the influence of humanism, artists advanced anatomy and geometry to reach new feats of figurative accuracy and revolutionize renderings of perspective to reflect the human experience of place in space. In Flemish painting, artists such as Bruegel brought new techniques and an everyday sensibility to landscapes and still lives while in Germany, Durer and Cranach pioneered an unprecedented drama and psychology in woodcut and engraving. From Florence to Nuremberg, Venice to Bruges, this essential introduction in TASCHEN s Basic Art series provide a dependable foundation to the transformative reach and sweep of the Renaissance era. Through the movement s famed luminaries and lesser-known proponents, its social and political circumstance, and its diversions and developments over time and geography, we take in an extraordinary phenomenon of centuries of change that proffered individual genius, regional variety, and a wholesale reconfiguration of seeing and representing the world. Featured artists include: Fra Angelico, Giovanni Bellini, Hieronymus Bosch, Sandro Botticelli, Pieter Breughel, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Durer, El Greco, Matthias Gruunewald, Hans Holbein the Younger, Fra Filippo Lippi, Masaccio, Michelangelo, Parmigianino, Pontormo, Raphael, Tintoretto, Titian, Paolo Uccello, Veronese, and Leonardo da Vinci."

Renaissance man in extremis Michelangelo, in pursuit of the beautiful and sublime Italian-born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475 1564) was a tormented, prodigiously talented, and God-fearing Renaissance man.
