Caspar David Friedrich: Infinite Landscapes

250 years after the painter’s birth, this luxurious exhibition catalog offers glimpses into the mystery of Friedrich’s largely posthumous popularity as well as the latest research into his training and techniques. Largely ignored during his lifetime, Caspar David Friedrich was a meticulous painter of emotionally evocative landscapes, often featuring solitary figures or groups of people against dramatic scenery. His work inspired many artists until today. This volume explores the role that Berlin’s Nationalgalerie played in bringing Friedrich into the forefront of modern art history. It also shines light into Friedrich’s remarkable use of pairs in paintings—including his most famous pairing, Monk by the Sea and Abbey in the Oakwood— which he employed to express a range of different perspectives and the concept of change. Finally it examines the latest research into Friedrich’s technique: his early training in Copenhagen; his sketches, preparatory drawings and underdrawings; and his unconventional selection and use of pigments. Throughout this monograph readers will find stunning reproductions of sixty paintings, including several iconic works, and fifty drawings—representing collections from around the world. Coupled with the latest research, they combine to offer a completely up-to-date appreciation of Friedrich’s extraordinary talent and his unquestionable status as a pioneer of modern art.

Munch and Kirchner

A revealing examination of how mental illness informs and connects the highly charged work of Edvard Munch and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner The Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) and the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) are considered modernist visionaries. They were also pioneering printmakers, eschewing the mastery of one technique for experimentation across many. Born a generation apart, they worked in an expressionist mode, in which they did not simply replicate what they saw but rather filtered everything through their own imagination and memories. Exploiting the perceptual and emotional power of color and abstraction for creative expression, they portrayed what they perceived to be a fragmented, harrowing reality; both artists endured bouts of anxiety and depression, battled substance abuse, and received psychiatric care. Featuring never-before-published prints from the collection of Nelson Blitz Jr. and Catherine Woodard, as well as etchings, lithographs, and hand-colored woodcuts from select public and private collections across the United States, this volume puts these two giants of Expressionism in a dialogue that foregrounds issues of mental health and offers a fresh approach that blends art history and the history of medical treatment. The included essays examine the artistic affinities and divergences in their printmaking and the ways in which they used shadows to imagine pathologized psychological and psychiatric experiences in their art. Distributed for the Yale University Art Gallery Exhibition Schedule: Yale University Art Gallery (February 16–June 23, 2024)

Stanislav Podhrázský a přátelé /and Friends

Text kurátorky výstavy Adriany Primusové zasazuje uměleckou tvorbu Podhrázského do souvislostí osobních vazeb a prostředí, v němž dílo vznikalo a hrálo ve složité historické době zásadní význam. Vedle toho fotografie výstavní expozice, kterou architektonicky a výtvarně pojednal Lukáš Machalický, a samotná grafika knihy zpracovaná Pavlem Tichoněm, představují prezentaci významné části historie umění očima současné umělecké generace. Texty: Adriana Primusová, Daniel Vojtěch, Miloslav Chlupáč

Caspar David Friedrich: Art for a New Age

Published to mark the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich's birth, the most thorough Friedrich retrospective in many years. Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) is renowned as the Romantic painter par excellence, his works icons of an age of major social upheaval. His landscape paintings and drawings broke with traditional patterns of representation, and paved new ways of both experiencing and reflecting on the ambivalent relationship between humankind and nature. Accompanying the most comprehensive Friedrich retrospective in many years, this catalogue re-examines the artist's groundbreaking work in light of the urgent challenges in a time of climate crisis. It centres on more than sixty paintings, among them many major iconic works, and about 100 drawings. Selected works by Friedrich's colleagues, notably Carl Blechen, Carl Gustav Carus, Johan Christian Dahl, August Heinrich and Georg Friedrich Kersting, are also featured. The second part of the book focuses on the contemporary reception of his work. In contributions ranging from video and photography to installations, some twenty artists working across a variety of genres and media explore the Romantic era, its attitude to nature and the art of Caspar David Friedrich. The participants include Elina Brotherus, Julian Charriere, David Claerbout, Olafur Eliasson, Alex Grein, Hiroyuki Masuyama, Mariele Neudecker, Ulrike Rosenbach, Susan Schuppli, Santeri Tuori and Kehinde Wiley. These reinterpretations and appropriations of Friedrich's images and themes allow the Romantic view of nature to enter into a fascinating dialogue with contemporary perspectives on nature and the discourse on ecological issues.

Rembrandt - The Complete Self-Portraits

Few devotees of the form can approach Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn's radical contributions to self-portraiture. Challenging the conventions enshrined by his predecessors, Rembrandt transformed the art into a fully realized medium capable of communicating emotional depth rather than favorably immortalizing one's likeness in the finest trappings of luxury. With more than 80 works spanning paintings, etchings, and drawings, the Dutchman's lifelong practice of self-portraiture functions as a means of concretizing that which is fleeting. Across four decades, one constant is particularly striking across media and styles-Rembrandt's dedication to presenting himself from multiple perspectives, celebrating the multiplicity of the individual and championing the unfiltered portrayal of emotional expression. Apart from the thematic concerns present within Rembrandt's suite of self-portraits, the works themselves are rich with technical innovation and experimentation. There is an unmistakable humanity present across the entirety of this oeuvre, each expressive brushstroke and obfuscated feature amounting to an unflinchingly honest characterization of himself, in all his foibles, contrasting states of feeling, and stages of life. This monograph renders all of Rembrandt's self-portraits - from his first experimentations at age twenty-two to his final self-portrait painted a year before his death - and stands testament to a life committed to revolutionizing painterly practice both in content and form.

Expressionists: Kandinsky, Munter and The Blue Rider

The story of the friendships that made modern art. Brought together in the UK for the first time in 80 years, this exhibition book offers unprecedented access to the landmark exhibition's collection of masterpieces. Expressionists is a story of friendships told through art – the groundbreaking work of a circle of friends and close collaborators known as The Blue Rider. In the early twentieth century they came together to form, in their own words, ‘a union of various countries to serve one purpose’ – to transform modern art. Rallying around Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter these highly individual artists experimented with colour, sound and light, creating astonishingly bold and vibrant art – from Alexander Sacharoff’s freestyle performance to Gabriele Münter’s experimental photography, from Franz Marc’s innovative use of colour to the dramatic paintings of Marianne Werefkin. In-depth investigations of major themes and a wide variety of spotlight essays provide an intimate and illuminating window into a remarkable artistic group: their travels and techniques, their interests and sources of inspiration, and the relationships that bound them together.

Caspar David Friedrich: A-Z

ON THE CONTEMPLATION OF NATURE One of his generation's most popular artists, German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich is known for his allegorical landscapes that convey a deep sense of contemplation and melancholy. 2024 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of this outstanding artist, whose paintings continue to gain in topicality - hardly a discussion on climate change without one of his iconic paintings, such as The Sea of Ice, being invoked as a silent witness. Barbara Hess examines the painter's work and his life, from its lasting poignancy to the great themes of Romanticism and drawing. In the playful format of an A-Z book, the author takes us on a timely journey, showing how new views and perspectives can be gained from what has long been thought familiar.

Hidden Faces

Highlighting the creativity and symbolism of covered portraits, this volume explores an intriguing but largely unknown aspect of Italian and Northern European Renaissance art Many small Renaissance portraits were richly adorned with covers or backs bearing allegorical figures, mythological scenes, or emblems that celebrated the sitter and invited the viewer to decipher their meaning. Hidden Faces includes seventy objects, ranging in format from covered paintings to miniature boxes, that illuminate the symbiotic relationship between the portrait and its pair. Texts by thirteen distinguished scholars vividly illustrate that the other “faces” of these portraits represent some of the most innovative images of the Renaissance, created by masters such as Hans Memling and Titian. Uniting works that have in some cases been separated for centuries, this fascinating volume shows how the multifaceted format unveiled the sitter’s identity, both by physically revealing the portrait and reading the significance behind its cover. Kathe Kollwitz

An extraordinary gathering of rare drawings, prints and sculptures focusing on themes of motherhood, grief and resistance In the early 20th century, when many artists were experimenting with abstraction by way of colorful painting, Käthe Kollwitz remained committed to an art of social purpose through figurative, black-and-white printmaking and drawing. Through her work, she brought visibility to the hardships of the working class and asserted the female point of view as a necessary and powerful agent for change. Published in conjunction with the largest exhibition of her work in the United States in more than 30 years, and the first major retrospective devoted to Kollwitz at a New York museum, this book surveys the artist’s career from the 1890s through the early 1940s. It features approximately 120 drawings, prints and sculptures drawn from public and private collections in Europe and North America. Examples of the artist’s most iconic projects showcase her political engagement, while rarely seen studies and working proofs highlight her intensive, ever-searching creative process. Essays explore crucial aspects of Kollwitz’s art, career and legacy, including her professional life and connections in Berlin, her groundbreaking approach to the subject of women’s grief and her work’s reception among artists in the US. Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) was born in the Prussian city of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia). One of history’s most outstanding graphic artists, she was widely recognized for her art of social advocacy and compassion and was one of the few women artists of the early 20th century to achieve international renown in her own lifetime.

Escher

The highly original and unique art of Escher, one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century Maurits Cornelis Escher was born in 1898 in the Netherlands and died there in 1972. In 1922 he first visited Italy (Tuscany, Umbria and Liguria) and in 1923 arrived in Rome, where he lived for twelve years, until 1935. The Roman period had a strong influence on all his later work, which saw him prolific in the production of lithographs and etchings especially of landscapes, views, architecture and views of that ancient and Baroque Rome that he loved to investigate in its most intimate dimension, that of the night, by the dim light of a lantern. Restless, reserved and undoubtedly brilliant, Escher in his famous engravings and lithographs created a unique, imaginative, impossible world where art, mathematics, science, physics and design converge. Published on the exhibition in Rome, the volume gathers over 300 works, including new acquisitions and many of his most notable pieces that have made him famous all over the world, documenting the story of the Dutch artist's genius with the most iconic works of his production such as Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935), Bond of Union (1956), Metamorphosis II (1939), Day and Night (1938) and the Emblemata series, which belong to the common imagination referable to the great artist. The book also features the complete series of 12 Roman Nocturnes produced in 1934. An artist discovered relatively recently, Escher is loved by those who know art, but also by those who are passionate about mathematics, geometry, science, design, and graphics. A wide range of themes converge in his works, and for this reason in the panorama of art history he represents a uniqueness.

Jan Smetana

Monografie čerpá z mnohačetného díla uchovávaného v galeriích a rodině autora, z deníků uložených v Archivu Národní galerie v Praze i ze vzpomínek studentů. Důležitou součást publikace tvoří výběrový soupis díla, zahrnující na šest set položek.
