Hilma af Klint: Tree of Knowledge
One of the most inventive artists of the twentieth century, Hilma af Klint was a pioneer of abstraction. Her first forays into her imaginative non-objective painting long preceded the work of Kandinsky and Mondrian and radically mined the fields of science and religion. Deeply interested in spiritualism and philosophy, af Klint developed an iconography that explores esoteric concepts in metaphysics, as demonstrated in Tree of Knowledge. This rarely seen series of watercolors renders orbital, enigmatic forms, visual allegories of unification and separateness, darkness and light, beginning and end, life and death, and spirit and matter.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Hilma af Klint: Tree of Knowledge at David Zwirner New York in 2021 and David Zwirner London in 2022, this catalogue features a text by the art historian Susan Aberth examining af Klint's spiritual and anthroposophical influences. With a conversation between the curator Helen Molesworth and the US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo discussing connections between Tree of Knowledge and native theories about plant knowledge, the publication broadens the scope of philosophical interpretations of af Klint's timeless work. Also included is a newly commissioned essay by the celebrated af Klint scholar Julia Voss, a contribution by the artist Suzan Frecon, and a text by art historian Max Rosenberg that further develops the conversation around why af Klint's work was not recognized in its time.

Drawing on the avant-garde movements of both Expressionism and Surrealism, the women of Abstract Expressionism redefined artistic practice as an immersive arena for action, process and consciousness. Their paintings were regarded not as images but as events. Although the movement officially began in mid-century USA, it quickly – through myriad means – spread around the world and became a catalyst for redefining ideas around aesthetics, poetry, philosophy and politics.
This new publication, accompanying a major European touring exhibition, will include works by 40 artists from across the globe, from well-known practitioners such as Carmen Herrera, Etel Adnan, Sandra Blow and Helen Frankenthaler, to lesser-known names from countries such as Australia, China, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Mozambique, Romania and Venezuela: women who took up the ideas and methodologies of the movement but endowed them with specific cultural and subjective dimensions.
The catalaogue will include essays by Christian Levett, Joan Marter, Agustin Perez Rubio and Elizabeth Smith, as well as full colour illustrations of all the works.

Surrealists in New York
An absorbing group biography revealing how exiles from war-torn France brought surrealism to America, sparking the movement that became abstract expressionism.
Sensing the emerging disaster that was about to consume Europe, surrealists began to arrive in New York from Paris even before the outbreak of World War II. This engaging group biography tells their story and that of the artistic exchange between the Old World and the New. It takes as its focus the legendary Atelier 17 print studio, relocated from Paris to New York, where avant-garde artists could experiment and where abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock encountered surrealism in action for the very first time.
In 1957, in a catalog essay at a show at the Whitney Museum, New York, the American artist Robert Motherwell made an unexpected claim that abstract expressionism was neither new nor native. It had been born, he declared, of a brief liaison between America and France, an assertion that verged on the controversial. This was at the Whitney, no less, the lion’s den of American art. Motherwell’s remark is the launchpad of this book, which features André Breton, André Masson, Louise Bourgeois, Max Ernst, and other emigrants, including Stanley William Hayter, the founder of Atelier 17. Brett Charles Seiler
Brett Charles Seiler lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa, where he also graduated from the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2015. Seiler's work has elements of painting, installation, and object art, with a strong emphasis on the use of text and language. Sometimes poetic, nostalgic, or romantic, it is an integral part of his art or stands on its own as a piece as well.
In his paintings, the space is indeterminate, the figures are not located and sketchily fleeting, the writing elements seem spontaneous like statements from street art. The colour scheme moves in a narrow spectrum between black, grey, white and brown tones, often using wood. His themes are sexual interaction, oppression, homosexuality, gender, men.
Originally from Zimbabwe, a state where human rights violations are commonplace, his work also makes a mark in the struggle for equal sexual orientation in education, media, and institutions. Výstava Cítim sa ako… predstavuje diela Lucie Dovičákovej zo zbierky Galérie Nedbalka, ktoré odrážajú nosné témy objavujúce v autorkinej tvorbe od jej študentských čias po súčasnosť, rozdelené do tematických okruhov: Rozprávky o kráse, Žena a iné spotrebiče v domácnosti, Zvery v nás, Moja krv a mlieko a Cítim sa ako... It is complemented by a profound examination of his motifs, studies, sketches and documents and provides a comprehensive overview. The current edition pays tribute to Leopold's achievement.
