Picasso Portfolio
Printmaking was fundamental to Pablo Picasso's artistic vision. Over his long career, he made well over 2,000 printed images, focusing on the intaglio techniques of etching, engraving, drypoint and aquatint, as well as on lithography and linoleum cut. This publication, published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, explores Picasso's creative process in printmaking starting in the early years of the twentieth century with his Blue and Rose periods, and extending up to the last years of his life. Divided into 12 thematic sections, the book presents highlights from the Museum's extraordinary collection of Picasso's prints. These include such celebrated masterworks as "The Minotauromachy" and "The Weeping Woman" from the 1930s, as well as evolving states that reveal how Picasso's imagery developed. One example of such metamorphosis is seen in a series of lithographs from the 1940s in which a progression is established from the realistic depiction of a bull to one that is completely abstract and captured in just a few lines. Other prints reveal changing interpretations of the women in Picasso's life, who served both as artistic subjects and as catalytic forces for his creativity. Filled with full-page illustrations accompanied by extended captions, A Picasso Portfolio features an essay by Deborah Wye, Chief Curator of Prints and Illustrated Books at MoMA, and introductions to each thematic section. The book concludes with a chronology and bibliography focusing on Picasso's printmaking.

Bratislavský hrad na grafikách
Slovenské národné múzeum – Historické múzeum má vo svojich zbierkach vyše 1200 grafík rôznych tematických zobrazení a techník. Vynález kníhtlače, okrem zaznamenania písomného prejavu, umožnil aj značné rozšírenie obrazového materiálu. Vo veľkom sa začali vydávať rytiny oslavujúce panovníkov, mytologické výjavy a spoločenské udalosti alebo pohľady na mestá. V 16. storočí prišli do módy spracovania cestopisov s množstvom obrazovej prílohy zobrazujúcej krajiny a mestá, čo umožnilo spoznávať vzdialené končiny širšej populácii oveľa viac ako stáročia predtým. Jednou z takýchto veľkých publikácií, ktorá sa zaoberala aj územím Slovenska je Civitates orbis terrarum od G. Brauna a F. Hogenberga z roku 1572. Vďaka tejto knihe sa prvýkrát stretávame s vedutou Bratislavy, reálne zobrazujúcou budovy a vzhľad mesta. Od 17. storočia počet grafických zobrazení Bratislavy a hradu postupne rastie a vrchol dosahuje v 19. storočí, keď sa okrem tradičných celkových vedút mesta objavujú pohľady na jednotlivé časti mesta či významné budovy. Grafiky zobrazujúce Bratislavský hrad nám umožňujú sledovať premeny hradu od 16. storočia. Sú na nich zobrazené prestavby hradu uskutočnené Ferdinandom I., Pálfiovcami, Máriou Teréziou, ale aj stav hradného areálu po požiari v roku 1811. Od 19. storočia sa ruina Bratislavského hradu nezriedka predstavuje ako romantická spomienka na slávnu minulosť. Vďaka romanticky pôsobiacim prácam K. Frecha poznáme viaceré zákutia mesta, ako aj niektoré detaily hradných budov. S vynálezom fotografie však postupne upadá záujem o vydávanie rytín, napriek tomu sú hodnotným svedectvom doby a cieľom zberateľstva ako historický a umelecký dokument.

Podnětem ke vzniku této knihy, která dalece přesahuje obvyklé pojetí katalogu, byla výstava v Liberci v roce 2024 kurátorovaná Luďkem Lukuvkou. Z iniciačního setkání vznikla nakonec odvážná přehlídka malby, kresby a osobité animace, namísto plánované typografie. František Štorm (*1966) patří k předním světovým typografům-tvůrcům písma. Paralelně s jeho dlouholetým působením na poli užité grafiky vznikala vždy volná tvorba, zejména linoryty a kresby, ale v posledních letech také malby větších formátů. Kniha Libero zachycuje Štormovo tvůrčí vzepětí posledních let, ve kterém přirozené koexistují grafický design, knižní ilustrace a zakázky s volnou tvorbou. V té se stále více prosazují olejomalby a akvarely inspirované třeba jihočeskými rybníky nebo zážitky z cest. Šíři Štormova uměleckého záběru zachycuje Libero i ve výtvarném zpracování hudebních aktivit, díky nimž zasahuje velký okruh svých fanoušku. Joaquin Sorolla
The Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) understood like no other of his time how to encompass the light of the South in color and to capture the fleeting moment in his own special way with light-dark contrasts as well as modern color compositions. He was a passionate artist and loving family man. He often painted outdoors until he was physically exhausted, in order to depict the full beauty of nature with all its light conditions. Joy and sorrow often lay close together. Nevertheless, the profession of an artist was the only real choice for him: orphaned at the age of two, he was to become a locksmith like his foster father—but when Sorolla's drawing talent came to light, he was allowed to attend the drawing class at the School of Arts and Crafts and later the Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. Again and again he traveled through Europe, he studied in Rome and experienced the zeitgeist of the Parisian impressionist scene. Initially, he painted socially critical everyday scenes and historical themes in muted colors, but his color palette and content brightened over time. With sun-flooded paintings he left his mark on Spanish Impressionism and impressed contemporaries such as for example Claude Monet (1840-1926). From 1911 onwards, he put all his energy into the ambitious commission of the Hispanic Society of America, which envisaged presenting Spain in 14 large-format paintings. In doing so, he placed his own artistic development behind the service of his fatherland. He painted the Vision of Spain for eight years and suffered a stroke in 1919, shortly after completion. Sorolla was one of the most important and commercially successful artists of the turn of the century.
