Témami korešpondencie Prečana a Kvetka boli spočiatku osud proskribovaného historika odboja Jozefa Jablonického a viaceré otázky slovenských dejín 20. storočia. Tie Kvetko vnímal ako ich priamy účastník a aktívny tvorca (odbojový činiteľ, povojnový povereník), zatiaľ čo Prečan patril medzi najvýznamnejších spracovateľov týchto tém (jeho dva zväzky dokumentov o Slovenskom národnom povstaní sú dodnes neprekonané). Listová komunikácia exulantov taktiež poodhaľuje zákulisie mnohých aspektov života protikomunistickej emigrácie i domáceho disentu. Publikácia ponúka aj nahliadnutie do „kuchyne“ príprav exilových vydaní diel najvýznamnejších disidentov zo Slovenska – Milana Šimečku, Miroslava Kusého, Hany Ponickej a najmä Jablonického samizdatových štúdií.
George Whitefield
Temná atmosféra severských thrillerů, záhadné vraždy a nečekaný motiv
Reason, Carnival and Honour
What does free speech really mean? How does our understanding of it differ around the world? Why does it divide us – and how can we find common ground?
What free speech really means is hotly contested. Is it increasingly under attack in our democracies, or is it being weaponized by the powerful? These debates don’t just happen in the news: they divide families, strain relationships. This is because, anthropologist Matei Candea shows, arguments about free speech are not just about abstract principles: they question what it means to be a good person, to have empathy and courage. They involve fears for the future and longings for the past – and they demand that you pick a side, right now!
In order to move away from the simple binaries of polarised debate, Candea shows us that we need to start counting to three. Deploying the power of thinking anthropologically, Reason, Carnival and Honour outlines three visions of free speech – Reason, or civil rational debate; Carnival, or the right to be outrageous; and Honour, the duty to stand by one’s word. Sometimes supporting each other and sometimes at odds, they entail very different understandings of what language is and does, of what it means to be free.
Building on years of research and an exploration of anthropological literature from around the globe – from tales of French cartoonists to Egyptian Bedouin women, Finnish talk-show hosts to Tibetan Buddhist monks – Reason, Carnival and Honour reveals a richer landscape of differences, to help us find new alliances and even answers to the question of what it is we’re really arguing about.

The Social Lives of Birds
'A tour-de-force survey of how birds live their lives - with all the drama, surprise, humour, sadness and amazement of any human soap-opera' - Stephen Moss, author of Ten Birds That Changed the World'Utterly fascinating . . . Strassmann is the perfect guide to this world: an author as much fascinated by the science and research as she is motivated by the sheer joy and wonder of the birds themselves' - James Macdonald Lockhart, author of RaptorIn The Social Lives of Birds, evolutionary biologist Joan Strassmann examines what it means for birds of a feather to flock together. Some birds sleep together. Some join the foraging groups of other species. Some are only social during the breeding season, forming nesting colonies in trees, cliffs, and sandbanks. Some are altruistic, helping to rear young that are not their own. Some males perform mating dances together. Strassmann explains how flocks provide safety in numbers, roosts offer warmth and shelter, and colonies allow for protected breeding. But group behavior is not without its costs-including increased competition, infidelities, tick infestations, and more. Strassmann exposes the conflicts birds face and the many ways in which they resolve these conflicts. With stories of birds from around the world-from broad-winged hawks that migrate south together in the fall, tree swallows that roost together in the thousands, and tropical anis that nest in communes-The Social Lives of Birds explores the different kinds of bird groups and what to look for when watching them. Above all, it reveals that solitary life, it seems, is not for the birds. 'Delightful and informative' - Lee Dugatkin, author of How to Tame a Fox (and Build a Dog)

Too Good to Waste
Paper was a precious commodity in the eighteenth century: every sheet was made by hand. There was therefore a significant market in recycling substandard paper from paper mills and discarded proofs and sheets from printers and booksellers for secondary use, alongside a black market in which stealing and receiving stolen paper took place on a vast scale. A single piece of paper could be termed ‘waste’ and yet sold for cash three times in succession, on each occasion performing a useful function. The end user would keep the newly purchased ‘waste’ or paper wrapping in a special drawer from which it would be taken for a myriad household purposes, including cooking, needlework, decoration and hygiene. Popular satirical prints depicted explicit paper uses, while creators of flamboyant papier mâché ceilings concealed the material by gilding it. With 90 illustrations, and drawing on letters from a range of people from farmers to notable authors and members of the aristocracy, together with meticulous archival research, this book traces the extraordinary history of ingenious paper recycling in eighteenth-century England.
Mindfulness-Based Somatic Emotional Processing
A guide for working with emotions and unprocessed traumas• Explains the simple yet transformative protocols and techniques of Mindfulness-Based Somatic Emotional Processing (MBSEP)• Describes how to work with specific emotional states, such as anxiety, grief and anger, and how to integrate MBSEP with other healing modalities• Demonstrates concepts and practices in detail through dozens of case studies from the authors’ decades of therapy practiceDeveloped by Robert Weisz, PhD, the practice of Mindfulness-Based Somatic Emotional Processing (MBSEP) combines mindfulness and somatic perception to help regulate emotions and process traumas that are stored in the body. The authors demonstrate these concepts and methods through decades of case studies and practical, accessible, step-by-step exercises. Humans are emotional beings who feel and experience emotions in their bodies. Weisz and Blackwood explore the contrast between somatic, body-based emotions and the mental, cognitively-based stories, explanations, and judgments of the thinking mind. The authors describe the “struggle factor” and why it is futile to resist having negative emotions. They demonstrate how to be mindfully present with emotional states like anxiety, anger, and grief, and they detail the healing influence of compassionate attention. Their methods foster neuroplasticity to create and expand neuronal linkages in the brain and nervous system. By encouraging acceptance, compassion, and the experiential truth of our embodied emotions, Weisz and Blackwood have created a practical and flexible protocol for processing and regulating emotions. They also show how MBSEP is easily integrated with other healing modalities, making it a valuable resource for home practitioners and therapists alike.
