Aristotles Guide to Self-Persuasion
Show yourself who's in charge using the original art of persuasion, backed by contemporary pop culture examples that make transforming your habits and achieving goals easy, even fun-from the New York Times bestselling author of Thank You for Arguing
Rhetoric once sat at the centre of elite education. Alexander the Great, Shakespeare and Martin Luther King, Jr. used it to build empires, write deathless literature and inspire democracies. Here, Heinrichs shows us how these persuasive tools, honed over more than three thousand years of use persuading others, can be turned on our most difficult audiences - ourselves. Using techniques invented by the likes of Aristotle and Cicero and deployed by some of history's most persuasive characters, we see how rhetoric can convert the gloomiest of situations into positive ones.
Illustrated with examples from history and pop culture - Winston Churchill, Iron Man, Dolly Parton, and the woman who serendipitously invented the chocolate chip cookie - Aristotle's Guide to Self-Persuasion tests the tools of self-persuasion and asks: Can the same techniques that seduce lovers, sell diet books and overturn governments help us achieve our most desired goals?
Filled with entertaining and scientific studies that showcase the life-changing power of language, Aristotle's Guide to Self-Persuasion will teach you how to be the most successful person you can be, just by talking to yourself.

For Rouenna
From the National Book Award-winning author of The Friend, one of the most celebrated novelists of her generation, the story of a woman's experiences of war and an unusual friendship'Resonant and provocative' VOGUE 'One of my favourite authors' NATALIE PORTMANI did not remember a Rouenna Zycinski. I was sure I had never known her. But many years ago, according to her letter, we had been neighbors in the same public housing project, on Staten Island. A writer receives a letter from an old acquaintance, recalling their shared childhood and asking if they can meet. Though fascinated by the stories Rouenna tells about her life as a combat nurse in Vietnam, the narrator flatly declines her request that they collaborate on a memoir. It is only later, in the aftermath of Rouenna's shocking death, that the narrator is drawn to write about her friend - and her friend's war. Writing Rouenna's story becomes all-consuming: at once a necessity and the only consolation. 'For Rouenna is about everything: war and remembrance, how we invent our "selves" and why; why we kill ourselves - or live. I was dazzled by this book' WASHINGTON POST 'Beautifully written . . . mesmerizing . . . enthralling' O, THE OPRAH MAGAZINE'An entirely different kind of war novel . . . What emerges is something that feels like truth' SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Wrong Passport
‘This country is like a little island, where the people live so happily, as if nothing was wrong with the world...’ When Ralph Brewster wrote those lines, in the summer of 1943, Hungary’s involvement in WWII was still barely felt in Budapest. Less than a year later the Nazis took over. Born an American but given Italian nationality as a child (the ‘Wrong Passport’ of the title) Brewster refused to return ‘home’ to Italy to fight for Mussolini. Instead, he went into hiding in Budapest and his story of life in a country at war, resorting to ever more desperate measures to dodge detection, makes fascinating reading. As Fascists tighten their grip and the Soviets begin their advance, the once-carefree city of coffee houses, concert halls and thermal baths is torn apart and Brewster’s world disintegrates, together with that of his extraordinary cast of characters: the Archimandrite, the art-dealer spy, the cinema impresario, the Jewish philosophy student who refuses to wear the yellow star and the real-life ‘English Patient’.

The Politicization of Gender
This book investigates the strategic use of gender by far-right parties in Europe to mobilize voters and legitimize exclusionary nationalist agendas. Through comparative case studies of Italy and the Netherlands, it analyzes how parties deploy gendered narratives to oppose feminist and LGBTQ+ rights, justify anti-immigrant policies, and consolidate political power. Drawing on political speeches, campaign materials, manifestos, media coverage, and electoral data, the study reveals the intersections of gender with race, religion, and class in shaping political discourse. The monograph shows that gender is not a peripheral concern but a central axis in far-right strategies, influencing public opinion, social norms, and policy outcomes. By uncovering these dynamics, the book offers insights into the broader implications of far-right politics for democracy, social justice, and inclusive governance in Europe.

The Knocking
In a house this haunted, both the living and the dead pose dangers to a female journalist in nineteenth-century New York in a chilling historical gothic by the author of Who Is the Liar. It’s 1850 when intrepid journalist and women’s-rights advocate Edith Ann, “E. A.,” Howe arrives at the home of iconic newspaper founder Horace Greeley. Her assignment is to chronicle the uncanny gifts of Cathie Fox, an eleven-year-old medium in Horace’s charge. Mysterious knocking sounds follow Cathie as she channels the restless spirit of the Greeleys’ deceased son, Pickie—a ghostly consolation to Horace’s profoundly unwell and grieving wife. As her condition worsens, E. A. suspects foul play. Something is very wrong in this house. Sharp-tongued housekeepers warn her to steer clear of the attic. Pickie’s alleged messages from beyond are more disturbing than comforting. And the seemingly guileless Cathie claims that the house is eating her alive. All the while Cathie’s beautiful English governess is awakening something restless in E. A. As she wrestles with her own childhood terrors, E. A. must investigate the story of the spirit-knockings and reveal whether the greatest threats are coming from the living or the dead. © 2026 by Laura Lee Bahr, all rights reserved.
