Murder in the Cathedral (EN)
Audiobook by T. S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral is both a fascinating retelling of the twelfth-century assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket and a compelling call for resistance in the face of intimidation. Written against the backdrop of rising Fascism in twentieth-century Europe, Eliot’s classic verse play is as relevant now as it ever was.

Cathedral
"Cathedral is a masterpiece, one of the best historical novels I've read in a long time. Spellbinding and so evocative of place and time. A triumph."-Dan Jones
"Fascinating, fun, and gripping to the very end."-Roddy Doyle
A sweeping story about obsession, mysticism, art, and earthly desire.
At the centre of this story, is the Cathedral. Its design and construction in the 12th and 13th centuries in the fictional town of Hagenburg unites a vast array of unforgettable characters whose fortunes are inseparable from the shifting political factions and economic interests vying for supremacy. From the bishop to his treasurer to local merchants and lowly stonecutters, everyone, even the town's Jewish denizens, is implicated and affected by the slow rise of Hagenburg's Cathedral, which in no way enforces morality or charity.
Around this narrative core, Ben Hopkins has constructed his own monumental edifice, a choral novel that is rich with the vicissitudes of mercantilism, politics, religion, and human enterprise. Ambitious, immersive, a remarkable feat of imagination, Cathedral deftly combines historical fiction, the literary novel of ideas, and a tale of adventure and intrigue.
Fans of authors like Umberto Eco, Elif Shafak, Hilary Mantel, Ken Follett and Jose Saramago will delight at the atmosphere, the beautiful prose, and the vivid characters of Ben Hopkins's Cathedral.

Paris and Her Cathedrals
For history readers, travelers, and scholars alike, an indispensable behind-the-scenes guide to the great cathedrals of Paris.
“So infectious is R. Howard Bloch’s passion for his subject that even those unable to do the traveling required will find in Paris and Her Cathedrals an inspiring guide to these time-hallowed masterpieces of medieval culture.” ?Colin Jones, author of Paris and The Great Nation
Over the years, R. Howard Bloch has become renowned for the insider tours of Paris that he gives to students abroad. Long sought after by travelers and history buffs for his near-encyclopedic knowledge of French cathedrals, the eminent French literature scholar finally shares his expertise with a wider audience.
In Paris and Her Cathedrals, six of the most sublime cathedrals in the penumbra of Paris?Saint-Denis, Notre-Dame, Chartres, Sainte-Chapelle, Amiens, Reims?are illumined in magnificent detail as Bloch, taking us from the High Middle Ages to the devastating fire that set Notre-Dame ablaze in 2019, traces the evolution of each in turn. Written from the premise that “seeing is enhanced by knowing,” each chapter is organized along the lines of a walk around and then through the space of the cathedral, such that the actual or virtual visitor feels the rich sweep of the church, “the essence of these architectural wonders” (Antonia Felix).
Animating the past with lush evocations of architectural splendor?from flying buttresses and jewel-encrusted shrines to hidden burial grounds and secret chambers?Bloch then contextualizes the cathedrals within the annals of French history. Here thrilling tales of kingly intrigue?as in Saint-Chapelle, where the pious King Louis IX amassed relics, including Christ’s crown of thorns?and audacious abbots are interspersed with anecdotes about the meeting of aristocratic and everyday life, culminating in “a rich, colorful narrative that clearly but expertly explains the history and symbolism of some of the world’s most magnificent buildings” (Ross King).
To be read in preparation for an enlightened visit or merely to open a window upon the High Middle Ages in France, Paris and Her Cathedrals is a “revelation,” an “indispensable guide” (Garry Wills) to these awe-inspiring structures. Complete with the author’s own photographs, this beautifully illustrated volume vitally enhances our understanding of the history of Paris and its environs. 96 photographs and two maps
St.Elisabeths Cathedral, Košice
2007 was the year when we celebrated the 800th anniversary of the birth of St. Elisabeth of the House of Arpad, the sainted princess who was a daughter of Hungary’s King Andras II and Gertrude of Merania, and a younger sister of King Bela IV. Born at Sarospatak, at the age of four she was betrothed to Hermann, future Duke of Thuringia, and grew up as a child in the Thuringian court. In the event, Hermann died five years later and Elisabeth now became the fiancee of the second-born son, Ludwig, seven years her senior. She was 14 when she married Ludwig, 15 when she gave birth to her son, two years later she had her first daughter, a further year later her second and by the time the third daughter came she was a widow. The princess’s religious fervour alienated her from practically everybody around her, except her husband. She would take every chance to help the poor. During the famine of 1225 she had the large granaries opened up and was freely distributing bread to the starving. In Wartburg she had a hospital set up for plague sufferers and personally took part in looking after them. Never loath to do physical work, she was ever ready to fast and submit herself to bodily trials and self-imposed deprivation. A marriage of love, her alliance with Ludwig was tragically short-lived. In 1227 he set off for a crusade but fell ill and died on the way. Without Ludwig’s protection the despairing widow had no chance of staying in her former position. In 1228 she and her children left the castle of Wartburg and moved to Marburg. The person with the most definitive influence on her through the remaining years of her life was Franciscan monk Conrad of Marburg, the first German inquisitor, who acted, on proposal by the pope himself, as Elisabeth’s confessor and to whom she had made a wow of obedience while her husband was still alive. She used her widow’s fortune to have a hospital established in Marburg and served there as a nurse herself, wearing the grey uniform of the Franciscan Third Order. She relinquished the upbringing of her children to the relatives who thought her mad. She kept her fortune but only in order to distribute it among the poor – even though she might as well have chosen power, plenty and the luxurious life of the court. Emperor Friedrich II proposed to her but she declined. In 1231 she, too, became ill and died on November 17th. She was buried in Marburg and canonised a mere four years after her death, in 1235. Her feastday is on November 19th in Hungary and November 17th in the universal church.

St.Giles Cathedral, Bardejov
The contemporary revival of Bardejov is due to the fact that time seems to have stopped here – the general migration of people in the 20th-21st century, the enlivening of tourism after the post-communist transition and the new Slovakia which recognised the local potential. Bardejov was re-born in the frames of a comprehensive urban reconstruction project. Its beautifully restored historical centre, the inner city surrounded by mediaeval city walls and bastions and the centre with the main square where St. Giles’s Church and the Gothic Town Hall stand have been a part of the World Heritage since 2000. St. Giles’s Church stands in the Northern end of the square – a Gothic church with three naves and an East-West orientation. Its history overarches four major periods. The first monastery church was built by the original Cistercian monks at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. It probably survived the Tatar invasion or was rebuilt after that onslaught abated, because the already mentioned royal charter actually refers to St. Giles’ Church by name. The second period of construction was during the reign of the Anjou monarchs. A royal charter from 1320 which gives a tax holiday to German settlers reveals that ‘Civitas Bardpha’ has a priest and a parish – this cannot be referring to anything other than St. Giles’ Church. A document issued by Lajos the Great in 1352 also mentions the church by name. This document is a licence to hold an annual fair, which is to take place after the feast day (September 1st) of St. Giles, patron saint of the church and the city.

St.Martin Cathedral, Spišská Kapitula
Should you be driving from the direction of Prešov, as soon as you come out of the tunnel and take a turn for what is called ‘the Gothic tour’ leading to Levoča, you will be faced with an amazing view. The first thing you note is a sublime ruinous castle crowning a barren hill. It might appear at first sight as if the white walls were a natural continuation of the chalk tuff protruding from the grassy hillside. Somewhat further away one catches sight of two towers of the church of Spišská Kapitula (Szepeshely) peeping out from behind a closed ring of castle walls. Only then do you notice Spišské Podhradie (Szepesváralja), if at all. In fact you might well become distracted by a third amazing sight – the lonely and gorgeous chestnut ally along the road comes over particularly spectacular against the dreary landscape in which it is set. The ‘city’ is the seat of the bishop and chapter of Spiš in Slovakia, on St. Martin’s Hill which rises to the West of Spišský Hrad -the Slovakian Vatican, as it is called today. Spišský Hrad and Spišská Kapitula lie in the heart of historical Spiš (Szepesség) province and, within that, of Spiš County – a spot of strategic importance. The people of this castle and small city, founded by Hungarians in the 11th-12th centuries, acted as defendors of the region – indeed, of the entire kingdom. The castle has been the seat of the Count of Spiš, of castellanes, stewards and sheriffs – what you will. Their mission was to protect the Northern borders of the country at the head of the 'Gömör guard' and later the Spiš lancers who were made to settle here. Spišská Kapitula, with its canons, headed by the provost, served in the Middle Ages as the chancellors' seat for the count of Spiš. Close ties between the two places are shown, besides their geographic proximity, by the fact that Spišská Kapitula was built on a small hill named after St. Martin the border protector, and the provost's church, founded by Hungarians, which later advanced to become a bishop's cathedral, were also named after this border protecting saint. This is true to the way in which the churches of the surrounding border protecting villages feature wall paintings of the legendary of that other great border protector, King St. László.

Azda i preto Dominik Tatarka nazval Jána Červeňa básnik
om sujetu. Pozoruhodné je autorovo výtvarné a hudobné cítenie. Knihu ocenia čitatelia so zmyslom pre krásu a tajomstvá bytia.

Pojedači Boha
Brat Šavol, momentálne jeden z najpredávanejších slovenských autorov duchovnej literatúry, prichádza s novým titulom pojedači Boha. Ján Krstiteľ stanovil diagnózu. Ježiš uzdravuje. O to stojí človek. Ţe hreší, mu už povedali. Toľkokrát. A toľkí. Cestu k sebe samému, cestu k Bohu, cestu k nádeji a pokoja.
