Francois Truffaut

Icon of the nouvelle vague. This title looks at Truffaut's rejection of traditional cinema. From "The 400 Blows to Jules and Jim" to "The Last Metro", Francois Truffaut (1932-1984) practically defined the French cinema of his era and was one of the founders of the New Wave which took the industry by storm in the late 1950s. His endlessly touching and romantic films - always tinged by a touch of reflective sadness - made him one of France's favorite and most successful directors. This book traces Truffaut's career and includes rare images drawn from his archives.

Edward Weston

Few photographers have created such a legacy as Edward Weston (1886-1958). After a decade of successfully making photographs with painterly soft-focus techniques, Weston became the key pioneer of the school of precise and sharp presentation, dubbed "Straight Photography." This title deals with the life and art of Edward Weston.

Pinxit

Fuzzy bunnies, big - eyed girls, meat, magic, and mystery. Mark Ryden's carnival of curiosities. Blending themes of pop culture with techniques reminiscent of the old masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His work first garnered attention in the 1990s when he ushered in a new genre of painting, "Pop Surrealism," dragging a host of followers in his wake. He has trumped the initial surrealist strategies by choosing subject matter loaded with cultural connotation. Ryden's vocabulary ranges from cryptic to cute, treading a fine line between nostalgic cliche and disturbing archetype. Seduced by his infinitely detailed and meticulously glazed surfaces, the viewer is confronted with the juxtaposition of the childhood innocence and the mysterious recesses of the soul. A subtle disquiet inhabits his paintings; the work is achingly beautiful as it hints at darker psychic stuff beneath the surface of cultural kitsch. In Ryden's world cherubic girls rub elbows with strange and mysterious figures. Ornately carved frames lend the paintings a baroque exuberance that adds gravity to their enigmatic themes. Complex in its arcane and idiosyncratic subject matter, Ryden's work can leave no viewer unmoved. "Pinxit", whose title refers to the Latin term meaning "painted by," is organized by the themes of Ryden's major exhibitions - The Meat Show, Bunnies & Bees, The Tree Show, and so on - and includes collected essays by Yoshitomo Nara, Carlo McCormick, and others, and a new essay by culture critic Kristine McKenna. This sweeping retrospective brings together nearly two decade's worth of Mark Ryden's paintings and works on paper, broadening the horizons of his uncanny universe and bringing it to the world, one page at a time.

The Little Book of Pussy

From the time The Big Penis Book was published, readers anticipated The Big Book of Pussy. Granted, perhaps not the same readers, but the seed had been planted and the calls and letters began flowing in. Once they had that long-awaited book, some found themselves overwhelmed by the variety and abundance, as well as the sheer size of the book. As one reviewer wrote, "let’s give credit to Amazon for…the strength of its packaging. Who wants a 2-ton pussy book being ’exposed’ for the mailman…?" For those who worry that there can be too much of a good thing, we’ve made a pared down, "best of" edition of The Big Book of Pussy, a petite little kitten of a book that puts those in-your-face photos in proper perspective. Now you can follow the evolution of genital exposure with ease, through 100 years of photos with one thing in common: the exhibitionistic pleasure with which the models present their feminine pulchritude. And with over 150 photos - 36 new to this book - of the pet we love to pet, no bothersome text to interrupt the flow, all in a package that won’t stress the mailman’s back, we just may have produced the perfect self-gifter of the year.

The Little Book of Butts

How can we pack so much big booty into such a tiny and inexpensive package? Sorry, but it’s a trade secret we can’t divulge, except to say that shoehorns and spandex were involved. The original Big Butt Book featured a great cross-section of delectable rears from the 1950s to the present day. Here, in the Little Book of Butts, since life is such an ironic deal, we decided to pare the original content down to just the biggest and the best, in-your-face phatties to which the great Sir Mix-a-lot alluded when penning, "My anaconda don’t want none, unless you’ve got buns, hun." Then we added in about 30 new photos, just to be generous. Now in these 150 plus photos you’ll see the big and the bountiful, then the bigger and more bountiful, in black and white and in color. The models may be largely anonymous, but their curves are legendary, and now that they’re collected in a discrete little package affordable by all in these financially trying times, why hold back? Your badonkadonk is calling.

The Little Book of Legs

Many loved The Big Book of Legs but some found it just too darn big, weighing in at nearly seven pounds. True, it was packed with shapely legs spanning six decades, from the first shy emergence of the ankle in the 1910s, through the rolled stockings and rouged knees of the 1920s, to the Betty Grable ’40s, the stockinged and stilettoed ’50s, on into the sexually liberated ’60s and ’70s, but it could still put a dent in your own thighs if you sat reading for too long. Fortunately here at TASCHEN we listen to your groans of agony as well as your moans of ecstasy; thus, the light and portable Little Book of Legs, packing over 100 of the choicest photos from the original volume, as well as 38 new photos, into a compact (and frankly adorable) package. From Betty Grable to Bettie Page, the greatest legs of the 20th Century can be found within, shot by Irving Klaw, Peter Gowland, Bunny Yeager, and the incomparable Elmer Batters, father of leg art. There are silk and nylon stockings, high heels in abundance, curvy calves, taut thighs, playful toes and towering arches—with no bothersome text to get in the way. Could leg love get any sweeter?

Dian Hanson's History of Pin-up Magazines Vol. 1-3

Open your notebooks, sharpen your pencils, and get ready for a history lesson like none you’ve ever experienced. You’re about to learn everything you could ever want to know about the world history of men’s magazines—not magazines about sports, not fashion, not hunting or fishing or how to build a birdhouse in ten easy steps, but those titillating periodicals embracing the subject dearest to all heterosexual men’s hearts and other body parts: the undraped female form. Editor Dian Hanson traces the fascinating development of the genre from 1900 to 1969 in three compact, informative volumes. In Volume 1 you’ll learn about the first magazines that appeared around 1900 in France, Germany, and the U.S., and follow the development of the genre through the First and Second World Wars. Covered are men’s magazines masquerading as movie magazines, humor magazines, art magazines, nudist magazines, and “spicy” fiction. Volume 2 documents the proliferation of pin-up magazines following World War II, most notably a little item called Playboy that debuted in December 1953 and spawned dozens of imitators. This volume also charts the emergence of English men’s magazines, fetish magazines, and the top five covergirls of the 1950s. Volume 3 begins with an explosion of new American pin-up magazines following the loosening of U.S. obscenity laws, and continues with French titles in decline, England going pervy; nudists going hippy, and Germany going pervy, hippy and political.

Genesis Salgado

Human (and) nature. Epic journeys to the ends of the earth: Salgado's opus on our planet in its natural state. On a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastiao Salgado held a camera for the first time. When he looked through the viewfinder, he had an epiphany: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward - though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer - the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who "always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images," shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely. Having been raised on a rural farm in Brazil, far from civilization and without television, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. Of the myriad works Salgado has produced in his esteemed career, three long-term projects stand out: "Workers" (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world, "Migrations" (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure, and this new opus, "Genesis", the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society - the land and life of a still-pristine planet. "Some 46 per cent of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis," Salgado reminds us. "We must preserve what exists." The Genesis project, along with Salgado's Instituto Terra, are dedicated to showing the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage done to it, and preserving it for the future. Over 32 trips - traveled by foot, light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even balloons, through extreme heat and cold and in sometimes dangerous conditions - Salgado created a collection of images showing us nature, animals, and indigenous peoples in such shocking and intense beauty as to take one's breath away. Mastering the monochrome with an extreme deftness to rival the virtuoso Ansel Adams, Salgado brings black and white photography to a new dimension; the tonal variations in his works, the contrasts of light and dark, recall the works of Old Masters such as Rembrandt and Georges de la Tour. On the earth is instilled a glistening, textured fabric so intricate in its weave that even the most finite details seem to extend to infinity. What does one discover in "Genesis"? The ancient animal species and volcanoes of the Galapagos; penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of the Antarctic and South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo'e tribe deep in the Amazon jungle; the Stone Age Kurowai people of West Papua; nimadic Dinka cattle farmers in Sudan; Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; Mentawai jungle communities on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of the Antarctic; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; Saharan deserts; the Negro and Jurua rivers in the Amazon; the ravines of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska...and beyond. Having gone, quite literally in some cases, where no man has gone before, and having spent so much time, energy, and passion dedicated to the making of this work, Salgado likens "Genesis" to "my love letter to the planet."

Decorative Arts 50s

This is the authentic experience of a decade's design trends and styles. Published annually from 1906 until 1980, "Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook" was dedicated to the latest currents in architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, glassware, textiles, metalware, and ceramics. Since the publications went out of print, the now hard-to-find yearbooks have become highly prized by collectors and dealers. TASCHEN's "Decorative Art 50s" explores the spirit of optimism and the fervent consumerism of the decade. Technology and construction had been enervated by research during the war and these discoveries could now be applied in peacetime. The popularization of plastics, fiberglass, and latex literally shaped the decade. Rising incomes and postwar rebuilding on bother sides of the Atlantic led to a massive housing boom in both the suburbs and inner cities, and these new homes reflected the new style. While European design was extraordinarily inventive, American design was looking to an idealized vision of the future - between them a modern idiom was developed that can be seen vividly on these pages. This overview of the decade includes the work of such famous innovators as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Hans Wegner, and Gio Ponti.

Salvador Dali Paintings

Picasso called Dalí "an outboard motor that’s always running." Dalí thought himself a genius with a right to indulge in whatever lunacy popped into his head. Painter, sculptor, writer, and filmmaker, Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of the century’s greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics—and was rewarded with fierce controversy wherever he went. He was one of the first to apply the insights of Sigmund Freudand psychoanalysis to the art of painting, approaching the subconscious with extraordinary sensitivity and imagination. This publication presents the entire painted oeuvre of Salvador Dalí. After many years of research, Robert Descharnes and Gilles Néret finally located all the paintings of this highly prolific artist. Many of the works had been inaccessible for years—in fact so many that almost half the illustrations in this book had rarely been seen.

Logobook

Signs of our times. This is a monumental logo compilation. The 2009 Academy Award-winning "Animated Short Logorama", heavily based on the use of logos and brands, became the ultimate reference for corporate culture. Conceived by Ludovic Houplain from H5 design studio in Paris, the film tells the story of our times through the products and services that sorround us on a daily basis. The trio who directed it, Francois Alaux, Herve de Crecy, and Ludovic Houplain, conducted an extensive research for over one year, collecting over 40,000 symbols and trademarks that represent our world today. Their monumental archive is the basis of TASCHEN's ultimate reference guide, featuring approximately 7,000 logos organized alphabetically, with information about the designers, year of creation, country, brand, and company. Moreover, the book includes an extensive critical essay on brand culture by French philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky. "Logorama" is a must-have for any designer, student, marketing professionals, and anyone interested in contemporary culture.

Grand Tour

Travelling the world with an architect's eye Architect Harry Seidler spent more than 50 years traveling the globe, extensively photographing the peak achievements in architecture from 3000 B.C. to the present day. Thanks to sound advice given to him early on by his photographer brother Marcell (“Only use Leica cameras and Kodachrome film, which is archival”), Seidler’s hobby quickly developed into a passion and, finally, an impressive archive of world architecture. Including, of course, many of the world’s most famous architectural structures, Seidler’s photographs illustrate the history and style—country by country—of architecture in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Divided into chapters by country, each with a brief introduction outlining its architectural history, The Grand Tour offers armchair travelers, students, architecture buffs, and historians the opportunity to browse the buildings of the world through one man’s photographs—the fruits of a passionate, half-century endeavor. Shot by Kern

The internet video site VBS, launched by the ironic and ultra-cool American magazineVice, features original content on a wide range of subjects dear to the hipster heart. One of the first, and still the most popular, ongoing series was "Shot by Kern," a concept dreamed up by then editor-in-chief Jesse Pearson to roust photographer Richard Kern from his New York environs and have him shoot women Kern-style around the world. In the last seven years Kern has traveled to Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States with a Vice video crew. Fans follow his adventures on Vice.com, from interviewing the real women who dream of being New York Girls, through styling and shooting. What they don’t see, what no one has ever seen, are the photos that result from these video sessions. Shot By Kern presents some 300 of these photographs for the first time. Those who’ve followed Kern’s adventures on VBS will be especially eager to lay their hands on this book, but all fans will enjoy these fresh-scrubbed amateurs in their first time before the camera. Some are shy, some are brazen, but all have that quirky cuteness Kern seeks in his subjects. The book includes several photo series. As Richard travels the world he’s noticed cultural similarities between his models and themes have emerged, from the universality of prescription drugs, to a love of technology, to lying in bed, and peering up skirts. And because Kern has always been fascinated by what women do behind the bathroom door, there is lots of intimate personal grooming. As with Kern’s last TASCHEN book, Action, Shot By Kern comes with an hour long video, shot and edited by Kern, with original music by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, because, like Kern’s models, the modern world is always in motion.
