Degas

Capturing fleeting moments. This title deals with Degas' mastery in the depiction of movement. In terms of both theme and technique, the key to understanding the early work of Edgar Degas (1834-1917) is classical painting. Although he was eventually associated with the Impressionists and even participated in their joint exhibitions, Degas never adopted a purely Impressionist approach. Degas' work, reflecting an extremely personal and psychological perspective, emphasizes the scenic or concentrates on the detail. Thus, Degas' painting is often discussed with reference to the rise of short-exposure photography. Thematically, nature proved less interesting to the artist than the life and inhabitants of the modern metropolis. Degas primarily sought his motifs at the race track or circus, in bedrooms, or in ballet salons - and dancers always remained his favorite theme. About the series: Every book in TASCHEN's "Basic Art Series" features: a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist; approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions; and a concise biography.

Gauguin

A Frenchman in Tahiti. This book deals with Gauguin's search for pristine originality and unadulterated nature. After starting a career as a bank broker, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) turned to painting only at age twenty-five. After initial successes within the Impressionist circle, he broke with Vincent van Gogh and subsequently - when private difficulties caused him to become restless - embarked on a peripatetic life, wandering first through Europe and finally, in the search for pristine originality and unadulterated nature, to Tahiti. The paintings created from this time to his death in 1903 brought him posthumous fame. In pictures devoid of any attempt at romantically disguising the life style of the primitive island peoples, Gauguin was able to convey the magical effect that both the landscapes and life of the natives - their body language, charm and beauty - had on him. Wearying of his reputation as a South Sea painter, Gauguin finally determined to return to France, but died of syphilis on the Marquis Islands before his departure. About the series: Every book in TASCHEN's "Basic Art Series" features: a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist; approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions; and a concise biography.

Beatles On the Road 1964-1966

The Fab Five. Behind Beatlemania. In early 1964, Harry Benson was getting on a plane for a foreign assignment in Africa, when he got a call from the photo editor of London newspaper "The Daily Express". He was now going with The Beatles to Paris to document French Beatlemania and what followed was the biggest (ticket to) ride of his life. Benson was warmly welcomed into The Beatles' inner sanctum, resulting in some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of the band, then on the cusp of world domination. In Paris, he took the famous photograph of the Fab Four having a pillow fight at the George V Hotel; he shot their groundbreaking first visit to the United States, the full impact of New York hysteria, their famous appearance on "The Ed Sullivan" show, the band in Florida, including their surprising encounter with Cassius Clay; as well as on the set of "A Hard Day's Night". The relationship continued in 1966, including George's honeymoon in Barbados and their notorious US tour, under the shadow cast by Lennon's comment that the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus Christ." Benson's luminous black and white photographs show at close quarters The Beatles composing, performing, encountering their fans, relaxing, and engaging with each other, while trying to cope with their increasingly isolating fame. In addition to hundreds of photographs, many previously unseen, there is an introductory essay by Benson as well as quotes and newspaper clippings from the period.

Willy Ronis

Les petits miracles de la vie. This title deals with one of the great chroniclers of Parisian life in the 20th century. Produced in close cooperation with Willy Ronis and featuring images from his archives, this book traces the career of one of France's most remarkable photographers, to whom, along with Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson, and Brassai, we owe our romantic vision of France. In Ronis' photos of Paris, the city is inseparable from the working class men, women, and children who inhabit its streets and cafes. He once described his approach to photography in five words: "patience, thinking, chance, form, and time." Working with available light, Ronis sought to capture the fleeting moments of everyday life, and his body of work documents, with timeless beauty and grace, the feel of French life in the 20th century.

Taxi Driver

You talkin' to me? This title features previously unseen photographs from Scorsese's masterpiece. "Taxi Driver" has long been regarded as a cinematic milestone, and Robert DeNiro's portrait of a trigger-happy psychopath with a mohawk is widely believed to be one of the greatest performances ever filmed. "Time" magazine includes the film in its list of 100 Greatest Movies, saying: "The power of Scorsese's filmmaking grows ever more punishing with the passage of time." Steve Schapiro - whose photographs were featured in TASCHEN's "Godfather Family Album" - was the special photographer on the set of "Taxi Driver", capturing the film's most intense and violent moments from behind the scenes. This book - more than a film still book but a pure photo book on its own - features hundreds of unseen images selected from Schapiro's archives, painting a chilling portrait of a deranged gunman in the angry climate of the post-Vietnam era.

Architect's Home

Autobiographical homes. This title deals with the houses architects design for themselves. The greatest challenge in designing homes is negotiating the delicate balance between aesthetics and the personal desires of the occupants. While it's important for the structure to reflect the vision and style of the architect, the client must ultimately feel at home beneath the roof. It is particularly interesting, therefore, to examine the homes that architects create for themselves. If houses reflect their owners' personalities, then architects' own homes are like autobiographies. Location, layout, style, lighting, artwork, furnishings - every detail adds color to the story. Each of these dwellings, presented A-Z by architect, speaks more about its designer than any other building possibly could.

Camera Work

This title includes highlights from the legendary photo journal. Photographer, writer, publisher, and curator Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was a visionary, far ahead of his time. Around the turn of the 20th century he founded the Photo-Secession, a progressive movement concerned with advancing the creative possibilities of photography, and by 1903 began publishing "Camera Work", an avant-garde magazine devoted to voicing the ideas, both in images and words, of the Photo-Secession. "Camera Work" was the first photo journal whose focus was visual, rather than technical, and its illustrations were of the highest quality hand-pulled photogravure printed on Japanese tissue. This book brings together a broad selection from the journal's 50 issues.

Federico Fellini

Ringmaster of dreams. This is the complete works of one of the most influential filmmakers. Forever a circus ringleader at heart, Federico Fellini (1920-1993) is remembered as one of cinema's greatest storytellers. From bittersweet, heart wrenching tales ("La Strada" and "Nights of Cabiria") to semi-autobiographical classics ("La Dolce Vita" and the much-imitated "81/2") to ambitious period-pieces ("Satyricon" and "Casanova") to dreamlike pseudo-documentaries ("The Clowns", "Roma", and "Intervista"), Fellini brought his inner world to the silver screen in a profoundly original and innovative way. Among his many gifts to the world of cinema are the roles he created for his wife, the unforgettable Giulietta Masina.
