Richard Kern - New York Girls, 20th Anniversary

Escape To New York: Revisit those edgy, NY girls of the early 90s New York Girls, published by TASCHEN Books in 1995, defined a time, a place, and the raw esthetic of the artist Richard Kern. Kern was a leading figure in the 1980s Cinema of Transgression, director of the iconic filmsYou Killed Me First, FingeredandSubmit to Me Now; producer of Sonic Youth s Death Valley 69 and Marilyn Manson sLunchboxmusic videos; and a pioneering zine publisher responsible forThe Heroin Addictand The Valium Addict. After kicking his own heroin habit, Kern turned to still photography, shooting girls in his downtown, punk-inflected New York social circle. They werenaked, bold, tattooed, pierced, and casually posedin minimal sets, mostly just Richard s ratty slum apartment. They were young, but not innocent, fully complicit in the bondage, gunplay, and infamous candle insertions. The text was an interview with Kern by Kim Gordon. All of this predated SuicideGirls by six years and was utterly, supremely cool.To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kern s best-known work, TASCHEN is releasing an updated edition withnever-published outtakes from the original photo sets, as well as photos rejected as too explicit for the first book and stills from his 25 films. We know you ve missed Monica, Erin, Jaiko, Jen, Susan, Amy and Sam, and thought you d enjoy seeing just a bit more of them. Text in English, French, and German "

Pop Art

Soup cans and Whaam! The makers and shapers of Pop Art Peaking in the 1960s, Pop Art began as a revolt against mainstream approaches to art and culture and evolved into a wholesale interrogation of modern society, consumer culture, and the role of the artist and artwork.Pop artists primary provocation was to defy ideas of the artistic canon or originality by integratingmass market imageryinto their works. Whetheradvertising slogans, famed Hollywood faces, comic strip style characters, or the packaging of consumer products, the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein knowingly reproduced mundane, everyday images from popular culture. At the same time, Pop Art reduced the role of the individual and challenged the notion of originality by deploying mass production techniques such as screen printing. Like a hall of mirrors, the resulting works came to interrogate both the ideas and desires of contemporary culture, and its state of simulacra, whereby images, substitutes, and representations come to define the experience of reality .In this book, Tilman Osterwold explores the styles, sources, and stars of the Pop Art phenomenon. From Lichtenstein s comic book aesthetics to Warhol s images of Marilyn, it explores how a movement that interrogated the icons of its time came to produce icons of its own. "

Cubism

Fractured forms: Deconstructing perspective with Picasso and peers Pioneered by Picasso and Braque, Cubism has been described asthe first avant-garde art movement of the 20th century. With inspiration from African and Native American art and sculpture, its practitioners deconstructed European conventions of viewpoint, form, perspective to createflattened, fragmented, and revolutionary images.Picasso s celebrated paintingLes Demoiselles d Avignonis typically regarded as the original cubist work, with its radical fracturing of objects and figures into distinct areas, corresponding tomultiple different viewpoints. Cubism thereafter developed two distinct trends: Analytical Cubism, which continued to interweave perspectival planes in muted blacks, greys and ochre, and laterSynthetic Cubism, characterised by simpler shapes, brighter colors, and collage elements such as newspaper. This book presents the prime protagonists of Cubism, with work from artists includingPablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, Juan Gris, Albert Gleizes, andRobert Delaunay. About the series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions a detailed illustrated introduction plus a timeline of the most important political, cultural, and social events that took place during that period a selection of the most important works of the epoch, each presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and accompanying interpretation, as well as a portrait and brief biography of the artist "

David Chipperfield

"Architecture has to explain itself. It has got to be very clear, what you might call simple." Born in 1953, David Chipperfield worked for both Norman Foster and Richard Rogers before establishing a reputation for himself in Japan in the early 80s, and setting up David Chipperfield Architects in 1984. The practice, which now operates out of London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai has gone on to win over 50 national and international competitions. Suspicious of "starchitecture". Chipperfield adheres instead to a meticulously crafted minimalism in which volumes and light come together in masterful harmony. Less concerned with an immediately recognizable, individual style, he rather aspires to an architecture founded on collaboration, ideas, and excellence. His buildings are intended as physically immediate spaces in which "a sort of ordinariness" becomes special, and the individual structure co-exists with broader concepts of city building. Chipperfleld's vision has driven major projects around the globe, from the Des Moines Public Library in Iowa, USA to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield, UK and the famed reconstruction of the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany. Recent work includes the Museo Jumex in Mexico City and the expansion of the Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis, USA. This monograph features twenty four of Chipperfield's most significant projects, with a thorough introduction, detailed descriptions, and an extensive interview covering his major influences, and guiding principles on structure, space, and urban experience.

Ed Fox - Vol. 2 DVD Ed.

Our first Ed Fox title, Glamour From the Ground Up, introduced the heir to the peculiar photographic niche long ruled by the great Elmer Batters. California native Fox had not even heard of Batters when he first started photographing women with an emphasis on their feet. In fact, he thought he was the only young man who checked out a woman's feet before her face and most of the time couldn't meet his models" eyes for fear they'd discern his secret. Then he became the official foot photographer for Leg Show magazine, just months before Batters' death, and learned of the big shoes he had to fill at the same time he realized there were thousands of men just like himself - except without the talent to capture their passion on film, or as today, in pixels. Since then, Ed Fox has become internationally known for a sensual photographic style that captures every curve of a woman's body, right down to the tips of her toes. In Ed Fox II he brings us voluptuous new models, arresting locations - many blending the desert landscapes of Southern California with Fox's passion for automobiles - and fantasies mild to extra spicy, all shot in warm, caressing natural light. And, like Glamour From the Ground Up, Ed Fox II comes with a 60-minute original DVD, bringing the still photos to vibrant life. This edition's special Panic Cover is reversible to a realistic-looking academic book to keep the real contents hidden from your annoying boss or even help you impress an attractive onlooker!

100 Contemporary Wood Buildings

Timberland: The wooden structures of the 21st century Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen afabulous resurgence in contemporary construction. This double-volume survey explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuringfollies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood from architects in China, Chile, and everywhere in between. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in theMetropol Parasol in Sevilleby Jurgen Mayer H, and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, as at theFinnish Forest Research Instituteby SARC Architects, or the Termas Geometricas Hot Springs Complexby German del Sol.True to all TASCHEN architecture tomes, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents, as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each of these architect s vision and innovation, as well as investigating thetechniques, trends, and principlesthat have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood s enduring appeal to our senses and our psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of Arcadian beauty and simplicity. Andre de Dienes. Marilyn Monroe

One day in 1945, fashion photographer Andre de Dienes met an aspiring model named Norma Jeane Dougherty. It was a momentous moment, both for his personal life and his photographic portfolio. Over the next few years, he would be briefly engaged to Norma Jeane, take a number of adventurous road trips with her, and build up a stunning series of portraits which would help launch her modelling, and later movie, career. Now available as part of TASCHEN's Bibliotheca Universalis series, this collection of de Dienes' photographs and private memoirs offers an intimate picture of Norma Jeane the woman, before she was Marilyn the icon. From their trip to see Norma Jeane's mother in a mental hospital to Marilyn's visit a few days before her death, de Dienes' emotion-laden archive, often annotated with handwritten notes, offers a deeply personal account of Monroe's transformation from a sensitive, ambitious girl into a deeply troubled global star.

End of the Game 50yrs

Plain talking: An unforgettable portrait of Africa's wildlife crisis The deeper the white man went into Africa, the faster the life flowed out of it, off the plains and out of the bush...vanishing in acres of trophies and hides and carcasses. A landmark publication on Africa, The End of the Game combines Peter Beard s salient text and remarkable photographs to document the overpopulation and starvation of tens of thousands of elephants, rhinos, and hippos in Kenya s Tsavo lowlands and Uganda parklands in the 1960s and 70s. Researched and compiled over two decades, Beard offers a powerful and poignant testimony to the damage done by human intervention in Africa. His own images and texts are supplemented by historical photographs of, and writings from, the enterprisers, explorers, missionaries and big-game hunters whose quest for adventure and progress were to change the face of a continent: Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Courteney Selous, Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Philip Percival, J.A. Hunter, Ernest Hemingway and J.H. Patterson. In this fiftieth anniversary edition, TASHEN republishes The End of the Game in rich duotone and with an updated foreword by internationally renowned travel and fiction writer Paul Theroux. Touching on such themes as distance from nature, density and stress, and loss of common sense, this seminal portrait is a resonant today, amid growing environmental crises, as it was a half century ago."
