Cellarius Atlas va

History's most beautiful celestial atlas This collection of celestial maps by Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographerAndreas Cellarius (c. 1596 – 1665) brings back to life a masterpiece from the Golden Age of celestial cartography. First published in 1660 in the Harmonia Macrocosmica, the complete 29 double-folio maps and dozens of unusual details reproduced here depict the world systems of Claudius Ptolemy, Nicolaus Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe, the motions of the sun, the moon, and the planets, and the delineation of the constellations in various views. Cellarius's atlas, superbly embellished with richly decorated borders depicting cherubs, astronomers, and astronomical instruments, features some of the most spectacular illustration in the history of astronomy. This reprint includes a copiously illustrated introduction by Robert van Gent, one of the leading Cellarius experts, summarizing the history of celestial cartography from antiquity to late 17th/early 18th century and illuminating the life and work of Andreas Cellarius. Van Gent also discusses the historical and cultural context and significance of the atlas and provides detailed descriptions of the astronomical and iconographical content of the plates, allowing modern readers to fully appreciate the masterwork of Andreas Cellarius and his publisher, Johannes Janssonius. The book's detailed appendix includes a list of constellation figures with short descriptions of their origin and mythology, a list of star names found on the plates, a glossary of technical words, and a bibliography. Cellarius's exquisite renditions of the constellations will excite the astronomer in anyone.

God save her indeed! Photographers included: Cecil Beaton, Studio Lisa, Dorothy Wilding, Karsh, Lord Snowdon, Patrick Lichfield, as well as more contemporary work from the likes of Wolfgang Tillmans, Rankin, Annie Leibovitz, and many others.

The Mastaba

History in the making. A new wonder of the world. "The Mastaba" will not only be Christo and Jeanne-Claude's greatest achievement and only permanent large-scale work, but also the biggest sculpture in the world and one of the most significant creations in history. Conceived in 1977, "The Mastaba" takes its name from an ancient word describing a trapezoidal structure with a flat top, two vertical walls and two outward sloping sides. Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "Mastaba" will be made from 410,000 multi-colored barrels to form a mosaic of bright sparkling colors that echoes Islamic architecture. The sculpture will be 150 meters (492 feet) high, 225 meters (738 feet) deep at the 60 degree slanted walls and 300 meters (984 feet) wide at the vertical walls. The individual colors and the positioning of the 55-gallon steel barrels were chosen by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1979, the year in which the artists first visited Abu Dhabi. They have since returned many times, creating a longstanding friendship with the Emirate and its people. In 2012, the ideal location for "The Mastaba" was identified approximately 160 kilometers south of Abu Dhabi in the stunning desert of Al Gharbia, surrounded by some of the most spectacular dunes in the world.

Tillmans, Neue Welt

Over the period of more than two decades, Wolfgang Tillmans has explored the medium of photo-imaging with greater range than any other artist of his generation. From snapshots of his friends to abstract images made in a darkroom without a camera or works made with a photocopier, he has pushed the photographic process to its outer limits in myriad ways. For this collection of photos, his fourth book with TASCHEN, Tillmans turned away from the self-reflexive exploration of the photography medium that had occupied him for several years by focusing his lens on the outside world-from London and Nottingham to Tierra del Fuego, Tasmania, Saudi Arabia, and Papua New Guinea. He describes this new phase simply as "trying out what the camera can do for me, what I can do for it." The result is a powerful and singular view of life today in diverse parts of the world, seen from many angles. Says Tillmans, "My travels are aimless as such, not looking for predetermined results, but hoping to find subject matter that in some way or other speaks about the time I'm in." The book features a fascinating conversation between the artist and Beatrix Ruf, director of Kunsthalle Zurich.

Man Ray T25

This book deals with the creator of Surrealist Photography. Man Ray (1890-1976) is indisputably one of the most original artists of the 20th century. His revolutionary nude studies, fashion work, and portraits opened a new chapter in the history of photography. Born under the name of Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, he began his artistic career in New York. In 1921 he moved to Paris, where he was enthusiastically welcomed into Dadaist and Surrealist circles. Man Ray experimented tirelessly with new photographic techniques, multiple exposure, rayography, and solarization being some of his most famous. Erotic, playful, and sometimes sinister, his compositions show unusual bodies and objects: strange, striking images that transform our perceptions of reality. This collection of famous, lesser known, and unknown works fully illustrates Man Ray's singular visionary power.

Edward S. Curtis

In search of lost time. For over thirty years, photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) traveled the length and breadth of North America, seeking to record in words and images the traditional life of its vanishing indigenous inhabitants. Like a man possessed, he strove to realize his life's work, which culminated in the publication of his encyclopedia "The North American Indian". In the end, this monumental work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2000 illustrations. No other photographer has created a larger oeuvre on this theme, and it is Curtis, more than any other, who has crucially molded our conception of Native Americans. This book shows the photographer's most impressive pictures and vividly details his journey through life, which led him not only into the prairies but also into the film studios of Hollywood.

Elmer Batters Toes to Hose

The grand master of beauty below the knee. Elmer Batters (1919-1997) was the grand master of leg and foot art. While others preferred the thrill of an inviting cleavage, the maestro's eye was on lower things - trim calves, the arch of a foot, the well-made lines of toes and heels. He chose his models with these criteria in mind - and with the obsessiveness of a Zen artist spent his lifetime looking for the perfect leg. Batters started out publishing his photos himself, but from the late 60s onwards the field was his, and he was the star house photographer of magazines such as "Leg-O-Rama", "Nylon Doubletake" and "Black Silk Stockings", to name but a few. This book pays homage to Batters' great obsession with legs, feet, and toes.

New Erotic Photography vol 2

International sex appeal. This is a fresh collection of today's most titillating nudes from around the world. Following on the heels of our highly popular "The New Erotic Photography 1", this second installment features entirely new photographs by 50 of the world's most intriguing talents. Of the included photographers, 35 are new to this edition; these new photographers, including Eric Bonzi, Cyril Torrent, Jo Schwab, Yossi Loloi, Tomohide Ikeya, Frederic Fontenoy, Andrew Pashis, Jan Hronsky, and Chase Lisbon are drawn from Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Japan, France, Russia, the Czech Republic, and the U.S., respectively, making this a solidly international title. There are also several outstanding women introduced in this edition, including erotic film star Kimberly Kane, Colombian expat Alejandra Guerrero, skate-boarder and heavy metal rocker Magdalena Wosinska, self-portraitist Erica Simone, and our own favorite cougar, Liz Earls. The photos in "The New Erotic Photography 2" document the changing photographic media as much as the evolution of erotic photography since the previous book was published. Over half the photographers now use digital exclusively, and those who do use film are likely to use Polaroid, or primitive Eastern European cameras like the Lomo and Holga, experimenting with film for its special effects rather than using it as an every day medium. The 400 + photos, regardless of how created, are fresh and provocative, but never fully explicit, making this book acceptable to a wide audience of art lovers and fans of nude photography.
