Back to the country. This is the option of the "new rural", a way of life that has come to stay, paradoxically possible thanks to technology, the Internet and remote working. We are living at a time when the city is becoming congested and does not satisfy us at all, due to costs, square meters, and various sacrifices that result in a poorer quality of life. In the urban world, going to the countryside has always been an ideal escape to the good life, and today it is more possible than ever. The New Rural shows the interior design of some thirty houses in various rural environments - new houses, converted spaces or rehabilitations which ensure maximum comfort for their inhabitants without giving up the comforts of modern life while making the most of the close link with nature.

This is a collage of still life, pornography and cityscapes. Nobuyoshi Araki is one of Japan's best-known artists, and his photograph feature in exhibitions in all the leading museums of the world. For more than thirty years he has been working on a project that is close to his heart: a portrait of the Tokyo that lies beyond all moral values and taboos. His artistic strategy is simple yet extremely effective. In his books, of which over 100 have been published in Japan, he juxtaposes snapshots with nude photos, and still life with hardcore pornography. The photos for "Tokyo Lucky Hole" were taken between 1983-85 in Sinjuku, Tokyo's famous red light district, which was closed by judicial decree in 1985. In over 800 photos, Araki documents life in this "forbidden city": from the customer whose every desire is satisfied, to prostitutes after a hard working day, from slaves in their dominatrix' cage to the show girl in the peep-show.

It started in 1978 with an ordinary coffee shop near Kyoto. Word spread that the waitresses wore no panties under their miniskirts. Similar establishments popped up across the country. Men waited in line outside to pay three times the usual coffee price just to be served by a panty-free young woman. Within a few years, a new craze took hold: the no-panties "massage" parlor. Increasingly bizarre services followed, from fondling clients through holes in coffins to commuter-train fetishists. One particularly popular destination was a Tokyo club called "Lucky Hole" where clients stood on one side of a plywood partition, a hostess on the other. In between them was a hole big enough for a certain part of the male anatomy. Taking the Lucky Hole as his title, Nobuyoshi Araki captures Japan's sex industry in full flower, documenting in more than 800 photos the pleasure-seekers and providers of Tokyo's Shinjuku neighborhood before the February 1985 New Amusement Business Control and Improvement Act put a stop to many of the country's sex locales. Through mirrored walls, bed sheets, the bondage and the orgies, this is the last word on an age of bacchanalia, infused with moments of humor, precise poetry, and questioning interjections.

A figurehead for the return of painting after his overnight success with a first New York solo show in 1979, he has since worked in a wide variety of media: making sculptures that transpose his pictorial forms into space as raw, seemingly time-worn artifacts; directing award-winning movies that paint portraits of artists and other subtly heroic figures; and even building his own dream of a Venetian palace in New York. “I want my life to be in my work, crushed into my painting like a pressed car. If it’s not, my work is just some stuff,” Schnabel has said, and this urgency permeates his oeuvre no matter what means or media the artist chooses.
